Gabino Zavala served the L.A. faithful for decades before resigning at 60.

It certainly is difficult to uphold a vow of celibacy when confronted by the contradictory evidence embodied in two teenage children, and this is the reason why a Los Angeles-area bishop, Gabino Zavala, recently resigned from his vaunted position within the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI has accepted Zavala’s resignation, according to the Vatican.  —KA

BBC:

The Archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez, wrote in a letter to worshippers that Bishop Zavala told him in December that he was the father of two teenage children.

The children, who are minors, live with their mother in another state.

[...] Bishop Zavala is 60 and was born in Mexico. He has campaigned against the death penalty and for immigrants’ rights.

Well,if Bishop Zavala only molested little boys instead of having a consensual heterosexual relationship,he’d probably still have his job.

Sadly the Latino community and Latin America are the only areas where the dinosaur Catholic Church still finds hope in being taken seriously in a 14th century style. When I do research in California’s Central Valley, which has a en enormous specifically migrant community, it’s fascinating to see how families spiral into conflict because a family member becomes a Protestant or dates a Protestant, or stops believing in religion itself.

Well, Papal Bully for Zavala!  It will be a great relief for him not to have to live a double life
any longer.  And, released from Catholic shadows,  his wife and children will rejoice. This is the best I’ve see yet of starting the New Year right!  We should all be so honest and forthcoming!
