Amy Goodman Wins Major Settlement Over 2008 Police AbusesPosted on Oct 3, 2011
Amy Goodman and two former “Democracy Now!” producers have won a $100,000 settlement three years after police stormtroopers surrounding the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn., battered, bloodied and arrested the journalists. Most of the settlement will be paid by the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, while the U.S. Secret Service has agreed to pay $10,000. Rather than assist the victims of the incident, a Secret Service agent seized the press credentials of the “Democracy Now!” team. Goodman said the settlement “should be a warning to police departments around the country to stop arresting and intimidating journalists.” Goodman will use the money to support independent journalism, the Associated Press reports. —PZS Advertisement Previous item: Income Inequality and the Death of Culture in New York City Next item: Prisons to Provide Treatment for Transgender Inmates New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. Michael Cavlan RN,
I don’t watch Hartmann that much to come to the same conclusion as you do.
I have seen him citicise Obama.

He is more enjoyable to watch than most other media shills and I find his off script persona more trustworthy.

Link TV rocks.
Thom Hartmann is a shill. A nauseating shill for Obama and Goldmannn Sachs pseudo democracy. People with even the slightest knowledge of political reality know that.
Carry on. No TruthDigger Awards for me.

John R.,
I concur with your views about Amy Goodman as well, she is an asset to us all and a pain in the ass to some.
On DirecTV channel 375 is Link TV which hosts Al Jazeera and other documentaries the MSM refuse to air. RT with Thom Hartmann is another fine source of alternate news.

I am somewhat unhappy about this settlement because I believe Amy Goodman should have received much more. Amy is a renown worldwide as a respected journalist of considerable prestige and credentials, and to see what I saw what was done to her and crew made my blood boil. I wanted the perpetrators to be immediatedly punished. This settlement doesn’t cut it for me. They, the perpetrators, deserved to be punished for excessive use of force, and careless and reckless disregard for Amy and her crew’s civil liberties. She and her crew were totally violated and the issue should have been forced into the jury courts so that she could have received punitive damages. That is what I would have liked to have seen, PUNITIVE DAMAGES. That way the perpetrators will forever be deterred from treating anyone else like this ever again - they will think 3 or 4 times before using excessive force like that again. It’s just like THE WALL STREET PROTESTERS. They are being arrested on trumped up charges which are ludicrous. The country needs to be taken back by the people of America.

Oh yes and I forgot.
Police Chief John Harrington who was the local man in charge of the out of control police forces in St Paul during the RNC and gave numerous Press Conferences lying about the protesters and his police force, has since gone on to bigger and better things.
He is now the Minnesota Democratic Party Senator representing the suburb north of St Paul. I have contacted Amy Goodman about all of these. Hope she at least gives it a mention.
Gasp- Exposing Democratic Party complicity in, well take your pick these days? Guess I can forget that TruthDigger of the Week Award again, eh? Can ya dig it? As in Truth Dig it?
Well gotta go. Kind of busy with occupations, protests and such.
Clickity clackity, fingers furiously flying away, blogitty blogging, blogs of blogs who blog about blogs.

I so admire this woman. I don’t always agree with her on every point but believe her heart is pure. I wish every news venue would start focusing on the police in this country. Starting back with the monster who shot the family dog in a traffic stop in Tennessee and going forward state after state. We are becoming a police state and one has to question the psychological profiles of the people who we give guns and badges to. I’m sure there are a lot of good ones, but we need to get rid of the bullies that get into this for power.

This is wonderful. Big congrats to Amy Goodman. Myself and others may have issues with her on a variety of topics and issues but none the less, congrats.
However, there is something else to be said here. I am a Nurse and was a Street Medic during the RNC in St Paul 2008. There have been multiple law suits that have been thrown out. Repeat, multiple lawsuits have been thrown out. I myself had one in place and after seeing virtually every one being rejected by the court system, I stopped pursuing mine.
In fact there is a young man that I know, Elliot Hughes who was TORTURED, actual torture by the Ramsey County Sheriff office during his arrest. Knocked unconscious, woke up in a pool of his own blood with Ramsey County Sheriff’s applying painful pressure points to his jawline and wrists. It went on for TWO HOURS. Also another young man who I do not know was also likewise tortured.
During the RNC, I received a frantic call from fellow medics when Elliot and the other young man was released, bloodied and battered from the jail. I was too far away because I was doing Street Medic at the Indian Occupation of Dakota Land in Minneapolis, Fortunately, my friend Michelle who is also a Nurse was close and she got there, treated Elliot and the other kid, documented the evidence with, had them taken to a nearby hospital and treated further.
I am delighted that Amy Goodman and the other Democracy Now team won this. There are hosts of other who have had their cases thrown out. I would hope that Amy Goodman at least gives them a mention and highlight that injustice.

Right, they’ll get this covered under some DHS grant.. and the politicization of our LE agencies and the DOD continues.
And where is the MSM on this important story?
Adios!

@ PatrickHenry
Agreed.
At least its going to a reporter that I believe has kept her heart very close to her
decision making. I do love the “Democracy now” site.
Did you post at Aljazeera? That too, is a very interesting site. I may have heard
Report thisabout that one from you I think.

So the taxpayers pay out.
A better rememdy to rein in out of control police would be to require them to carry and maintain a bond which any lawsuits against them would satify. If they screw up and lawsuits result, the bond premiums rise.
This way the taxpayer isn’t strapped by the hiring and swearing in of bullies.
