Riot police line up near the site of the G-20 summit in Toronto over the weekend.

Using tear gas, shields, clubs and pepper spray, police arrested almost 500 people at the G-20 summit in Toronto after a breakaway group of protesters smashed storefronts and set fire to several police cars. —JCL

The Guardian:

Almost 500 people have been arrested after a group of anarchists torched police cars and smashed storefronts close to the G20 summit in Toronto.

The Toronto Star, citing security officials, reported that 480 people were detained after violence broke out when several hundred masked protesters broke away from a larger, peaceful demonstration yesterday.

Clean-up crews worked through the early hours to clear away debris. By sunrise, the Star reported, Queen Street West, in central Toronto, had been cleaned up except for scorched areas where police cars had been set on fire. A few shops had windows boarded up.

It’s reported that 20,000 police officers drawn from forces all over Canada, along with a 3 meter high steel fence ringing the meeting sites, came in at a cost of 1.1 BILLION dollars! All this to enable a two-day junket for 20 heads of state to enjoy fine hotels, fabulous food, a few photo ops and, to attend the odd meeting to confirm what their staffs had already worked out weeks ago.

What was that? Oh yes… to agree to cut their deficits, reduce their debts, to not tax the banks (unless you really want to, then it’s OK)... and last, but not least, to set a date for another G20 meeting in Seoul, South Korea for November 2010 to discuss what????? Several matters they decided not to discuss at this meeting!

And who gets to pay the bill for these outrageously expensive “holidays” for the rich and famous?... yup… YOU and I.

Oh… by the way… there were over 600 people arrested and detained, most WITHOUT CHARGES, at a holding facility INCLUDING COMPLETELY INNOCENT TOURISTS RETURNING TO THEIR HOTEL and some joggers who got tangled up in the crowd. Toronto political leaders approved a time-limited law that allowed police to arrest and detain AT WILL anyone they decided to arrest. (The law expired today, June 25, so challenging it in court would appear to be an exercise in futility). Can you spell POLICE STATE?

Apart from the few jackasses who committed the vandalism and who deserve to face severe jail time for doing so, the vast majority of the protesters were law abiding citizens who had serious concerns and were frustrated enough to take the time and effort to try to get a message to these so-called “leaders.” The politicians, as a matter of course, IGNORE THEM and their pesky complaints. Why? Because they can get away with it. Who couldn’t when you have billions of someone else’s money to build steel fences and hire gunslingers to protect you?

Sweet. But be warned, politicians. The masses will not put up with this horrendous waste of their money and resources forever. And when they revolt en masse, AS THEY WILL, your heads will all be high on poles!

But, of course, the politicians won’t change anything. Next G20 meeting the fences will be 4 meters high and they’ll have 30,000 riot goons on overtime pay at your expense. Enjoy!

Absolutely ridiculous.

“Anarchists = CIA operatives trained to exasperate and inflame outrage of the docile, uninformed citizenry to stifle legitimate dissent and to justify egregious spending in the formation of new militarized zones.”

A very accurate assessment.

“A properly functioning system of indoctrination has a variety of tasks. Its primary target are the “stupid and ignorant masses”. They must be kept that way; marginalized, and isolated. Ideally, each person should be alone in front of the TV screen watching sports, soap operas, or comedies, deprived of organizational structures that permit individuals lacking resources to discover what they think and believe in, to engage in interaction with others, to formulate their own concerns and programs, and to act to realize them. This hapless multitude are the proper targets of the mass media and a public education system geared to obedience and training in needed skills, including the skill of repeating patriotic slogans on timely occasions.”
(Noam Chomsky)

“The search of the young today is more specific than the ancient search for the Holy Grail. The search of the youth today is for ways and means to make the machine - and the vast bureaucracy of the corporation state and of government that runs that machine - the servant of man. That is the revolution that is coming. It could be a revolution in the nature of an explosive political regeneration. It depends on how wise the Establishment is. If, with its stockpile of arms, it resolves to suppress the dissenters, America will face, I fear, an awful ordeal.”
(William O. Douglas, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice)

“One of the intentions of corporate-controlled media is to instill in people a sense of dis-empowerment, of immobilization and paralysis. Its outcome is to turn you into good consumers. It is to keep people isolated, to feel that there is no possibility for social change.”
(David Barsamian)

“Poor people living in third-world countries are not the only victims of the so-called new world order. At the heart of this “new” order is a troubling paradox: Poor people within the United States, and the country as a whole, are getting poorer at the same time as the rich within the United States are getting richer.”
(Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer)

Interesting. CIA operatives were blamed for the riots at Kent State that occurred in town, and the burning of the on-campus ROTC “shack”, shortly before the shootings. Deja Vu?

The real story is going on inside the meetings. Geithner and Summers are trying to convince the Germans to stop austerity, and print more money. The Germans are resisting, they’ve seen galloping inflation, and what it can do. The US doesn’t have the power or influence it once had on the world’s economy. We’ve managed to strong-arm the Chinese, for now, but the Germans won’t be so easy.

poolman,

No, not really. The fact that the dollar is used as the world’s reserve currency, has kept it alive, but it’s on life-support right now.

I wonder how much the “peak oil” fraud will play into this meeting since oil is tied to the dollar and has kept our economy at least alive, albeit on life support.
