Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude accused the top U.K. anti-terror official of “alarmism.”

Budget worries are sparking a new debate in Britain, with spending cuts taking aim at police services in what some see as a threat to the country’s anti-terror efforts.

The country’s most senior anti-terror agent called the cutbacks “eye-watering” and said they will increase the risk of attack. —JCL

The BBC:

Britain’s most senior anti-terror officer John Yates has sparked a political row after he warned spending cuts would increase the risk of attack.

Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude reacted angrily to Assistant Commissioner Yates’s comments, accusing him of “shroud-waving” and “alarmism”.

Well, Britain rather takes the metaphorical morphobia medal. It would appear from the cited article that the Brits are shroud-waving in public to an eye-watering degree.  Some are even charged with shaking up Whitehall. They were apparently seized upon by the shadow Home Secretary who seems to feel that if anti-terrorism costs are not ring-fenced, Britain will go soft as a damp marshmallow.
It is to be assumed that all agencies will be ring-fenced until October when the axe will fall.
  What’s not to love?

Who cares? The whole thing is smoke and mirrors anyway and the average Briton is under more threat from the CCTV cameras that cover Britain like a fungal blight than from any terrorist. They’re more likely to be struck by lightning than die or be injured in a terrorist attack as anyone who has seen ‘7/7 Ripple Effect’ knows.
