The Fort Hood Army base in Texas was the site of Thursday’s shootings.

On Thursday afternoon, two gunmen in military uniforms opened fire in a processing center at the U.S. Army’s Fort Hood base in Texas, killing 12 people and wounding at least 31.  —KA

Update: The New York Times reported later Thursday that the gunman was identified as “Malik Nadal Hasan, an Army major who was about to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.” Hasan, a medical officer who specialized in psychiatry, was killed by authorities. CNN reported that two other soldiers who were detained had been released but that another person of interest was in custody.

The New York Times:

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas told Fox 4 News that one shooter was in custody and “another is still at large.”

She said she was told by authorities that there were as many as 30 wounded.

“It was a processing center where soldiers are processed to go to Iraq or Afghanistan.

“Our hearts go out,” she said. “These are soldiers who are getting ready to go out to Iraq or Afghanistan and their families were under stress already. This was just a terrible tragedy and we don’t even know the extent of it yet.”

Inherit The Wind…

What you expound is theoretically possible, but practically no.  Already the military is saying that friendly fire was involved in some of the shootings and that Major Hasan, though he may have carried two weapons only used one.

Militarism is our only national religion.  Napoleon started it.

Something is not quite right here.  One shooter with two pistols killing 13 and wounding 30 is an almost impossibility.  There are only two answers; more than one shooter or friendly fire.  Another shooter indicates a conspiracy of a terrorist nature and this would not be PC and would lead to much questioning of military procedures.  Friendly fire is a possibility and in light of such shootings a certain level of collateral damage is acceptable to prevent a worse carnage.  The spin on this tragedy will be enough to make one dizzy!

Yeah, Right.  Two 9mm Barettas, each with a 16 round magazine and you wonder how he shot so many in a crowded auditorium?????  Oh, and what about guns on a MILITARY RESERVATION????

Ever here of Virginia Tech?  Over 30 dead, one gunman.

How about Colin Ferguson, who, on the Long Island Railroad killed 16?

You don’t have to be a genius to figure out how it could happen with a single crazy gunman.

Story is, he’s paralyzed.  OK, don’t execute him. Let him live the rest of his life in prison, paralyzed.

Our culture (especially the media) glorifies force and fraud.

Not surprised this happened ... proximity to violence on a daily basis would drive even the most stable personality nuts.  And the shooter being a shrink only reinforces how crazy this whole situation is.  But I’m sure the wingnuts will try to spin this against Muslims despite overwhelming evidence this guy was just on the edge.  I hope the investigate why he was slated for rotation to Iraq after displaying so many personality faults.

What is it going to take to get us to give up this sick love affair with killing?  Forty people killed or injured—where?  In a place that trains people to kill and injure other people.

During World War II, a British pilot opened fire on a reviewing stand full of generals.

They know who the killer is. The other two originally suspected have been released.  The killer was an Army major and a psychiatrist who was going to be deployed to Iraq.  MPs (I presume) shot the major to death.
