Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, who on Monday signaled thumbs up after his country’s first round of local elections, visits the Pentagon in this photo from July 2008.

A year after declaring independence from Serbia, Kosovo has received good marks from European monitors for its first round of local elections, which could lead to wider recognition and acceptance of its newly established status in the international community.  —KA

BBC:

The government had been keen to ensure both the majority Albanians and the Serb minority took part in voting. Security was tight, especially in Serb areas.

Voting passed off peacefully, with turnout among minority Serbs thought to be higher than expected in some areas. Officials put the overall turnout at about 45%.

On Monday Mr Thaci told cheering supporters in Pristina that the PDK’s victory was a testament to “good governance in the republic of Kosovo”.

I’m glad this news has reached as far as TruthDig.

As for the lonely posts below me, I just want to say please remind yourselves that there are gray areas in between their bedtime stories. Please understand that “One country’s terrorists are another country’s freedom fighters”.

Peace!

The Serbs where te great freedom fighters from Europe, their hopeles fight against the Ottoman and their alies and traiters to one’scountry.

Tito put an tremendes war against the germans up, great alies of the Englisch and France.

But The saudies sayd to their USA friends let there be an Moslim state in Albaniê and Kosovo, and so it happened in Kosovo of the age old ruîned Christian churches the crosses where tug of the spines, and the buildings burned to the ground as it happened 350 years earlyer, than done bij the Turks

And Hollbrook sayd bomb the Serbs and so it happend, the Serbs where the bad Indians, with the media and some lies here and there, the stupid people of the so called free west where rijp, and every thing wend to the plan.

Goodby old friends and old alies, and defenders of the Europeên culture, the oily Saudies arm reach far very far but knowing the history of the Serbs, this mousse will have a long taile.

Over half, 55% do not vote… maybe they understand something.  Nothing near Nicaragua’s Chavez’ landslide.  Nonetheless, the West “recognizes” the “legitimacy”, so it’s a pretty sure bet this guy is US corporate-friendly.  The nation’s been torn apart, subject of the West’s Special Attention, the West’s Shock Doctrine (Naomi Klein), including bombing of civilian populations and other NATO war atrocities, crimes that comprise just the worst tip of US’s, ...er, I mean ...NATO’s bloody battle axe.  Once allowed some autonomy in-between the US/USSR MAD standoff, now all bets are off. Warfare, economic, political, but especially fomenting discontent to use as a causis belli “demanding” US er, NATO armed intervention, occupation, and US darlings willingly sell their own country out for a pallet or two of $100 dollar bills.  Appoint a puppet, recognize his “government” with [promised or real, albeit sham] elections, “protect” him with a US-trained National Guard (more beholden to their “trainers”) and voila:  Someone who will sign over the store, so the US can steal it fair and square, (after a bit of strong-arm softening up, of course): The use or threat of use of force for political ends… isn’t that the definition of terrorism?

” We must teach our children ... to resolve their conflicts with words, not weapons. “
(President Clinton [after the Colorado school shootings] urging young people not to resort to violence, while he continued NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, killing thousands of innocent civilians, including children.)
“With unfailing consistency, U.S. intervention has been on the side of the rich and powerful of various nations at the expense of the poor and needy. Rather than strengthening democracies, U.S. leaders have overthrown numerous democratically elected governments or other populist regimes in dozens of countries ... whenever these nations give evidence of putting the interests of their people ahead of the interests of multinational corporate interests.”
(Michael Parenti)
“... the establishment can’t admit [that] it is human rights violations that make ... countries attractive to business—so history has to be fudged, including denial of our support of regimes of terror and the practices that provide favorable climates of investment, and our destabilization of democracies that [don’t] meet [the] standard of service to the transnational corporation…”
(Edward S. Herman)
“In the media, the world is turned upside down. The contras and the KLA are “democratizers”; the lethal sanctions against Iraq exist to deliver its people from their dictator; the destruction of Yugoslavia through aerial bombardment of civilians and their infrastructure is a “humanitarian intervention.”
(Michelle Stoddard)
