Climate Crisis Threatens BillionsPosted on Apr 6, 2007
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that the climate crisis could afflict billions of people, especially the poor, with food and water shortages, drought and flooding. “For the first time, we are no longer arm-waving with models; this is empirical data,” explained one of the panel’s leading scientists.

2.5 years after this article was written and its getting worse. Oxfam have launched a £9.5million appeal for the victims of the Kenya drought. Millions of people in East Asia are at risk from the effects of drought and hunger.

Professor James Lovelock, author of Gaia, said last year that we have already passed the ‘tipping point’ of global warming and that nothing can be done by the population of the world to stop a future of runaway global warming. I have included a link to some of his comments.
http://www.pacificviews.org/weblog/archives/001750.html
I read his book, Gaia, and must admit that it is a fascinating and elegant theory of how the earth is a giant feedback loop that is generally self sustaining unless it is interfered with. He believes that humans have interefered with the earth to the point where we will face runaway warming very soon. He proposes many emergency reccomendations to governments to take various actions in the time that we have left.
I am not a planetary scientist and dont have a clue about whether he is right or wrong. However, I tend to err on the side of practacality and am stocking up on J&B just in case he is right.

Another crisis, fortunately we have the perfect administration in place to deal with it. Oh, sorry they just create crisis, they don’t actually fix anything.
Report thisIn a world where governments serve the whims of their corporate masters we all better hope the word “could” in this piece isn’t replaced with “will”. The world leadership isn’t in place to deal with anything other than opening the next Walmart.

Eso . . . so eloquently written. We, “the magician’s apprentices” . . . How will we supress our egos when we have been living lives of luxury compared to most people in other countries. It is no surprise that the poor will continue to suffer disproportionately even through the coming global changes. The dichotomy between the rich and the poor only grows wider.
A complete change in values and priorities is necessary, at a time when the U.S. has been striving for excesses in everything from high technology to fast-foods for humans as well as animals, ergo (the poisoned pre-packaged pet food disaster).
Agribusiness is not our FRIEND. Big Business in general, does NOT have the individual’s interest in mind. The main interest of Multi-Nationals and Mega-Corporations is PROFIT. Money makes the World go ‘Round. American Society as well as other highly Industrialized Nations are becoming more and more self-absorbed and superficial. It is called GREED. It is called Self-Indulgence.
Yet we have examples of selfless societies within our own society, such as the Amish, the Hutterites, the contemplatives. There are people who are leading stoical lives within a “Society of Excessiveness”.
Driving SUV’s is extravagant. Traveling by Air for week-end trips to the Carribean is excessive. Shipping items “Made in China” to thousands of Walmarts across America is opulent.
Report thisUsing 80% of the World’s Natural Resources but comprising only 1/8th of the World’s Population is excessive. Have we reached the “point of no return” or can we become Noble Beings and distribute the gifts of Our Planet Earth equitably?

I trust technology is going to take care of this. I certainly do not think we should have to give up our SUVs, our 5,000 sq ft vacation homes, our personal jets, and our imported food. Please, you must put people and their needs first and please stop the scare mongering.

Say goodbye to Santa Monica, Manhattan, Florida, San Francisco..to name just a few…
They’ll all be under water soon, in our life times.
The real estate losses will be just staggering, I suppose Detroit could switch to makeing motor boats instead of cars…
life will go on of course, but civilization will end…
the same self indulgent ignorance that prevented us from doing something about the problem before it was too late, will also prevent our cooperation with others before it was too late…

Dear God, when will people realize that global warming is not a problem? Everyone who has seriously studied the data knows that global warming is a) a natural process unrelated to human intervention and b) not accurately reported. Even if ALL the countries in the world adhered to the Kyoto protocol, the earth’s temperature would only drop .07%. That’s not even measurable! Furthermore, every dooms-day prediction has been based on models which, if looked at today, are obviously wrong! Models and data on global warming have continuously shown that predicted climate change due to global warming is significantly less than originally predicted. There is no threat and, even if there was, there’s nothing we can do to stop global warming.
Ultimately, all this hysteria boils down to funding. Billions of dollars have been funneled into global warming research because of all the horror stories climatologists invented and, now, they’d better have something to back up their claims. Simple self-interest and unenlightened polemic. That’s all the global warming hype boils down to.

The bell tolls not only for the end of irresponsible behavior, but announces the arrival of self-sacrifice not just for country (an idea that increasingly rings of political irresponsibility), but for such forms of life as squids, elefants, whales, butterflies, etc. The ethcists and ‘believers’ have been telling us that self-sacrifice is suicide, but I believe this to be an idea that is crippling life saving action and is at the bottom of the chaos unleashed by the magician’s apprentices that we are. I will not be surprised to live to see the day when one of our many human selves will surmount his-her ego and sacrifice his-her life to stop the carnage against life perpetrated by our ‘wonderful’ egoes run amuck.

So the globe is warming. Where’s the evidence that it’s due to human activity? Where’s the evidence that anything humans do can stem the tide, so to speak?

All concerned governments will never pay attention to this alarming phenomenon. They only want to please themselves with big bucks from all avenues and forget billion and billion people’s agonizing with all kinds of disasters. Is that bell told for the end of human’s life ?
