Talks between congressional leaders charged with coming up with a plan by Wednesday to cut the national deficit by $1.2 trillion have descended into squabbling and finger-pointing, suggesting that automatic cuts to domestic programs, Medicare and defense spending—rather than a mix of cuts and tax increases—are inevitable.

Republicans remain stubbornly opposed to raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans, while Democrats insist that a deal could be reached if Republicans would agree to allow the Bush tax cuts for the rich to expire. —ARK

The New York Times:

The testy exchanges — which dominated the Sunday talk shows — made clear that leaders in both parties now see the so-called sequester — a term meaning an automatic spending cut — as the most likely solution to reduce the federal deficit by $1.2 trillion over 10 years, instead of a negotiated package of spending reductions and tax increases, something they have been unable to achieve over the last 10 weeks.

… The focus increasingly is turning to how to perhaps change the mix of automated budget cuts before they take effect in January 2013, if no budget deal is reached this week.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that domestic programs would be cut by 7.8 percent, Medicare spending would fall by about 2 percent, while the biggest cut would be to defense programs, which would be reduced by about 10 percent.

It is sheer insanity to believe that there is a Democratic or Republican Party.
A literal handful of international thugs have developed a system to subvert Democratic nations allowing them to loot natural resources and treasure without benefit of oversight. Who do you think people like Cantor and Norquist represent. Your Nation is held hostage by thugs. Until you are willing to take direct action the theft will continue.
In every Country they’ve attacked all social programs. Unions and educational programs have been gutted. The middle class has been destroyed and 20 to 60 percent of the population has been driven into extreme poverty. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FASCISM!
  F@&%‘em all.

Blueokie I call it as I see it. A lot of people don’t want to hear the truth because the can’t handle the truth. Everyday the Republicans say that their main goal is to make Obama a one term President. They don’t care if people suffer. They don’t care if unemployment remains high. Their agenda is to stop Obama from winning reelection. Even if it means electing the man who was for health care and abortion before he was against it.

The Republicans went into the Supercommittee intending for it to be another way
to gut crucial social safety nets. It seems that whether the committee comes to
agreement or not, the only losers are those who are not part of the 1%

Rodney - Thanks for that bit of fluff propaganda from the DNC

Conservative Teacher - Obama’s getting exactly what he wants, I would say thats
pretty effective leadership.

The purpose of the uber-politbureau was never to reach a consensus, but to give
both arms of the Imperialist-Corporatist Party an opportunity to shake down the
special interests for protection money.  Once their planned failure becomes
obvious, expect the automatic cuts to go into effect for all social programs, while
the “parties” find miraculous consensus to save the war profiteers, the Visagoths,
after all, are at the very gates of the Empire!

Where was President Leadership on this one? Sitting out yet another major political situation on the sidelines? He’s no JFK, that’s for sure- more of the same old vote present and be partisan.

Is it coincidence? Every article ( rare as they are) that shows the true incompetence of the Democrats seems to be boycotted by the loyalists that infest these threads.

Ms. Miller, your words ring hollow indeed when you use this forum to pimp your dresses!

It seems more and more obvious that the only hope for advancing a progressive agenda lies with the growth of a third party.

Do you believe there was ever any real intention to reach a deal. You’re just being taken over the hurtles one more time. The “super politbureau of 8” is the continued “shock and awe” assault on Seniors, Vets, Social Security and Unions. It’s the Friedmaniac Chicago Boys, the Washington Consensus, IMF and World Bank dismantling one more Democracy. This time it’s your Democracy.

I can’t believe but that at the last moment cuts to the Pentagon’s funding will be avoided.  All else is on the table.

Can you say dysfunctional?

Whether in the majority or in the minority Republicans seem to be in charge. So tell me again why I should vote for the Democrats?

It seems more and more obvious that the only hope for advancing a progressive agenda lies with the growth of a third party.

There is not an agreement because the Republicans
refuse to negotiate in good faith. They will settle
on tax increases only for the poor and middle class.
They refuse to allow any tax increase on the
wealthist 1%. Bush, the worst President in American
history gave it to them and they will never give it
back. Democrats have met them more than half way but
they don’t want it more than more than half way. They
want it their way. Plus they would rather nothing
gets done in order to characterize President Obama as
weak, or as letting him achieve an agreement on an
important issue for the good for the country. Their
main goal was for Obama to be a one term President
and to make sure all of his proposals fail. If the
country suffers so be it. The Republicans have put
America on notice. As long as Obama is President
nothing will get passed, whether it is a jobs bill or
tax breaks for anyone except the 1%. They would
rather America default and be destroyed than anyone
by the name of Barack Hussein Obama lead this
country.
