Calif. State Sen. Ashburn: ‘I Am Gay’

California State Sen. Roy Ashburn is officially out of the closet. However, the Republican lawmaker from Bakersfield has some ’splainin’ to do, starting with his voting record, which has not exactly reflected a supportive stance toward LGBTQ causes. Then there’s the issue of his alleged drunk driving last week, which culminated in a late-night arrest that led him to out himself on a local radio show Monday.  —KA

San Francisco Chronicle’s Politics Blog:

“I am gay. And so, those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long,” Ashburn told radio host Inga Banks on her show on the KERN station in Bakersfield.

The announcement follows days of intense scrutiny of Ashburn’s personal life after he was arrested just after 2 a.m. on March 3. A Sacramento television station reported that Ashburn was at a popular gay dance club that night and several people have said they have seen the senator at gay bars in the city.

His sexual orientation is at issue because Ashburn has one of the staunchest records of voting against bills that would expand rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Californians.

Robert - Thanks for mentioning the tie. I took another look at the tie and shirt combination and sure as shot, he is faking. There is no way a gay man would even be dressed like that for his cremation. He’s not gay. NOPE. NO WAY.

if he thinks he’s saying it for the first time, he’s never worn that tie before.
gayness is the least of his confusions.

Better late than never! Still though, why would a gay person vote on policies against their own interests?  It’s even worse, I think, when a politician - the cornerstone of public service and the one who makes the most difference for a society good or bad - CREATES and votes against his own personal interests.  It’s pointless as it is living a lie.  Why do that?  I hope the paycheck was good.

I don’t sympathise, resonate, or feel this dufus. Dante and God created the ninth circle of hell for homos like him. Not for homos like me. No, I am going to heaven because I suffered through the same identity crises as he has, for my whole life, and felt the same disadvantages and had the same doubts. I was called faggot, looked at weirdly, mistrusted and discriminated against, not only unlike him, but also because of him and his ilk.

I found my way through it, honestly & without harming others. It wasn’t that hard to do, but then my family gave me some character to help me along the way.
