Arcadio Esquivel, La Prensa, Panama

The ailing Venezuelan president will run for re-election in 2012, according to a top government official, and intends to hold on to most of his political powers while undergoing cancer treatment in Cuba. Chavez has expanded the portfolios of his vice president and finance minister.

The socialist leader has not disclosed the type of cancer, but revealed he had a tumor removed and is taking chemotherapy.

In a tweet Monday, Chavez wrote “Buenos días Mundo Feliz! Buenos días Venezuela Bella!! Desde aquí, listo para otro dia de BatallaPorLaVida.Viviremos y Venceremos! LosAmo!!” Or, according to the BBC’s translation: “Good morning Happy World! Good morning beautiful Venezuela! From here, ready for another day of the battle for life. We will live and win! Love you.”  —PZS

BBC:

In an interview on state television on Monday, [Finance Minister Jorge] Giordani gave reassurances about Mr Chavez’s ability to remain in power.

“I think there is no doubt the president will be present at the 2012 elections and then for many years,” he said.

@Jeff, actually, according to the official UN figures, Venezuela has the most egalitarian society in South America and the population most hopeful about it’s future. Venezuela now ranks as one of the countries with the highest number of university graduates, and in South America it has the population with the greatest access to healthcare. Interesting how you fascists can never give an example of how the people who ruled before Hugo did a better job (everyone should read on the Caracazo riots of 1989).

Way to go @Robespierre115.  Your support for a dictator
who has left his country in such bad shape that he had
to go to Cuba for medical treatment is brilliant!

Hugo Chavez is South America’s latest “President-for-Life”, aka Dictator, as he moves day by day to consolidate his power.

Chavez will NEVER voluntarily leave office.  He’ll die there or there will be a coup.  He’ll cook the election so he cannot lose.

As Stalin said, it doesn’t matter who gets the most votes, only who counts them.

Juan Peron was popular, too. BFD.

Whatever else, Hugo Chavez Frias will go down in history for having given the Empire the finger.
With all the Marines busy in Central Asia he got away with it.
Best wishes for a speedy and total recovery.  More peoples should show the USA the door.

I love you Hugo.

I love you a whole lot (so much that I find it difficult to properly express).

My best wishes for you, and your beautiful country, and for us all!!!
