Bloomberg Dug Deep Into His Own Pockets to Win Third Term

This is just the kind of news that doesn’t bode well for the state of democracy in America: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg shelled out $102 million of his own money in his recent successful (albeit close) run for re-election. That shakes out to about $183 per vote, and the final tally may still rise.  —KA

The New York Times’ “City Room”:

Mr. Bloomberg, the wealthiest man in New York City, shattered his own previous records: he poured $85 million into his campaign in 2005, and $74 million on his first bid for office in 2001.

And the $102 million tab is likely to rise: the mayor has not yet doled out his storied bonuses to campaign workers, which can top $100,000 a person. That spending will not be reported until after his inauguration.

He has now officially spent more of his own money in the pursuit of public office than any other individual in United States history.

Well said, Liecatcher! Well said!

Good to know the Depression isn’t affecting illegally running for political office! Whew. I was worried there for a sec…..

I recall the nationwide protest over Caroline Kennedy using her legacy and connections to claim a senatorial seat for which she wasn’t qualified. The hoopla changed her mind…and rightly so. As much as I like the Kennedy’s, I dislike aristocracy trumping democracy.

Bloomberg ought to be ashamed and embarassed to do this. I’d like him to explain how such outrageous spending fits with democratic ideals?  Should we just allow the rich to run this country…along with the banks, corporations, and other financiers whose wealth largely comes these days at the distress of people who have to work for a living. Why is the job so important to him?  To do good, he would probably say, but couldn’t he do just as much good as a philanthropist like Michael Gates?

If he didn’t have the money, would he have the job? What’s his opinion, and why don’t reporters ask him these questions?  As a public servant, he is required to answer.

Still, people voted for him.  Why?  We give up our power to these financiers by going along with them, by voting for them.  Campaign finance reform is desperately needed and then we might get true reform that protects the citizens of this country instead of laws that protect Wall Street.

I think it’s time for a revolution, people.

Ardee,

It is reported by HP(Front page top), not me, personally I do not give a rats ass about the Tiger’s or Bloomburg’s of the world, it could safely said the feeling would be mutual. Accuracy or truth to any thing one reads is open to question. Breaking news (Tigers head) TMZ whoever they are?

I believe we may be in for a few blond jokes coming around the bend, providing slack for the lipstick on a Moose lady!

The news report I heard stated that Mrs. Woods used an iron to free her husband from the car , not to commit mayhem against him.. Of course a cover up is a likely occurrence in these cases, but why rush to add fuel to an unnecessary and ultimately unimportant little domestic fire.

Why are you soft bigots (I won’t refer to you as
liberals/progressives anymore) pretend to be surprised
that Herr Ariel Sharon Bloomberg spent over $100M to
buy the reelection?!  As I wrote on previous posts
here, regardless of political party is in power as long
as you bigots can hoard the living wage jobs, rent
stabilized/controlled apartments and shop at Whole
Foods/Trader Joes, etc., life in Johanesburg 2009 will
not change.

Rich people and their many problems, so it seems, at least the rich folks we get to hear about, over and over again!

How come we are not hearing about Tiger Woods? Now it is reported his wife decided to play golf with his head!

Buying into a political position, seems a nice way to spend ones allowance, anything is better than the clown who was mayor during 911.

Are we going to read about Bloomburg trotting off to Argentina?  Does he spend time in airport rest rooms?
Just because the guy is rich, does not mean he has the morals of a Republican! Give BB a break!

Being Mayor is important to him!

BLOOMBERG DUG DEEP INTO HIS OWN POCKETS TO WIN THIRD
TERM Posted on Nov 27, 2009

Just the GOLDEN RULE: those who have the gold rule.

At this late stage of obamageddon, why pretend that

America is still a Democracy when it’s obvious that

this is a fascist fiefdom with the banksters in
control

Bloomberg would have never been mayor if he didn’t have piles of money to outspend everybody. He couldn’t win as a Democrat so he won on the tails of Guilani throught the fears of 9-11. He is no longer a Republican after Bush screwed it up for most Republicans to win especially in the Northeast. Now he uses his personal fortune to keep himself in power. It goes to show you that we are a country by the money and for the money not by and for the people

The qualities necessary for winning an office in govt. seem to be increasingly down to exactly how much money they can spend winning that office. Is this any way to run a nation?

Basically this is about dollar diplomacy for the rich and scary as hell in that a
greedy person such a bloomberg will ‘buy the office’ just to protect the 1%ers and compromise the rest of the people.
