A Majority of Americans Supports Legalizing Marijuana

Posted on Oct 22, 2013

We’ve come a long way since Gallup first starting asking the question in 1969, when only 12 percent favored legalized cannabis.

The latest survey shows 58 percent of Americans favoring the drug’s legalization. Majorities in all age groups between 18 and 64 drive that statistic, and even 45 percent of the oldest among us think pot should be legal.

According to Gallup, 38 percent of those polled said they had tried marijuana. That and the fact that two states, Washington and Colorado, have decriminalized marijuana without turning into a “Breaking Bad” episode, may be advancing public opinion.
