Disney friends: Fans of Piglet pause to pose at Gay Days at Disney World in June 2006.
Just how g-a-y is SLC? Well, it’s actually The Advocate’s surprise winner atop this year’s “Gayest Cities in America” list. Clearly, the GLBTQ-targeted mag’s editors were looking to depart a bit from usual suspects such as San Francisco and New York and declared that Utah’s capital “has earned its queer cred.”
Some other picks of the 2012 city litter are also a bit unexpected—take the runner-up, for example. Big snaps, O-Town! —KA
2. Orlando, Fla.
Besides hosting Gay Days at Disney World, where 50,000 LGBT folks and their kids dressed in red T-shirts invade the theme park the first Saturday in June (and spend $100 million in town), Orlando has more gay softball teams than you can shake a Louisville Slugger at. And residents just got domestic-partnership protections. For non-Mickeyphiles, there’s oodles of homo content each year at the annual Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival (OrlandoFringe.org).
