Television Nacional de Chile via The BBC

The first scenes from an 8.8 earthquake in Chile, near Concepcion, were shown on Chilean national television.

An earthquake in central Chile has killed more than 140, authorities say, and triggered both a tsunami and a declaration of a “state of catastrophe.” Chilean President Michelle Bachelet warned that there would probably be more deaths and more aftershocks.

The Guardian:

A massive earthquake has hit central Chile, killing at least 147 people, the country’s president-elect says.

The 8.8 magnitude quake struck at 0634 GMT about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago.

President Michelle Bachelet declared a “state of catastrophe” in affected areas and appealed for calm.

hello. that’s too far for us to invade! hic. my prayers to those survivors and deceased in Chile. anywho, i am noticing tremendous activity in the Pacific region; most notably Alaska. it alarms me to think that Alaska may get their own 8.0 soon, and California may fall off the shelf, in the next two years. move east: Californians; move east.
