Michele Bachmann’s husband tries to “cure” gay people; President Obama wants to make cuts to Social Security and Medicare; meanwhile, the archivist of the U.S. defends Wikipedia from professors. These discoveries and more, below.

On a regular basis, Truthdig brings you the news items and odds and ends that found their way to Larry Gross, director of the USC Annenberg School for Communication. A specialist in media and culture, art and communication, visual communication and media portrayals of minorities, Gross helped found the field of gay and lesbian studies.

The links below open in a new window. Newer ones are on top.

What Kind of “Doctor” is Marcus Bachmann?
The truth about Michele Bachmann’s husband’s Christian counseling service has been exposed: It tries to “cure” gay people with harmful, quack-science “ex-gay” therapy.

Obama pushing for cuts to Social Security, Medicare
For months, the standard narrative among progressive commentators was that Republicans were outrageously exploiting the debt ceiling deadline to impose drastic entitlement cuts on a resisting and victimized Democratic President (he’s weak in negotiations!), but the driving force behind these cuts is the President himself, who is pushing for even larger spending cuts than the GOP was ready to accept.

Wikipedia Aims Higher
The United States’ foremost custodian of public records had advice for professors whose colleagues still turn up their noses at Wikipedia.

Scouring the Globe for Sex Advice
Sociologist Judith Stacey spent over a decade searching for worldly wisdom on alternatives to monogamy.

That is a good collection of stories. I enjoyed reading about the “doctor” Marcys Bachmann. Someone who claims he can heal a person’s homosexuality should be rightfully scrutinized because such claims are largely untrue. I wonder if it is because of his strong Christian background that causes him to have such a negative view about homosexuality.

Perhaps Bachmann should apply to himself for treatment.

There exists a substantial body of research
about the personal psychological causes &
social functions of homophobia, all of which
supports 2 major themes: 1) males that regard
themselves as heterosexual but who are
sexually aroused in any degree when shown
images of naked men during penile
plethysmography are significantly more likely to
be homophobic; & 2) males who are most
concerned with how other people might gauge
their level of ‘manliness’ tend significantly to be
overt homophobes. For instance, in an
American town with one or more active Nazi
groups, the young potential recruits most likely
to join are short & skinny. This does not mean
that some are not of other body types.

EXCERPT: The results of this study indicate that
individuals who score in the homophobic range
and admit negative affect toward homosexuality
demonstrate significant sexual arousal to male
homosexual erotic stimuli. These individuals
were selected on the basis of their report of
having only heterosexual arousal and
experiences.

nb: The following study was undertaken to test
Freudian theory. However, no such purpose was
or is necessary to the understanding of the
results.
