While “serious,” the situation in Afghanistan is no longer “deteriorating.” So says Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of NATO forces in the country, pointing to progress in the military effort there. —JCL

The Telegraph:

Speaking in Istanbul before the anticipated offensive against the Taliban-held town of Marja in southern Helmand, Gen Stanley McChrystal gave a strikingly upbeat assessment of the situation in the country he said last year was in danger of slipping into Islamist hands.

“I still will tell you that I believe the situation in Afghanistan is serious,” said Gen McChrystal, commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan.

“I do not say now that I think it’s deteriorating. I said that last summer and I believe that that was correct. I feel differently now.

“I am not prepared to say that we have turned the corner. So I’m saying that the situation is serious, but I think we have made significant progress in setting conditions in 2009 and beginning some progress, and that we’ll make real progress in 2010.”

What is deteriorating is the public’s patience with these endless wars of empire and the continuous fear-mongering by a behemoth that is scared of its own shadow, and the public’s taste for endless lies and spurious justifications we heard all throughout the VietNam war.

What is deteriorating is the effectiveness of the propaganda machine in keeping the conscousness level of the American public in a stupor, and the controls that counter-act the threat of real democracy in the US.

What is deteriorating is the acceptance of billions to corporations and war, and the willingness to allow the corporate gutting of social services.

What is deteriorating is the gullibility of the American people.

Yankee, go home!

There was a movie back in the sixties called “Situation Hopeless But Not Serious”.  That’s the Afghan situation report that should be placed on Obama’s desk each day.

Making things McChrystal clear:  “I am not prepared to say that we have turned the corner. So I’m saying that the situation is serious, but I think we have made significant progress in setting conditions in 2009 and beginning some progress, and that we’ll make real progress in 2010.”

No Longer DETERIORATING? For WHOM? McChrystal defines transparency in the
Obama regime, just as Obama’s race epitomizes the only CHANGE from the Bush
presidency.
