Campaigns Pause for 9/11, Zadroga Act Update, and More

Pausing for 9/11: Today might be the only day before the November election without actual campaign politics to report on, as both President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney take the day off to observe the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This includes suspending the partisan attack ads for the day. (Read more)

Not Pausing for 9/11: While Obama and Romney may be taking the day off from partisan campaign events because of Sept. 11, the same can’t be said about all of politics. For example, Crossroads GPS, a super PAC started by Karl Rove, is running attack ads against Democratic Senate candidates in the critical swing states of Nevada, Ohio and Virginia. Top House Republicans, meanwhile, continued to level attacks against the president. (Read more) 

Obama Remembers 9/11: The president commemorated the 11th anniversary of 9/11 during a somber memorial ceremony at the Pentagon. “As painful as this day is and always will be, it leaves us with a lesson: that no single event can ever destroy who we are, no act of terrorism can ever change what we stand for,” Obama said of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. Romney Remembers 9/11: Mitt Romney paid tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, and the first responders and military members who were called to duty in the aftermath. “We remember with heavy hearts the tragic loss of life, and we express thankfulness for the men and women who responded to that tragedy. We honor them, and we honor those who secure our safety even to this day,” Romney said, addressing the U.S. National Guard in Nevada. (Read more)

Government to Recognize 9/11 Cancer Link: It’s about time! The federal government is finally ready to recognize the link between exposure to toxic dust caused by the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and incidents of cancer among rescue and recovery workers, and local residents. Recognition by the government would pave the way for the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act to finally kick in. (Read more)
