Breast-Feeding Proposal Under Attack by Tea Party

The breast-feeding proposal was made under the auspices of the new “Let’s Move” health promotion campaign.

In an effort to combat skyrocketing obesity rates and increase the general health of children in the U.S., Michelle Obama launched a campaign to encourage breast-feeding among American mothers. Who has a problem with that? Tea party hostesses Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann.

The puzzling attack against Obama came after she expressed support for a tax break proposal for women who bought breast pumps. Last time we checked, the tea party didn’t like taxes so what gives? —JCL

The Guardian:

Michelle Obama’s campaign to encourage breastfeeding among American mothers has become the unlikely focus of an attack by two prominent rightwing politicians.

Tea Party favourites Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann have used Obama’s breastfeeding drive as a stick with which to beat her.

Bachmann began the onslaught by ridiculing the first lady’s support for this week’s decision to award tax breaks to mothers for the cost of breast pumps.

I have read studies about the health benefits of breastfeeding to combat child obesity. If mothers can breast feed until their child is at least 8 months old, their child will probably never have weight issues. Feeding a child cereals, formulas, & solid foods too soon just encourages fat cells to develop.

Everyone wants to get rid of obesity, but unfortunately, most people have to be “bribed” in some way to change a lifestyle. Getting a tax break if you buy a breast pump isn’t the answer.

Instead, there should be an “educational” media blitz campaign about breastfeeding and child obesity. This is to help future generations only. Otherwise society keeps getting fatter and fatter!

I milked a cow for four years by hand, if it was good enough for me why do women need a hand pump? Seems a bit pricey at 300 dollars. after 4 years of hand milking I finally bought a surge automatic milker for $250, though it was used.

Not sure but if these hand suction pumps cost 300 dollars and a Surge milker costs $250, I think the hand suction pump is over priced. Do they milk two breasts at one time? Though on cows we called them teats not breasts and the Surge Milker, milked all four teats at once!

You could probably purchase a used Surge Milker and separate it into four sections and sell each one for $50.00, but the compressor would cost extra.

Emily…

I wasn’t expecting a reply to my sarcastic post, but thank you anyway.  $300 is getting up there.  However, my point was that if you take the pump as a medical tax deduction, then in the 15% bracket you would save $45 and in the 25% bracket $75, which still makes the pump pretty expensive for people on limited incomes.  Better yet if a person qualifies as low income on the 1040 and breast feeding is so important, then permit the pump as a full tax credit than a deduction.

You aren’t supposed to buy a second hand pump, there is
a Small chance of contaminated milk backing up into the
suction mechanism and possibly passing on to the second
user, there for causing infection. There are no known
instances, but buying second hand pumps or using a
hospital grade pump that hasn’t been properly sanitized
is frowned upon. And a new, decent quality double
electric pump runs about $300 dollars, something women
should be able to claim on their flexible spending
accounts.

This is just plain crazy!  How much does a breast pump cost?  Can’t
you get an used one on ebay?  Anyone who needs a tax deduction to
afford a breast pump has to be in the lower tax bracket and at most
they will save only a small portion of the cost.  And if they don’t
pay any tax, then there is no savings!  Better to provide breast
pumps free to all.

Even the racist Republican women can’t contain their
hatred for the Obama family. Who could possibly be
against childhood obesity or breastfeeding. No
pedeitrician I know.  Do anyone think that if Barbara
or Laura Bush or Nancy Reagan took up the same cause
that Michelle Bachman or Sarah Palin would be against
it? They would blame food stamps and school lunch for
giving kids too mush to eat.I don.t know of any
Democratic women ever critizeing any Republican first
ladies while in office. But to Michelle Bachman and
her redneck hillbilly sidekick Sarah Palin Michelle
Obama isn’t the first lady anyway since the husband
isn’t a U S citizen.

Since I was breast fed until I went into the Marine Corps, after which I then reserved myself to sucking on me thumb even to this day, the reason why I only type using one hand.  Even so I am still fat, maybe mummy should have utilized a breast pump?

Not that conservatives give a crap about the Black community, but I’ve been reading that most Black women do not breastfeed their babies.  Apparently it’s part of the culture for some reason, and these women need to be educated about the benefits.  But hey, we all know that conservatives only care about forcing babies to be born and pay no attention after that.

Palin and her even scarier clone are going to attack Michelle no matter what she says or does, it’s a sad fact of life at this point.

Of bigger interest is the fact that Michelle continues to undermine all the hard work her husband is doing courting the corporations that cause all the problems she’s trying to fix. He’s meeting with Monsanto about GMO’s while she’s growing an organic garden. Do the two of them realize they are at ethical odds with each other?

In Palin’s simplistic hostile world - if an Obama believes it, it must be wrong. The blind application of this oppositional tactic leads of course to the ‘reductio ad absurdum’ of denying the importance of breast feeding which is a natural and healthy maternal practice. Only if Michelle O had suggested more junk food, would Palin have been on the sane side of the argument. Childhoold obesity is a national health crisis that Michele O is rightfully addressing. If the government is going to supply schools with eatables paid for with my taxes - it better be healthy! Enough sodas and Cheetos! If the parents can’t regulate their children’s eating habits, at least the school will be one place that does.

I believe women should be allowed to breast feed in public, so what do I know? Tax breaks for pumps, maybe Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann would be okay if the pumps were womens shoes?

Tea Baggers, what say you Ozark Michael? (OM is the only known Tea Baggers who seems able to read and write).

A war on obesity, let me say this, us fat people will not take this sitting down. I would rather see a war on stupidity, but then Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann would be opposed for personal reasons.

Breastfeeding is clearly a socialist activity.  Distributing a natural resource to a bunch of freeloaders with no charge? I don’t know much about socialism, (anything at all…if we’re being honest) but I do know that Stalin would approve.

Both of those teabagging fascists know that
corporations (ala Monsanto, Haliburton, Koch Ind. etc.)
poison the land, water and air which is absorbed by the
human body. They need strong white babies and so
advocate commercial formula and discourage
breastfeeding.

Expect every right-wing nut to now attack tax breaks for breast-feeding as “Socialism”.  Our own RWN trolls at TD will be on that band-wagon ASAP.

Imagine: In their desperate attempts to re-establish White Protestants as dominant in America they’ve now come out against….Mother’s Milk!

From what I can tell, the more sensible elements in the
Tea Party are not so much anti-tax as they are anti-
control.  They think that they should be free to live
their lives in peaceful ways without being subjected to
coercion from an oligarchic structure (such as the
government).  As such, while they would probably favor
lowering taxes across the board, they can still
logically oppose a system of tax breaks in exchange for acquiescing to government control.

I’m one of Michele Obama’s fans. But this is something to be decided by the mother. There is no connection between breast feeding and weight. What new mothers need is a few more people telling them what’s best for them and their babies. We should mind our own business, even Michele. Palin and Bachman are both nut jobs so they don’t even count.

It may well be that high obesity rates are more related to the consumption of GMO’s,
and HFCS, than a lack of nursing. Though nursing is much better for infants, than
formula filled with GMO soy.

I would propose Instead you ask that husband of yours to fire Tom Vilsack, for being in
bed with Monsanto. That would be much more productive.

This healthy proposal by Mrs. Obama is much more appreciated than her last proposal to encourage shopping at a particular Big Box store which vowed to keep prices low on nutritious foods__ this too an effort to fight childhood obesity.

Breast-feeding is the natural way to nourish an infant and benefits both the mother and child.  Instead of making breast pumps affordable to all mothers__ maybe Michele should be championing mandatory, as well as longer maternity leave for mothers.  If the U.S. were truly concerned about the health of its families then paternity leave would also be required or at least an option (in this case the fathers could benefit from the storage of breast milk pumped by the mothers).  Ah but such an advanced civilization is far too advanced to do what comes naturally . . .

The article mentioned that only 40% of Black mothers breast fed their babies for any length of time.  Unfortunately it was U.S. Corporations (Nestle was Swiss at the time ) that encouraged formula feeding to women in underdeveloped countries resulting in high infant mortality rates. Poor women did not have methods of hygene to wash bottles or to mix formula with clean water. Yet they were promised healthier babies.
Apparently those new “old wives’ tales” are still prevalent in African American neighborhoods.  It used to be instinctive for mother and infant to bond while breast feeding.  Somewhere along the way the “middlemen” interfered with the natural order of things.

How dare Mrs. Obama seek to educate Americans on childhood obesity!  How dare she claim that breastfeeding is a good thing!

The petty and infantile women of the teabagger group will reject ANYTHING put forth by the First Lady. It is, after all, a simple matter of jealousy.  These women can only dream of possessing a miniscule fraction of the intelligence, grace and maturity Mrs. Obama displays.
