Owning up: In a speech Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron faces the past.

On Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron faced the daunting task of answering for one of the U.K.’s most volatile historical episodes: the so-called Bloody Sunday shootings in Northern Ireland in 1972. Cameron formally apologized for the loss of 14 lives during and after the incident and unequivocally stated that the British army was to blame for setting off the violence.  —KA

BBC:

Thirteen marchers were shot dead on 30 January 1972 in Londonderry when British paratroopers opened fire on crowds at a civil rights demonstration.

Fourteen others were wounded, one later died. The Saville Report is heavily critical of the Army and found that soldiers fired the first shot.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he was “deeply sorry”.

He said that the findings of the Saville Report were “shocking”.

How enlightening, now imagine Israel apologising from war crimes against the Palestinians and Hamas apoligising for suicide bombings.

Where would this madness end?

I agree that this seems to be a case of blaming some underlings,
while the higher-ups get off scot-free.

It’s rather analogous to what happened in the US after
the Abu Ghraib scandal—a few low-ranking “rogue” soldiers got jail time, and
there was no admission of the existence of a systemic policy of abuse, and no
punishment of the high officials who directed that policy.

It’s pretty remarkable that this apology comes under a Conservative
government.

I know, PSmith, that it’s just that the many-years-long inquiry happens to be
ending now, under Cameron’s watch. But the fact is that it did end now, under
a Conservative government; and this government has unambiguously
acknowledged that the police were completely to blame for the massacre.

You can say that the crimes and especially the coverup were even worse than
what the government is owning up to; but still, this is remarkable. It rouses my
Europe envy. In Europe, it seems, even your “conservatives” are more
progressive than our “liberals”.

De ja vu: 20-30 years later the kooks’ stories turn out to be right. I’m old enough to remember when people were claiming the CIA was dishing out LSD. Then there was the story about the CIA smuggling drugs into the USA. The murder of Lumumba, the attempts against Castro. All these were fantasies conjured up by hippies on a high;or so said the paper of record, better known as the imperialist’s mouthpiece. I’m not implying that all weird stories are true, just that they should be investigated properly. 30 years from now,the Flotilla-9 will be found to have been heroes. Israel will admit the same, apologies will be forthcoming, financial reparations made. The one thing you can be sure of: as long as our side is the guilty party, nobody involved will ever be punished. If it’s the other side, they will rot in jail or be hanged.
