Clinton Lowers the Boom About Al-Qaida in Pakistan

Lahore student protest

Students protest outside during the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Lahore. Inside her town hall event, Clinton had a “lively” discussion with students, but it was “not hostile,” according to an Associated Press report.

During an interview with journalists in Lahore, Pakistan, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed her puzzlement over why certain al-Qaida leaders believed to be harbored within the country’s borders haven’t been caught. She did not address the issue of missile attacks from U.S. drones that had earlier fueled student protest.  —KA

BBC:

Mrs Clinton said: “The world has an interest in seeing the capture and killing of the people who are the masterminds of this terrorist syndicate. As far as we know, they are in Pakistan.”

She said: “Al-Qaeda has had safe haven in Pakistan since 2002 ... I find it hard to believe that nobody in your government knows where they are and couldn’t get them if they really wanted to.

“Maybe that’s the case; maybe they’re not gettable. I don’t know.”

US Ambassador Anne Patterson said Mrs Clinton’s remarks were similar to what the administration of President Barack Obama had told Pakistani officials privately.

“We often say, ‘yes, there needs to be more focus on finding these leaders’,” Ms Patterson said.

This kind of drivel by truthdig is common in the US mass media, deluding decison makers as well as the American population.  So far from ‘lowering the boom’ Clinton was greeted in Pakisan with what the NYTimes calls ‘unremitting skeptism,’ being castigated by the Pak media, and questioners, as well as by demonstrations and bombings.

What would one expect when drones are bombing weddings and funerals, villages and homes, men, women and children.  And this is being done in the name of the American people, for ‘Defense,’ causing the whole nation to hate us.  And being blanked out in the media or being sanitized or even boasted about.

the US mainstream media, both Con and Prog, is a pro-war media.  And truth is the first victim of war.  the anti-war Progs must unite independantly of the pro-war Progs and oppose the American plutocracy that is driving people into the ground.  the anti-war Progs must develop an anti-war, anti-plutocracy truth system to create a viable and effective movement.

Go Gerard, your comment says it all!  Wouldn’t it be great if we dug in and got to work on OUR OWN problems! (Maybe we’re scared we can’t fix them either!)

Drone Attack is Terror…....That sign is most eloquent indeed, and absolutely correct.

You got it, Mrs. Clinton.  Al-Qaeda is not “gettable” especially by taking tens of thousands of U.S. soldierss several thousand miles across land and sea into a culture and territory of which we have no deep understanding and trying to punish them for 911 or force their compliance to our demands. And as to the latest—drone strikes:  May I remind you and the other powers that are trying- to-be that drone warfare is just about the most cowardly method one could think of—a guy sitting somewhere in Florida or Colorado or Nebraska sites his target and pushes a button to bomb people half way across the world who have no possible way to retaliate or escape.  People who do this have to be just about the meanest people alive, and those who condone it are no better.  It’s time to call a halt on this madness and turn toward building schools and hospitals—or simply stay home and mind our own business, such as it is.  Health care?  Pollution?  Green energy?  Fairness in Immigration?  Prison reform?  Wall Street regulation?  It’s not as if we are so perfect that we have nothing to do. Even feeding starving kids in Darfur is a lot better than killing people in Afghanistan, if we are to help in foreign countries.
