The Nielsen Co. is putting Editor & Publisher to pasture after 125 years of covering the newspaper business. It’s a shot in the gut to journalists everywhere, many of whom got their start from the mag’s want ads. But the trade’s shoes have already been filled by commendable online publications, such as Romenesko and local efforts like LA Observed. It seems Nielsen couldn’t interest anyone in buying the publication, having unloaded its more profitable rags (Adweek, Brandweek, Mediaweek, Backstage, Billboard, Film Journal International and The Hollywood Reporter) to an investment group. Dear E&P staffers, I will miss the pub; grew up in journalism with it ever since j-school. But there are alternatives: in fact more literally Alternative publications to keep the rest honest. Like Roldo Bartimole’s old AP out of Cleveland, for example. Or restart the Freedom of Information Center at the U. of Mo. minus its lobby offices in DC—but emphasis should probably be less on “freedom of” than “quality of” what gets into print on on the Web.
