BP Points to Thriving Tourism to Reduce Settlement Payments

The northern Gulf coast of Florida as seen in 2005.

Just over one year out from the BP oil spill that wreaked havoc up and down the Gulf Coast, the tourism industry there is so far having one of its best summers in years. BP is latching on to the good news, using it to argue in a court filing recently that “there is no basis to assume that claimants, with very limited exceptions, will incur a future loss related to the spill.”

But with so little time having passed, is it too soon to make such assumptions? Could the good fortune of the tourism industry this summer be a fluke, or more likely yet, an effect of the upward swing of the U.S. economy in general since 2009?

Furthermore, while BP is fighting for the right to pay Gulf-area claimants less for possible future losses, the issue of whether or not to remove underwater mats of oil, discovered even recently sitting just off shore, keeps residents worried for their future. In the event that a tropical storm or hurricane passes through the Gulf, those submerged mats of oil and tar could wind up sitting on the beach yet again. —BF

The New York Times:

Since the spill last year, messages from the coast have been somewhat mixed, with some businesses arguing that it is continuing to hurt the coast and that more assistance is needed, and others, often led by tourism officials, emphasizing the positive to entice visitors and consumers.

This is not necessarily contradictory, as the effects of the spill were infuriatingly uneven, and a business does not have to be empty to be hurting. But the summer of 2011, a strong one by a variety of measures, has made this balance harder to strike.

BP has long taken issue with the formula created by Kenneth R. Feinberg, who oversees the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, which is dispensing BP’s $20 billion compensation fund. Under the formula, settlements would generally be double the demonstrable losses from 2010, with money previously paid by the fund subtracted.

I trust neither BP nor Kenneth Feinberg. Now tell us: When are you going to tell the truth about the over 100 miollin gallons of oil that’s still underwater? What are you going to do when it resurfaces? Do you honestly think you’re going to escape this that easily?Stop making videos about how badass you are, because you aren’t. The least you could do is tell us the truth for once.

I think it is also benifetial to think about stnippg this disaster it is greate ,  and seek the help to stop it rather than only claiming for compensation . I beleave Amrica is doing very bad things by supporting Israil for every worse act Just like imposing siege on gaza strip not allowing even medicine to gaza people and not allowing to move freely , so I think oil spill is reminding from God ( Allah )  that America the strongest nation should support only Right causes and noble attitudes so that poor and all other nations will be pleased nd say good words about Amrica. Thankyou

Tourism is up?!?

Who are these people gorging on Gulf seafood and bathing in the tainted waters?

Are they subsidized vacationing employees of BP et al?

Are they America’s idiot class, willing to do more damage to their grey matter?

Are they merely conference-goers who stay well-away from toxic waters and food?  Or maybe the conference facilities foist this stuff on their guests.

Is tourism up because of cheap cheap rates—translating into loss of income and more work?

This of course is why a large part of the executives of BP should have been arrested and waiting trial for their crimes. Just because they made money is no reason to believe they didn’t commit a crime, several of them.

If it hadn’t been for the brazen attacks on good sense by the oil companies we might by now have a real alternate energy program.

If BP gets off the hook it will only reinforce the belief of many that the Obama administration was foisted upon us as a corporate Trojan Horse and is not one iota more in support of the American people than their theatrical adversaries on the other side of the sty! Amerika is a fascist state! Read any objective literature on political theory and philosophy and I defy anyone to deny that the fundamentals of fascism are not the driving force of our government today!
