Assad Arranges Rallies in Praise of RegimePosted on Jun 21, 2011
Tens of thousands of Syrians took to the streets in support of President Bashar al-Assad in demonstrations across the country Tuesday, many at the behest of the government and their employers. The spirited assemblies were organized in an attempt to show popular support for the authoritarian regime. They came a day after Assad made a speech offering vague, palliative language alluding to future changes in his rule. The government also offered amnesty to thousands of arrested protesters. But many on the opposition side say that the government’s brutal, ongoing crackdown on dissent shows its true nature. —ARK

Bashir Al-Assad learned well from his father how to put down an insurrection. First, don’t let the demonstrations reach a critical mass like what happened in Egypt and Tunisia. Second, strike fast and hard with an absolutely loyal force. Third, keep the foreign press away. Follow these three simple rules and you and your heirs will rule for a long long time.

Must’ve had guns pointed behind them. All governments are violent and petty. Sierra Leone much, emperor Assad?
