California Passes $86 Billion Budget Without New Taxes

California Gov. Jerry Brown.

Californians made it easier for their lawmakers to pass a budget, but you might not be able to tell from all the drama. Perhaps you heard that Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a budget passed by his own party, Republicans managed to block voters from approving new taxes and the state controller stopped paying legislators.

Still, a new budget passed with plenty of time—two days left in the fiscal year. Unfortunately, the Statehouse was forced to make even deeper cuts to programs like education and law enforcement, and lawmakers may have exaggerated future revenues just a little.

Brown, a Democrat, is expected to pursue tax increases through California’s notorious proposition process.  —PZS

Contra Costa Times via San Jose Mercury News:

Without a deal to go the ballot for an extension on sales, income and car taxes, Brown and Democrats decided to rely on the projected revenues. But they also increased the pain for many who had already suffered through budget cuts.

Democrats added more cuts to higher education: the University of California and California State University had already taken $500 million each in cuts, and were each dealt another $150 million in cuts.

The courts and justice department are to take hits of $100 million more, as well, drawing howls of outrage from all corners.

You must be one of those really smart people who voted
for Ralph Nader in Florida.

What was Brown supposed to do?
Start printing his own money or rule by fiat?

It’s amazing that the two most liberal governors in the nation, of two of the three biggest states, California and New York, are both getting things done despite the horrid situations and are both putting their states back on the road to economic health.

Meanwhile the Right-Wing-Nut governors of 2nd and 4th largest states, Texas and Floriduh, are ineffective, obnoxious jerks.  Rick Scott is now the LEAST popular governor in the nation after just 6 months, has alienated and pissed off 3/4 of the state and gotten nothing done.  Rick Perry is a traitor by his own words, advocating secession from the United States and has the temerity to consider running for President.  Walker in Wisconsin will see his Senate majority vanish when the recalls go through, and will probably be recalled himself.

And Chris Christie here in NJ has managed to take away union rights while refusing to raise taxes when our schools are in trouble and our roads and bridges are collapsing. Hell, he can’t even properly fill out a form to get federal grants, then lies about it. He can’t even get the snow cleared.

In 2 of the 4 largest states, the Democratic Govs are getting it done.  In the other two, the Re-thug Govs (and both ARE thugs) are dismal failures.

California is a banana republic. Delusional “liberals” voted for Jerry because the other option was a Tea Party whack job, the sad part is they literally believed he was going to be different from Republicans when it comes to the economy.
