Alabama Congressman Changes Parties Over Health Care

Griffith
griffith.house.gov

Alabama Rep. Parker Griffith, a freshman congressman who formerly figured among the famous “Blue Dog” Democrats in Congress, has reportedly decided to defect to the GOP after breaking with his party over health care reform. This shift in the Democratic ranks could spell trouble for the 2010 election, especially if Rep. Griffith’s switchover inspires others to follow suit.  —KA

Politico:

Griffith’s party switch comes on the eve of a pivotal congressional health care vote and will send a jolt through a Democratic House Caucus that has already been unnerved by the recent retirements of a handful of members who, like Griffith, hail from districts that offer prime pickup opportunities for the GOP in 2010.

The switch represents a coup for the House Republican leadership, which had been courting Griffith since he publicly criticized the Democratic leadership in the wake of raucous town halls during the summer.

Griffith, who captured the seat in a close 2008 open seat contest, will become the first Republican to hold the historically Democratic, Huntsville-based district. A radiation oncologist who founded a cancer treatment center, Griffith plans to blast the Democratic health care bill as a prime reason for his decision to switch parties—and is expected to cite his medical background as his authority on the subject.

While the timing of his announcement was unexpected, Griffith’s party switch will not come as a surprise to those familiar with his voting record, which is one of the most conservative among Democrats.

“you dont think that the South is anti-progressive you live on some other planet…  if we are to PROGRESS at all -”

“Progressive” is just another recycled label for Liberalism.  Its junk, touchy-feel-good sentiments to make you feel cool and better about yourself.

No one who espouses “progressive” should be taken seriously. Its about slavery - the socialist iron collar around our necks, in exchange for gov cheese. You need proof of the failures of “progressives”, just look at the devastation they’ve visited on inner city blacks.

Of course, your stereotypcial bigoted provincialism against southern states is enough of a disqualifier.  You’re not half as “enlightened” and “sophisticated” as you think you are.

I dont disagree with that, but this article is about a Blue Dog Congressman who says he is switching parties over heatlh care—I am not a fricking Democrat…and, if you dont think that the South is anti-progressive you live on some other planet.

None of the Reps who supported any real reform are from teh South…

Sure the US is the problem, but, with the housing mess the way it is, who can afford to leave? Not me, or I would be gone.

In the meantime, if we are to PROGRESS at all, we cant do it with Old Southern values…your comment also implies that the problem is that Obama is an Af Am—its not. Its that he is a sold out Af Am.

Cause, you know, is the south had “won” , as you advocate, he wouldnt really be voting and, neither would I , as a female, most probably.

All the Blue Dogs should switch.  Then run a Democrat
against them who represents the party platform.  They
did us no good.

I don’t think this is political so much as it is a business decision for Parker Griffith or Griffith Parker or whatever. A Radiation Oncologist(health care)who founded a Cancer Treatment Center(health care)who now realizes you put more money in your pocket by aligning with the GOP then the Dems by killing Health Care Reform. I say business decision more than political also because he only was a Dem because spelling Alabama was close enough to Obama and that way he wouldn’t forget who he represents. Now he only has to remember his bank account number. Much easier for this gentleman of the south.

Right.  Blame it on the South.  Southerners aren’t
exclusively the ones bombing innocents in Iraq,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and who knows where
else at the moment.  The problem is not the South,
the North, the Republicans, or the Democrats.  The
problem is America.  http://theunpeople.blogspot.com/

It makes no difference which party this clown joins.
They both serve the same masters.  The problem with the
US government isn’t the Democrats or the Republicans.
The problem is America.  Until a third party takes
power, nothing will change and America will continue
raping the rest of the world.

hello. agree with just about everybody, but that WWF analogy does not work when the hero becomes the heel to garner sympathy; only to engender support to again become the hero. seems he will be hero to the military industry when he leaves office as a lobbyist (bigger bags of money). there was no difference between the two parties, and when this extremism is snubbed out: there will be no difference again. it is remarkable that such a progressive person, from one of the most progressive areas of Alabama, is not progressive enough for the current Democratic party-: that they are beyond American values. i applaud him for getting out while it was good. it may have extended his career.

I wish Obama would change political parties.  He belongs with the Repugs.  At least then he could tarnish them instead of destroying the liberal remnants of the Dems.

Labels, Labels, Labels, we assume because someone attaches a label that the product is as advertised. Of course we know this is not true in the store or on the Hill.  Fact is Conservative Dems are no more than a mislabeled food product.  When you open the wrapper you find reality. Screw the two party system.

No, Parker Griffith won’t have to take down his tent. (He represents a district near where I live.)  I really don’t blame him, much, for revolting over the health care reform bill, but the health care bill isn’t what made him change party affiliation.  I noticed some months ago that he is not the same man who ran for office. He is in the pocket of the powerful military industrial complex in Huntsville, Al. and other powerful lobbying groups.  Power went straight to his head. So much for the high ideals he spouted while running for office and so much for representing the people of Alabama. I actually encouraged people to vote for him.

Harry Truman used to say that if the people wanted a conservative, they’d vote Republican and get a genuine one, the old original model.  This guy is just looking ahead.

Good riddance. If Democrats can’t find reasonable empathetic people to support and to run in our name, they/we are failing miserably and should start a new party.

This article is written under the pretense that there is a difference between the democrats and the republicans in Congress. I think we have all seen the fallacy of that premise. This is not news, there is no appreciable difference. Neither of them are concerned with what troubles the majority of americans. Both are only concerned with suckling on the people’s tit as long as they can, fattening their wallets by training for the lobbying job they will begin once voted out of office. Its a revolving door that precludes representing their constituants. Its the entertainment branch of industry / goverment called politics. Take a look an C-Span sometime, see how many of our supposed representitives are busy taking care of our buisness.

Yet more proof of what another post described as the World Wrestling Federation that is American politics.

The “hero” becomes a “heel” (in the vernacular of pro-wrestling) and vice versa.

In the end, they all work for the WWF - the corporate interests.

Tip of the hat to the poster that came up with that analogy. It’s perfect.

This is written as if ‘blue dog democrats’ and ‘republicans’ were two separate things.

If this dude ‘changed camps’, my guess is that he didn’t even have to break down his tent and move it 5 feet to do so.
