Americans Still Blame Bush for the Economy

George W. Bush
White House / Paul Morse

The Harris Poll asked a couple of thousand Americans who, if they had to pick just one, was most to blame for the economic clusterfudge, and they chose George W. Bush, followed by Wall Street. Only 4 percent picked Fed Chair Ben Bernanke.

Just 14 percent of those polled—less than half Bush’s number—blamed President Barack Obama. Sixteen percent blamed Democrats in Congress and 9 percent blamed Republican legislators.

A big concern for Democrats heading into the 2010 and 2012 elections is the degree to which they now own the recession.

If you take the presidents (Bush and Obama) together with their respective parties in Congress, 40 percent of those polled blame the Republicans and 30 percent blame the Democrats.

That may seem like good news for Donkeys, but the Democrats should be careful. First of all, George W. Bush isn’t going to be on the ballot any time soon. Second, the question is whom do you most blame. There’s plenty of anger to go around.  —PZS

Harris Poll via BusinessWire:

Adding to the roster of Republican woes is the fact that the memory of President George W. Bush and the state of the economy he left as part of his legacy still sticks in the craw of Americans. When asked whom they most blame for the bad state of the economy, former President Bush tops the list, singled out by 31%. Wall Street, a major contributor of funds to the Republican Party, comes in second as most blamed by 25%. Then, much further down the blame list, are Democrats in Congress (16%) and President Obama (14%). Republicans in Congress finish next at 9%, with Federal Research Chairman Ben Bernanke finishing last at 4%. This result is significant because there is little doubt that whoever is perceived as “owning” the state of the economy is likely to suffer both next November and again in the presidential contest in 2012.

You Bush haters really crack me up. No freakin’ clue about history. All I see are Democratic talking points and Olbermann rants as the “facts” in your arguments.

Wrong.  The Democrats believe in FORCING an equal
outcome for everyone.  Dream on.  You can’t spend your

WHEN WILL THE PEOPLE WAKE UP AND GRASP THE UNVARNISHED TRUTH THAT EVERYTHING THAT IS FOULED UP IN THIS COUNTRY CAN BE PLACED RIGHT AT THE FEET OF THE WORTHLESS, OBSEQUIOUS,SYNCOPHANTS IN CONGRESS ?!!  NO EXECUTIVE, WHETHER IT BE FDR, NIXON, CLINTON, BUSH,OR OBAMA CAN SINGLEHANDEDLY DAMAGE AMERICA WITHOUT A COMPLIANT,COWERING BUNCH OF TOADS IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE WHO ARE THERE ONLY TO ENRICH THEMSELVES AT THE TAXPAYERS EXPENSE.

Ripskull,
I would love to know a little about you.  What do you do for a living?  Do you consider yourself blue collar, white collar or professional.  Do you really believe you are free and have control over your life under republican presidents? Do
you not realize that the multi national’s determine all aspects of your life.

How old are you?  Are you old enough to remember when working in a factory could provide a living for your family?  When your company provided good medical insurance for you?  When an illness in the family wouldn’t bankrupt
you? When you could hope to sell your house at a profit and have a decent retirement?  When your company provided a defined benefit pension plan that could not vanish like your 401(k) when the stock market crashed?

Do you remember when the elderly had no medical care and no income after 30 or 40 years of work?  Their children had to take them in and support them.

Is a safety net really so bad?  Do you think you will never suffer adversity in your life and will never need unemployment insurance, SS, Medicare…?

Maybe you don’t care because, maybe like W, you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth.

There are huge philosophical differences between the Democrats and Republican’s.  The Democrats believe in regulation of industry, and an equal chance for everyone.  The Republicans believe in hoarding everything at the top.  They no longer even pretend that it will trickle down.

Middle and lower class people who vote Republican are voting against themselves.

The Obama presidency can be summarized with a single word: DISASTER. Barack Obama makes George Bush look like a genius. While its true that Obama inherited some of this mess, its also true that he and his welfare state policies were to blame for much of it. Who turned Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into welfare programs which led to the crash??? Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, and Obama are up to their eyeballs in blame. Not to mention that Bush inherited a complete mess from Clinton. I know that all the liberals like to talk about the Utopian society that Clinton created, with its balanced budgets and economic growth, but the fact is this: Bill Clinton took over an economy that was in expansion (the Bush I recession had been over for almost two years) and left one that was in recession, with a stock market that had completely tanked long before Bush II took over. Throw in the fact that Clinton left both our military and intelligence capabilities completely gutted, well you get the picture. This was mostly to blame for the bad intelligence around WMD’s.

Back to Obama, he has taken a bad situation and has made it infinitely worse. The reason the Great Depression was the Great Depression was because of Franklin Roosevelt’s big government socialist policies, putting a massive drag on any recovery attempt. This was when we were the world’s largest creditor nation. Now we’re the world’s largest debtor nation and Obama is taking those Roosevelt-like policies to new levels never dreamed of before. Obama has created more debt in the year he’s been President than the entire 8 years of Bush, and almost zero of it was necessary. So this is no longer Bush’s economy, this is squarely Obama’s mess now.

Finally, Obama’s health care theft will be another $3 Trillion spend that we don’t have. Oh I know, its going to save money… right!!! The federal government has such a solid record of “saving” and managing money effectively. Social Security: BANKRUPT! Medicaid: BANKRUPT! MEDICARE: BANKRUPT! The FDIC: BANKRUPT! Annual Deficits: $1.5 Trillion/year!!! Do you know in February the Federal Government spent $3 for every $1 it took in? How long do you think that is going to last?

Every single thing that Obama has done since becoming President has undermined capitalism and economic growth, and has replaced it with the rot of big centralized government and its inefficient and politically motivated controls. Good luck trying to pin this on Bush. We’ll see you in the voting booths come November.

Ripskull has spoken!

**************

You’re right, he won’t, but don’t forget jeb who could very easily
slip in and take o’s place in 2012 because too many people’s
attention have been diverted for them to remember jebs part in
the 2000 election. Then there is marvin and neal, both
harbingers of death and destruction, waiting in the wings and if
eternal vigilance is relaxed, as if it never is, that could mean, at
2 terms each, another 24 years of reign from the house of bush.

Just thought I would brighten everyone’s day.

dude,
I don’t think I’ve ever read a comment as ludicrous as yours, blaming our economic woes on Clinton and the congress alone ? You don’t think Reagan deregulation had a negative effect. How about Bush starting wars and at the same time lowering taxes for the wealthiest ? The Congress up untill 2006, while the republicans had control marched in lockstep as one against the american people enabling the crimes of the Cheney / bush administration. You don’t think that had an impact. You must really limit your information to nothing but Beck and Limbaugh to have such an uninformed puddle of muck between your ears.

In days past corporations paid decent wages because the people had to have money to buy the products that the corporations made. Now that manufacturing is dead in this country the corporate elite could care less about the fate of the working class. These bastards should be overthrown by any means necessary.

CapnRon:
Even Poppy Bush was smarter than that. HIS pick was Jeb, the younger, taller, handsomer and FAR SMARTER brother.  But things didn’t break right for Jeb in Florida and Dumya ended up in position to be President.  Notice how Poppy was INCREDIBLY silent on many issues—it was clear he knew damned well two things:
1) What a disaster #1 son was
2) Therefore #2 son would never get to be President.

As for “Dude!”—He needs to learn basic arithmetic, then basic economics.  Even Milton Friedman, that grand-daddy of “supply side” economics would rate Bush as a THE disaster that sank the economy.

Hey Dude.  Your facts are not correct.  In the 60’s and 70’s the top tax rate was
as high as 90%!  Reagan irresponsibly lowered taxes way too much and caused
a huge deficit.

Clinton raised taxes moderately, balanced the budget by getting “pay-go”
passed and started lowering the deficit.  We were going in the right direction.

Then, along came Bush.  Huge tax cuts, no more “pay-go” resulting in
enormous deficits and rising national debt.  Add lack of regulation to that and
a government wholly in the pocket of corporate America and you have the
mess we are faced with now.

Every President has made some mistakes, but W’s are by far the most
egregious.

That is certainly true that enough blame is around for most everyone in power. Still we don’t know the effect or even what Cheney’s meeting with the energy executives waa about. How much did that have to do with bankrupting the country? How much of not having a War Tax for the first time in the countries history contributed to our financial embarressment? I think we can be certain that an administration that aggressively appointed fools and hostile people to run the programs that American People wanted and regulation that America needed are rightly to be given the larger part of the blame.

The problem is why was this gangsterism unpunished, even uninvestigated?

No doubt, hands down, Bush. THE MOST inadequate person ever to be POTUS. His cabinet, who I feel was picked by his father, played W like a fiddle in a redneck band. He not only bankrupted this country financially, but he bankrupted it emotionally as well. This country cannot recover from those 8 years in just one year, or 2 years, or…. I only hope he and his cabinet are put on public display for what they did in order to minimize it happening again, at least for a while. Obama is using the talent he has available, but there will be newer names once things settle down. Names who will bring a new direction, if anyone can. It certainly should be done. I don’t believe the older names can succumb to change in the degree needed to go beyond to the future. I hope so for my children and grandchildren’s future. I feel like black people must have felt in waiting for civil rights. They shouldn’t have had to, but when will they get there.

How funny…. Bush only helped add to our deficit. I can see blame way back to amending the constitution in favor of “Corporate person-hood” and the first international trade agreement. I blame China, Mexico, and other countries that do not have similar minimum wage standards and occupational safety standards as the US and I blame every US citizen who does not support an alternate unemployment tax on all imports that will supplement and extend unemployment compensation due to outsourcing American jobs to foreign countries.  Take the profit out of outsourcing much needed American jobs to other countries.

Problem is they didn’t address the real initial culprit - Clinton & Congress.  Back when Slick Willy was conning the nation, he jacked up taxes to heights never seen before and is the main culprit for starting this downward spiral.  People don’t realize though, that it’s taken this long to destroy what Reagan built back up.  And actually, you could theoretically go as far back as Bush 1, since Mr. “No new taxes” didn’t exactly keep his word - also thanks to Congress.
