Alejandro Poire, Mexican National Security Council spokesman, announces the death of alleged drug cartel leader Antonio Ezequiel Cárdenas Guillén.

An hours-long gun battle in the Mexican border town of Matamoros left at least eight people dead, including the leader of a major drug gang and a newspaper reporter.

The battle among two drug cartels, police and the Mexican navy closed down the city for the better part of Friday, including all three bridges that connect Matamoros to Brownsville, Texas.

The journalist who was killed was Carlos Alberto Guajardo. Sources with knowledge of his death claim he was killed by soldiers who were chasing the drug traffickers.

For a local view of the story, check out the Brownsville Herald’s coverage of the gunfight. —JCL

The New York Times:

The Mexican authorities said Friday that a leader of the Gulf drug gang had been killed in Matamoros during a day marked by street fighting between soldiers and gunmen that paralyzed the city, which is across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Tex.

The gang leader, Antonio Ezequiel Cárdenas Guillén, who American and Mexican officials say took control of the cartel after his brother Osiel Cárdenas Guillén was arrested in 2003, was killed by Mexican marines, according to a statement by Alejandro Poiré, the security spokesman for the government.

Three other gang members were also killed, the statement said, and the Mexican Navy reported that two marines and a soldier died during the six-hour gun battle.

frecklefever,

We share the same view.

BTW, moonraver is an expert on hateful, incoherent drivel, most likely busted in a bean field and sent back to the pueblo.

Don’t worry your pea brain about it, I’ve commented here long before you got here and will continue long after you leave.

How quickly decency and intelligence degrade into personal attack!  A symptom of the obvious—disintegration of political discussion and the sickening of the American soul.

Moonraver,

Undocumented workers as soldiers? what a laugh.

It is true though that many resident aliens with greencards serve in the nations military.  It takes some years off the “wait” for naturalization.

Turtle Island was long ago, the new tenants are here.

Talking out your butt as always.

Your butt is no finer than your brain pan, plasticpatriot.

Most ignorant, bigoted commentary I have read in internet in months—and you, an illegal immigrant on Turtle Island—and therefore a criminal—have had some strong competition from other boobs and racist rubes.

There are thousands of US soldiers who are NOT citizens—undocumented workers make up a big portion of that.

Duh.

Don’t bother to respond with your random words tossed at the wall as if they were spaghetti.

Moonraver,

They are my troops when they visit the Mexican border to supress some of the violence there comming over it.

I favor invading many of these border areas where lawlessness takes the form of killings and pot shots at our border patrolmen.  If the Mexican government doesn’t have the resolve to act decisively then it is time again for the U.S. to do so.

We are fighting the wrong war in the wrong place for the wrong reasons.  Mexico is full of criminals, lets start there instead.

Don’t forget that American troops are also American citizens before and after military service.  Alot have served in the reserves after active duty and continue to do so.

Thank you for concern about my butt, its fine.

Neither of which is the case.

Moonraver,

As long as I am a taxpayer in this country they are MY Troops.

When troops (latin, black and white) follow orders and commit atrocracies, we as American citizens are tarnished abroad for them following the orders of others.

Maybe you should eat some of your own racist la raza vomit.

Why are you posting ignorant hatespeech?

The gringos invaded Mexico 3 times since 1847—when Polk decided to make his legacy ripping off more than half of Mexico’s territory (and Mexico’s people didn’t receive one dime for it).

The gringos executed the military coup against democratically-elected Francisco Madero in February of 1913—then a year later used the excuse that the boozing general they installed as dictator to attempt another invasion from the port of Veracruz.

And then they sent Black Jack Pershing to chase Pancho Villa throughout the state of Chihuahua after Villa’s men shot up the town of Columbus, NM, in 1916.

Take your racist vomit and eat it.

Mexico is in a Civil War. Political control is held at gunpoint and the corruption is spread evenly throughout both the political and gang factions. It is experiencing the end result of the same social disintegration now in play inside the U.S. Failed education, destroyed economic base and Government subsumed by corrution.

Drug money is huge and both Mexican and American political/private sectors profit directly. Marijuana remains illegal for that reason. Also, it is important to remember that the enterprise is International and straddles all borders. Too, “drugs” are only one aspect of the market. Illegal labor, human trafficking for the sex trade, forged documents, arms, money laundering, auto theft, kidnapping for profit and other “underground” activities feed both the American and Mexican political elite. Recent revelations that American and International Banks openly launder illegal cash without prosecution (small fines) says it all. The recent flood of Heroin into American Streets and High Schools echos U.S. condoned C.I.A./Ollie North style “spook” involvement in the S.E. Asian Golden Tri-Angle and Central American drugs in American streets for arms trade. Afghanistan (Karzai’s brother) is a major Heroin producer. 2+2 always =‘s 4.

The social disintegration of Mexico and the resultant violence is moving North. Phoenix Arizona U.S.A. remains second only to Mexico City in “for profit” kidnappings. Arizona’s attempts to protect itself have been blocked by the Fed. and California’s Social Services bankrupted by the “illegals labor trade” set to benefit corporate exploiters and reverse outsource low end American jobs.

Open corruption in Washington and the recent news that “foriegn” cash can now buy American elections is a clear signal that the merger between the shadowland private merc arm of the American M.I.C., political corporate fascism and International Black Market Criminal Finance is complete. American social/financial disintegration will continue and as Federal corruption spreads, weakened States will find themselves, as in Mexico, internally compromised and engaged in open warfare for control of the streets.

Though avaricious greed places blinders on the political hogs in D.C., the fact that Che/Fidel style Communist/Socialist ideology is flooding North, and has created an open anti-U.S./separatist underground within’ the U.S., remains. It has its own language, culture, arms and International financial support. It uses old political wounds to justify its actions, and the “racecard” to silence dissent. It’s organized and funded. Ironically, it may offer the American people their only ally when total collapse strikes sometime the end of this Century.

      Mexico is prologue.

“...and was responsible for shipping large cargos of marijuana and cocaine to the United States, the State Department has said.”

When will the State Department say “enough already!” and take steps to deflate the terrible costs of this trade, legalize and regulate it?
Even better, treat causes of addiction and of selling harmful substances?  Of course that would mean laying a finger or two on Big Pharma, wouldn’t it? And on a patently unjust economic system.
It would also mean disillusioning people who think that those killed in the drug trade and those victimized by it “deserve” their sad end because they are “morally, socially, or racially inferior” and as long as they are not in my backyard I can turn a blind eye.
