Afghanistan’s political drama hit another bump Sunday when Abdullah Abdullah, President Hamid Karzai’s main rival in the Nov. 7 runoff election, bowed out of the race. An aide said Abdullah dropped out because the “odds are illegally stacked against him.”  —JCL

The Guardian:

Abdullah Abdullah announced today that he would not participate in Afghanistan’s runoff election next week, claiming it would result in widespread fraud.

To cheers from thousands of supporters in Kabul, Abdullah said he had not taken lightly his decision, which is likely to prolong the political crisis in the country.

“We will not take part, because of the wrongdoing of the Independent Election Commission and the abuse of power by the government,” Abdullah told his supporters.

His running mate, Homayoun Shah Assefy, said: “We are no longer a candidate and we wish Mr Karzai luck.”

Wow, going from 0% opium production during the Taliban to 86% supply to the west today, not too bad…... Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld was CEO of a major pharma corp before pushing for the Iraqi genocide.
Hmmm…... and now with Haliburton again in Afganistan, and Bushy in the wings with his oil rigs, looks like it´s never been better for the good old boys.  Throw in a privatized prison complex here at home and the rising forses of unemployed young men, I think we´ve finally figured out how to turn this whole mess into a mighty fine profit making party.

The battle between the two warlords is a sham. They are leading hypocrites in a
nation that allows the existence of twenty thousand Heroin producing labs. They
would get more public support if they said that Afghanistan should remain the
leading producer of Heroin in the world. Being truthful might also get them the
support of many other freedom loving people.
