Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi: “I believe there is no one in history to whom I should feel inferior. Quite the opposite.”

Channeling Muhammad Ali bravado with a Kanye sensibility, Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi has declared himself as “the best prime minister,” inferior to no one in history and the “most legally persecuted man of all times.”

Berlusconi tried to define his position as an irreplaceable leader for his country after a prosecutor in Milan asserted that it was “amply demonstrated” that Berlusconi is guilty of bribery.  —JCL

The Guardian:
As Silvio Berlusconi [Friday] tried to shore up his position by declaring himself irreplaceable as Italy’s head of government, a court in Milan was told it had been “amply demonstrated” that he was guilty of bribery.

“I am, and not only in my own opinion, the best prime minister who could be found today,” he told a press conference. “I believe there is no one in history to whom I should feel inferior. Quite the opposite.”

The problem, he explained, was that “In absolute terms, I am the most legally persecuted man of all times, in the whole history of mankind, worldwide, because I have been subjected to more than 2,500 court hearings and I have the good luck – having worked well in the past and having accumulated an important wealth – to have been able to spend more than €200m in consultants and judges ... I mean in consultants and lawyers.”

Berlusconi is not mad. Mad are those who voted for him.

I’m embarrassed for my Italian friends. It can’t be comfortable being represented by someone possessing such outrageous hubris. Berlusconi is all greased up and ready for his inevitable headlong slam into oblivion… it’s just a matter of when, not if.

How the hell do lying thieves like this get elected?

Berlusconi has been a loyal ally to Bush, and now Obama. They should be called as character witnesses. Si or no?

It’s not as if bribery is a big deal.  It’s legal here. Obama squeezed the banks and now the health ins. mass murderers (not to mention the war profiteers) for millions to get elected and stay in power. The money doesn’t go directly, I think, to our pols, but it keeps them in power.  And then after, if there is an after for the U.S., they collect.

So the planet is going to hell, death and destruction are rampant, people are starving. Business is business.

I heard that “spend more than €200m in consultants and judges” bit on the BBC yesterday.  Whether or not he is the best prime minister, he has now given us the best example of a Freudian slip for some time.  (I won’t say “for all time,” since I know things can always get more ridiculous.)  I also liked that line about being “the most legally persecuted man of all times.”  I wonder what the Vatican thinks about that?  Do they just want to dismiss it as being another Rome and another law?
