Arizona Congresswoman Shot (Update 3)

Posted on Jan 8, 2011
Photo from Rep. Giffords' Facebook page

A congresswoman is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, six people are dead and 12 others are wounded after a gunman opened fire at an official event Saturday.

Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head when a man opened fire at a Safeway store in Tucson. As of this posting six people, including a Giffords aide, are dead, 12 others, possibly including a federal judge, are injured and Giffords is in surgery, according to reports.

Giffords and her staff were holding a constituent meeting at the Safeway at the time of the shooting.

President Obama will hold a press conference later in the day. He released a statement saying “such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society.”

Update: The New York Times reported Sunday that U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona remains in critical condition, but doctors said she was able to respond to simple commands a day after she was wounded in the head in a shooting rampage in Tucson.

The New York Times

Representative Gabrielle Giffords, the Arizona Democrat who was gravely wounded in a shooting rampage, remained in critical condition on Sunday but has been able to respond to simple commands, and her doctors described themselves as “cautiously optimistic” about her recovery.

At a news conference at University Medical Center, the congresswoman’s doctors said that she was the only one of the victims of Saturday’s shooting to remain in critical care at the hospital. They said that she was lucky to be alive but would not speculate about the degree of her recovery, which they said could take months or longer.

“When you get shot in the head and a bullet goes through your brain, your chances of living are very small,” said Dr. Peter Rhee, the chief of trauma surgery at University Medical Center, where Ms. Giffords was brought by helicopter from the shooting scene outside a supermarket north of Tucson. “Your chances of waking up and being able to follow commands are even smaller than that,” Dr. Rhee said.

Watch Fox Noise and listen to right-wing hate radio. You will get a first-hand education on how much hate and violence is encouraged by a growing radical right-wing group.

You can even watch other nutjob leaders like Michelle Bachmann, John Boehner, King, and Palin. From time to time they also encourage violence.

We don’t know the full story yet about the Tucson nut but the climate of polarization and rancor has been nurtured by Republicans, especially since Newt. It is their way of demonizing their opponents and continues to work for their election or re-election.

It will stop when voters wise up….if ever.

Here’s how I view these violent acts:

1) Americans have an incredibly high tolerance for carnage. Anyone who believes otherwise is not paying much attention to the wars, the news, books, music, movies, tv, video games and many of our national “pass times.”
2) Americans have unconsciously done the cost/benefit analysis on the 2nd Amendment. They want it, the SCOTUS is behind it….it’s not going to be altered any time soon.
3) As long as we have the 2nd Amendment Americans have, by default, accepted a certain level of carnage. It’s the price we pay for this “freedom.”
4) The more the anti-gun groups complain, the more money and power the NRA acquires. Every time the Brady people open their mouths, the coffers of the NRA fill to overflowing.

What’s equally disturbing is how gun advocates use these shootings and the subsequent outrage to prove that “President Obama (or other “liberal”) is trying to take our guns away….even though there is nothing coming out of the White House or Congress to justify this stupid notion.

The funny thing is, I grew up around guns. I’m a good shot but I do not own a gun. Since the 2nd Amendment seems to be sacrosanct in America, all you gun advocates, knock yourselves out; pack heat…it’s your right. But don’t come crying when you or yours are the victims of gun violence.

Another thing, just a reminder. You guys have to realize that the real enemy of Americans is not Bin Laden or that lone crazy shooter.  The real enemy of USA is still the Zionist Lobby, The Military Industrial Complex and the 5% oligarchic ruling class represented by Democrats and Republicans.

Don’t let this event derail your anger against the satanic Democrats and satanic Republicans who are our real enemies. And who don’t want a third socialist workers party to rise to power and kick Democ-rats and Republic-rats from the US government

After watching the theatre of the absurd that the American political process has become, can you folks honestly tell yourselves that this slaughter came as a SURPRISE?
This summmer, the 24/7 news was showing us idiots walking around shopping mall parking lots with automatic weapons on their hips while the crazed crowds screamed. Arizona reprised pre-apartheid South Africa with race hatred-spawned laws. Now, everybody is shocked?
And I don’t want to hear this reasoned crap about “it isn’t the weapon” right now, either. It is both the wingnut and the fact the our society encourages fools like him to get packing and strapped to kill. Make it difficult or impossible for a lunatic to get a gun and he is just a lunatic, not a killer.

This is not related to this specific topic, but it is a very nice message of inspiration and motivation for the dark pessimist times that we are living today:

Colossians 3:1-17
Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.  Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.  But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.  Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.  Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.  Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

When was the last time that a nut-job who frequented liberal and progressive web sites then went out and tried to kill a Conservative politician or prominent community member? In the last 50 years, with all the political murders and attempted political murders, I only remember 3 against right-wingers:

George Wallace, crippled by a guy who was stalking Dems and Republicans as well and had no political agenda.

Ronald Reagan, who was shot (and survived) by a guy who wanted to impress Jody Foster, another non-political nutjob.

George Lincoln Rockwell, head of the American Nazi Party, shot by a disgruntled rival.

Hello my friends, it is better to be scientific when judging things instead of jumping to conclusions. I really don’t know what to say about this event. It could’ve been a government covert-patsy. However you guys gotta realize that there is an ultra-right wing nazi movement in the USA that has been rising after Bush took power in 2000.

Noam Chomsky predicted the rise of the far-right wing nazism movement in America.  You people have to realize that nations without an organized left like USA, naturally give rise to far-right wing demagogues like Adolf Hitler in Germany or Franco in Spain.

However another version of this event is that this could be a covert zionist agent as a pretext to install a zionist police dictatorship in America.

Only God and Socialism can save USA.

What bothers me is the endless back and forth—- “he read Marx…no he read Mein Kampf…he was a right-winger…no, he was a leftist.”

He WAS a kook. His actions prove it. Whether he was “inspired” by Palin, Marx or Mickey Mouse, he was bound to do violence. Dissecting his motives is meaningless. It’s our culture that we need to start analyzing and doing something about.

Did you see the Nader interview here a couple of days back?

This sort of thing doesn’t coalesce action from the left it weakens us.  Next time you’re in a voting booth you will vote for the Democrat rather than the progressive because you don’t want the right wing nutjobs to get elected.  It’s pathetic, really.  Nader was polling at 3-5% and ended up with 700,000 votes, less than 1%.  That means 2% of his supporters bugged out and voted for Obama.

Now look what you’ve got.  Obama let his mandate turn to shit before our eyes and we’ve got a pack of sniveling fucking thieves running our government.  It was simple strategy.  Let the GOP win control of congress so Obama has something to run against in 2012.

Pass the worst piece of shit health care “reform” bill that fucks America in the rear end and now instead of having 40 million with no insurance we have 75 million. Gitmo… still open.  Afghanistan… expanded.  Iraq… yeah buddy, still there too.  Jobs… don’t get me started.

So what exactly has the government been doing for the last 2 years?  I mean when they weren’t busy sending me a fucking form to fill out to re-register my LLC every 2 years?  Helping the small businessman?  Making us more competitive?

Pfffffffft.  I have quit politics…. I can’t take this shit any more.  It’s too fucking stupid.  I have given away my website and stopped reading the news.  If there’s going to be a gunfight, fine, fuck ‘em they can just fucking SHOOT ME because I don’t give a shit any more.

If you are 25 or younger reading this, I apologize on behalf of my Age of Aquarium generation that declared victory after we beat Nixon and went home to our bongs.  Sorry about that.  We really fucked it up for you, and pretty soon a whole bunch of us are hitting SS age.  If I were you I’d be weighing the possibility of a “Soylent Green” solution.

I must be nice to have the answer just like that and demean other commentators in such a callous and arrogant manner.
This is not a circle jerk as you put it. This is a time for us to make some kind of sense for what has happened, even if only for ourselves.
It is way too early for anyone to say this man was insane. He may well be and it sure looks like he was out of his mind, but this shouldn’t exonerate what he has done. Pleading insanity has always been a way for murderers to say “I didn’t know what I was doing.” And calling him insane shuts down the debate of why he did what he did and what made him do it.
What part of “Thou shalt not kill” did he not understand?
Or was killing and violence all he had grown up with, all he had seen and heard, and glorified as a national pastime and job opportunity?
Did he listen to the racist, homophobic and fear-laden pundits on talk radio and tv screaming FIRE in a crowded theater 24/7?
And what about the thousands and thousands of troops coming home after years and years of killing and being witness to violence that we can only imagine 24/7? Would you call them insane if they came home and couldn’t relate peacefully to those who crossed them, imagined or not?

For myself, as long as we allow those public voices to spread fear and hatred, in other words, to yell FIRE in a crowded theater, we will see poor souls like this man make that FIRE a reality.

My heart goes out to those involved and I am very sad for their families. We all are.

But should we be surprised?

1 Gun toters at the health care ‘town halls’

2 Right wing talk radio’s fear, anger and violence factory

3 Republican ‘leaders’’ guns and rhetoric

Won’t tell you where I am, but free world class University for kids (well almost…  $500 for the year tuition and all), best health care (includes dental and all) covered 90%, 100% for hospital stays and other emergencies, economy is not so good like everywhere but we’re still doing quite well and we are still…  FREE !!!  (more than any of you ‘meriKan can say)

Last time anyone got shot here?  I don’t think it ever happened in the last 8 years since I got here.

Actually, the shooter is turning out to be a bit “left-wing” and part of that whole 2012, one world currency conspiracy culture.

“A young woman in Arizona, Catie Parker, claimed on her Twitter feed that she went to high school and college with the gun…man, and was in a band with him. She described his politics in the past as “left wing, quite liberal, & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy.” She also described him as having a lot of friends “until he got alcohol poisoning in ‘06” and dropped out of school. “Mainly loner very philosophical.”

Parker described the gunman meeting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords previously: “He was a political radical & met Giffords once before in ‘07, asked her a question & he told me she was ‘stupid & unintelligent.’”

Of course it has to do with guns and the power of the NRA but what I find most interesting is how the media is still equating the fear of congress people from both parties to speak openly with their constituents.
I can’t remember any “progressives” speaking about “2nd amendment solutions”, or about the right to carry guns to redress the work of the demon socialists.  Once again, in order to show some kind of balance the media is putting forward a straw progressive to avoid laying blame where it belongs. Recently in Canada the NRA was confronted when they attempted to expand their reach and found themselves denounced as “extreme” by liberals.

I’ve seen the Map of Sara Palin’s web site that has been referred to as targeting this congresswoman amongst others thruout the country. She should bear some responcibility in this if it can be shown that this lunatic was in part incensed by her ...but that would be a simplistic cop out for a media that continues to give all these “hate mongers cum politicians or journalists” a platform to spew from. We need very much to get control of a corporate media that has no interest in informing the public of the truth….Our media was monopolized during the Clinton and then Bush years to what it is now with people like R. Murdock calling the shots as to what we even see at all. We continue to pretend this is a democracy while we don’t care that were not even informed to make a decision in the first place….pretty pathetic, but I guess we deserve it, for not participating at all and leaving it up to former Lawyer ( Liars )and snake oil salesman.

Sarah Palin is a disgrace to America and to any concept of democracy. Her answer to everything she doesn’t agree with is to put a bulls eye on it and shoot it, so this tragedy was a tragedy just waiting to happen. You can’t go around urging people to shoot Julian Assange and putting targets on certain districts and not have someone take your directions seriously. And the Republicans know it perfectly well but they are so politically ruthless they just don’t care. You can’t give out these calls to violence and shooting in America where there is a gun for every man, woman and child - all 300 million of them - without these kinds of consequences. The Republicans are very fond of power but have no interest in responsibility and this is obvious in the kind of pseudo-patriotic crap that passes for policy in their ranks.

Report this

By the worm, January 8, 2011 at 5:35 pm Link to this comment

Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck had nothing to do with, I bet.

But here’s something to think about:

The Republicans long ago decided on this approach and they have stuck with it.
It would pay in the long run, they believed, and so, they have not varied.

The approach - Change the culture and it will be easy to change the laws.

This in contrast to what they believed to be the Democratic approach - Change
the laws to facilitate change in the culture (e.g. voting rights act, etc).

So, determined and with lots and lots of money, the Republicans began:
Capturing a network (Fox), capturing talk radio, building an extensive network
of ‘psuedo-think tanks’ to serve up ready made quotations, etc.

And, so, the Republicans have built their success on the success of their effort
to ‘change the culture, so changing the laws will be easy’.

But, here’s the core hypocrisy: When ever things like this happen, the
Republicans had nothing to do with it.

Oh? Nothing to do with violent acts that arise from fear, ignorance, violent
rhetoric? Hmmm.  I doubt it. Me thinks they do protest too much. The
Republicans know full well what they’ve done.
