Adult services, once the haven of prostitution-related classified ads, has been turned into a black “censored” box.

Craigslist, the online classifieds site responsible for everything from selling couches to hiring clowns for birthday parties, has quietly changed its “adult services” section—which has been the focus of controversy due to the heavy presence of prostitution services—to an eerie, blacked-out “censored.” —JCL

CNN:

Embattled online classified service Craigslist apparently made a change to its website early Saturday, censoring its adult services section.

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Although I understand that craigslist has to charge for some services in order to make most services free, they have showed a truly repugnant arrogance and cynicism with respect to their adult services section (which is their second largest moneymaker after real estate ads).  It is way past time that they shut this section down, given the number of incidents that have occurred as a result of its presence.
