How long the U.S. job market lags could have a pivotal effect on next year’s congressional elections.

Analysts looking ahead to the November 2010 election are sounding an alarm bell for Democrats looking to keep or add to their hold on Congress. With nationwide unemployment standing at 9.8 percent and likely to go higher, the notion that the recession has lifted may not sit well with voters as they weigh in on the party in power.  —JCL

Reuters:

The key number in next year’s U.S. congressional election may be the unemployment rate, which last month hit a 26-year high of 9.8 percent.

The figure helps explains why creating jobs is a top priority in the Democratic-led Congress where lawmakers know their own jobs are at stake if they fail to deliver.

Democrats will get an early whiff of whether they are being blamed for the economy on Tuesday, when voters go to the polls to elect governors of New Jersey and Virginia and a congressman in a conservative-leaning New York district bordering Canada.

In next year’s election, the Democrats face a head wind. The party in power typically loses seats in the election after a new president—in this case Barack Obama—takes office.

Questions, questions: With the Rep performance, both now and in the Bush years being so totally destructive of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, it’s hard to see how many disaffected Dems, out of sheer revenge, would be so short-sighted as to vote for Republican candidates only two years after they have won the White House and Congress.  Surely, most disaffected Dems will figure “Give it another 2 years, and use that 2 years to energetically build up a viable 3rd party response for the next presidential.  “Energy” is the key word here—I mean human energy—as disappointment and anger are so debilitating

I have been a registered democrat for 43 years, and have always voted a straight democratic ticket. However,I recently have become disillusioned, and disgusted with them.Individuals such as Max Baucus,Ben Nelson, and the so called “blue dog democrats"have taken it,s toll,if not destroyd the concept of the democratic party.I for one am looking forward to a strong independent candidate in 2012.Hopefully it will be Chuck Nagel.

It doesn’t much matter who you vote for Xntrk, which is why most Americans don’t vote.  the entire electoral system is corrupt.  Insofar as voting goes, voting against the incombent except in special cases is as good as anything else.  Although this may not be the case at the local level.

the crucial effort is to organize American people against the american power systsem. to divide the pro-war Progs from the anti-warriors, the pro-bankers from the anti-bankers, the pro-barbarism from the pro-decency.  An histoircal strategy.

Judging from the performance so far of our Nobel prize winning African American President, and the “historic” Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress, Change We Can Believe In looks set to turn out as a slightly more purple shade of lipstick on the same old Capitalist Pig.

What we need is for Real democrats like Dennis Kucinich and Alan Grayson to form a Real democratic party.

With “Democrats” like Max Baucus and Ben Nelson exercising the crucial swing votes on issues like healthcare, we might as well have the Republicans in control.

At least if the Republicans are the ruling party when the inevitable bankruptcy of the government and collapse of the economy occurs, then it won’t be possible for right wingers to point the finger of blame at supposedly “liberal” policies.

Much as Dems don’t like to admit it, this economy is
as much their fault as the Repubs.  They voted along
with Republicans to deregulate banks and Wall Street,
and there were 8 years of Bill Clinton involved in
the great deregulation decades.  Instead of a
stimulus package consisting of massive public works
projects, we got some public works and tax cuts.  We
got massive bailouts for the rat bastards who caused
this mess with no strings attached.  If we are lucky,
we will get a diluted, half assed health care
“reform” bill that takes effect years from now.  They
really deserve to lose in the next election, but we
really need to replace them with real progressives,
not Republicans.

There’s no reason why we can’t continue to live like Americans in spite of a jobless recovery and rampant unemployment:

No way, fools….
A dark cloud on the horizon for the ruling elite…
Even the dumbest-ass beer swilling, god fearing, flag waving bush loving redneck trash are starting to wake up to the fact that Dems/repugs are two sides of the same coin. Now, if we can just get everyone to vote, and not for above stated autocrats, things actually could change. Saying that, even if elected out, they wouldnt go without a fight. Another false flag 9/11 style job would happen to try to devide the people, but this time I think we´ll go for the real terrorists, the distainful power elite of this country who hate their own people.

First, I am pleased with TD’s response. I ‘reported’ my own post on the Keillor article, and this morning I noticed the ad for OR Books is not blinking and flashing as rapidly. I actually read the article…

Now, Do the Dems have a problem? Absolutely. Health Care ‘Reform’ appears to be similar to what I’d get from a scam artists selling new roofs. When the final proposal comes in, it costs twice the original estimate, for half the work; there are no guarantees; quality is lacking; and he cannot get to it till 2013. Would I buy the roof? No! Whether I am bankrupted by the insurance costs, or by no health care matters little, if I am bankrupt.

That is true in spades for the economic recovery. Apparently, everything is coming up roses for the top 1%. Geithner’s buddies are all collecting big ‘bonuses’ for no work. But, I still have an unemployed son, and 2 others who are living on the edge. Whether or not the axe falls, they are afraid to make any major decisions because of the real possibility of being among the millions looking for work.

As for extending COBRA, that is nice - except most of the unemployed have to decide whether to continue their health care, or pay the rent. The answer often depends on age and health of the victim.

Third Party is the only choice for me in 2010, and 2012. I see no benefit in encouraging our existing autocrats with my vote. If we truly had a DEMOCRACY, this would matter. Since we don’t, it is for my own self esteem only. Protest to the end! Eventually enough people will reach the same point and together, we’ll throw the bastards out.
