Bill Moyers, left, interviews Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s former pastor, on PBS in 2008.
Public advocate and progressive journalist Bill Moyers delivered an emboldening speech at the commemoration of Public Citizen’s 40 years of consumer advocacy last month, declaring: “Our politicians are little more than money launderers in the trafficking of power and policy—fewer than six degrees of separation from the spirit and tactics of Tony Soprano.”
Before making that comment, Moyers clarified that GOP today means “Guardians of Privilege,” but he didn’t limit his criticism to conservatives. Barack Obama earned a place in his cross hairs for calling bankers “fat cats” while simultaneously inviting them for $200 dinners at some of New York City’s glitziest restaurants. Moyers suggested that this might have something to do with the dissatisfied crowd camped outside Wall Street in Zuccotti Park.

Bill Moyers via AlterNet:
Over these 40 years journalism for me has been a continuing course in adult education, and I came early on to consider the work you do as part of the curriculum—an open seminar on how government works—and for whom. Your muckraking investigations—into money and politics, corporate behavior, lobbying, regulatory oversight, public health and safety, openness in government, and consumer protection, among others—are models of accuracy and integrity. They drive home to journalists that while it is important to cover the news, it is more important to uncover the news. As one of my mentors said, “News is what people want to keep hidden; everything else is publicity.” And when a student asked the journalist and historian Richard Reeves for his definition of “real news”, he answered: “The news you and I need to keep our freedoms.” You keep reminding us how crucial that news is to democracy. And when the watchdogs of the press have fallen silent, your vigilant growls have told us something’s up.

yeah, Moyers shows moral outrage, reflecting what many feel, but he’s still a
limited hangout
Moyers doesn’t show the nerve to discuss the global finance oligarchy for whom
the venal plutocrats in Washington, London and Paris carry water
the global finance oligarchy is the real mafia and NATO is their hit team - any
regional capo who won’t knuckle under should expect the usual treatment,
demonization, violent insurrection, accusations of military brutality by the
regime, and a humanitarian intervention: i.e. massive bombing
OBOMBER perfectly fills the job description for head of state of NATO’s leading
power - his perfect minion is SHARKOZY and CAMERUIN - NATO has never
been lead by a more vicious troika - once AFRICOM is fully ensconced in Africa,
expect the same for all of Africa.
“Anything less than a drastic overhaul of this corrupt and amoral sham of a
government will yield nothing more than more of the same!”
Actually, the reference should be to the whole shebang. The answer is not to
be found on the same level as the problem. The answer is to do away with
interest-bearing money (the moneychangers shouldn’t really be running the
world; that’s humanity’s fatal mistake) - and the profit motive itself - and
replace the lot with a system whereby the citizens of their mother Earth share
goods and services with one another, and give of their best in doing so, out of a
higher motive than that of personal aggrandizement: out of gratitude to their
Creator for life with meaning.
This, of course, will require the citizenry to accept that we are ‘spiritual beings
having a human experience’ - that there is Plan in and Purpose to life, beyond
just in and for itself only. But since there is considerable evidence to that
effect, this shouldn’t be that difficult. So…wakeup time, citizens of planet
Earth? As we verge on a New Era for humanity?? Or more accurately: on THE
New Era???
Or do we really want either the socialistic New World Order of the left or the
fascistic NWO of the right??...Either of those is just the choice between Scylla or
Charybdis. In effect: No real choice at all.
The answer, then, is to go neither left nor right. But Up.
It can’t REALLY be that hard of a choice. Unless someone wants to continue to
live in ignorance, of what life is all about. Which certainly isn’t about storing
up treasures on the material level; where rust and moth doth corrupt.
it is nice to hear also moyers describing the system and how it works. it works as
‘fathers’ [mafia of that day] of the confederation expected and fervently wanted it to
work.
however, slavery did not last forever or as long as they expected and wanted.
and since ‘fathers’ did not outlaw slavery in their time or barred bringing in slaves
from africa, it caused the civil war and from late 19th c in its stead [or after the war]
a long, too long, an oppression of ‘free’ africans.
let me please posit just one more observation regarding the system in u.s: it is an
exact copy of the system that existed for at least four c.
abuse of money is its most important fixture. it buys not only liars/deceivers but
also killers.
now, leaving aside whether the system of rule [structured much like a mafioso org]
is under attack or not, the cause of today’s protest against it, is—as far as i can
make out—solely or largely the planet getting poorer by day and thus also [?most]
serfs, but not, of course a few thousand families in u.s or few mns worldwide.

@Berniem —Hey Bill, I luv ya but you’re not exactly telling us anything new here.—
No, it is not new. It is not even new since this autumn. But it is harder for the media to shut up somebody like Bill Moyers, than it is to dismiss the protesters of OWS.
For that alone it is worth repeating.
Well you left out the part when he talks about the exact moment 40 years ago when we
took a wrong turn…..then there was also the part about the chamber of
commerce…orchestrating the assault on the New Deal, with the purpose of dismantling
it….
They have succeeded, yes they have, but they have also identified themselves as the
mortal enemy of the American people..
Hey Bill, I luv ya but you’re not exactly telling us anything new here. They may call themselves the “best and brightest” but a whole lot of us have known them as “pond scum and dog droll” for a good long time. The system is wrecked. Capitalism has shown itself to be every bit as oppressive and reactionary as all of its predecessors. Democratic(small d) socialism is probably the best solution for the dismantling of the global corporate empire and must occur without the meddling of anyone currently in position of power and influence. Politics as a career must be eliminated from governance via term limits and public funding of elections. A civil service whose leadership will be determined thru internal selection rather than political patronage will administer laws and regulations made by elected officials based on communication with actual persons directly affected and not by lobbyists representing nothing more than financial interests. Political contributions outside of the public finance system will be dealt with as what it is, bribery. Of course such a change in our way of doing “business” will not happen overnite nor will it occur smoothly. Anything less than a drastic overhaul of this corrupt and amoral sham of a government will yield nothing more than more of the same!
Moyers tells the story forthrightly and intelligentlly. I admire him so much for the many times he has clearly articulated political and social problems.
