San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk fills in for Mayor George Moscone for a day in this 1978 photo.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has changed his tune about Harvey Milk Day, signing a bill on Monday to make May 22, Milk’s birthday, a day of official commemoration for the slain San Francisco supervisor and gay rights activist. Predictably, not everyone in California seems thrilled with Schwarzenegger’s decision, but Sean Penn no doubt is.  —KA

AP via Google News:

The Republican governor vetoed similar legislation a year ago. In the interim, Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in August and was the subject of a movie for which Sean Penn won the Academy Award for best actor.

Penn spoke out in favor of the bill last spring, saying he didn’t want to insult Schwarzenegger’s intelligence by assuming the governor would again oppose creating Harvey Milk Day.

“He has become much more of a symbol of the gay community than he was a year ago because of those things,” Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear said. “That may be the difference from last year: he’s really come to symbolize the gay community in California”

In his veto message a year ago, the Republican governor said Milk should be honored locally by those who were most impacted by his contributions. He did not write a signing message this year saying why he flip-flopped.

larjon you’re an idiot.

What BS! “But what is worst is having a day of remembrance for a person or any person for that matter indulging in in a life style that is punishable by death and saying it’s all ok.”

Only ignorant homophobes believe the human homosexual sexual orientation a “lifestyle” as if it were CHOSEN, and only backward, primitive societies continue with such bigoted and unfair legal attitudes as to punish “it” by death.

Who the hell appointed you to decide for others who they should be?

But, I must admit, there are tens of millions on this planet who think that to bury a woman, accused of some human frailty, real or imagined, up to her neck in the earth and then stand around her throwing stones at her head until she’s dead, is “ok” too! In that kind of world, your attitude seems to be the norm.

No, larjon, what is “worst” as you put it, is the attitudes of people like YOU. There should be a Nobel prize awarded to those whose contributions to making this world a miserable place for millions is similar to yours.

Unless you’re without fault yourself, how about just MINDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

It is sad when our leaders speak out both sides of their mouth just to appease a certain group of people, or even to get or keep their votes, I don’t know.
But what is worst is having a day of remembrance for a person or any person for that matter indulging in in a life style that is punishable by death and saying it’s all ok.

It’s sad again but I know Poor Harvey isn’t passing out ice cream and cold water right now. I can only hope he had a change of heart before his heart stopped.

rollzone…

I have no idea what you’re talking about… and I don’t think you do either.

“...recruitment in the schools by homosexuals is something i completely oppose,...”

Not only does this NOT HAPPEN but it CANNOT HAPPEN. No one acquires his/her sexual orientation by being “recruited.”

Too bad you don’t oppose something REAL and IMPORTANT… such as recruiting young people to sign up for military duty so they can get themselves killed… or the recruiting some religions do by filling the heads of young, impressionable people with ABSOLUTE GARBAGE & NONSENSE.

hello. yes any heterosexual male (...) has a tremendous advantage dating women in the Bay area, and that’s lots of votes, but this is another example of Hollyweird directing public opinion. recruitment in the schools by homosexuals is something i completely oppose, and it is true that days alike these do pay tribute for the wrong reasons. Hollyweird has won a liberal victory over conservative values and continues along its march to world socialism. everyone forgets Hollyweird is fantasy land, when someone without a strong character of their own: receives an award for portraying someone with one. Arnold had no character of his own to ‘out act’ Sean Penn, so perhaps it is not just the lack of a script- but perhaps gay things went on during the steroid body buildup.

Arnold may have the muscles but Harvey had the balls.
