Sun Sets on Anti-Immigration Sheriff

Posted on Oct 9, 2009

Joe Arpaio has been the focus of protests by immigration and human rights groups, citing his overreach of power and poor treatment of immigrants in his custody.

Joe Arpaio, a sheriff in Arizona known for his rabid anti-immigration stance and poor treatment of undocumented immigrants in his custody, has finally lost the federal power to enforce immigration law—a power reserved for federal agents, not county sheriffs.

The revoking of powers is criticized by pro-Arpaio forces as “political” move by the Obama administration, while others make the point that federal officers enforce federal laws, such as immigration, while state and county officers like Arpaio traditionally enforce state and county laws.  —JCL

The Guardian:

A controversial Arizona sheriff known for taking a hard line against illegal immigrants has been stripped of some of his powers in what he described as a political move by the Obama administration.

Joe Arpaio, a gruff lawman who styles himself as America’s toughest sheriff, has won acclaim from US anti-immigrant forces for his relentless pursuit of mostly Hispanic illegal immigrants in Maricopa county, Arizona, a fast-growing county of 4 million people that is home to Phoenix, the nation’s fifth largest city.

Arpaio’s aggressive tactics include the jailing of illegal immigrants in tent cities surrounded by barbed wire in the middle of Arizona’s searingly hot summers, the reduction of meal costs to 20 cents per day, the use of pink jail clothing for men, and chain gangs for women inmates.

From what I’ve heard from a friend who lives in that area, Arpaio is the subject of
18 law suits alleging civil rights violations. The article actually doesn’t do him
justice. He is viciously racist toward hispanics and profiles hispanic citizens for
minor violations of the law. He is the Southwestern version of the ole Southern
Sheriff of the 1960’s. Arizona is a very backward state with a conservative
governor and two very conservative U.S. Senators and probably a plethora of
conservative U.S. House Members. Luckily for the rest of the Nation, he is only the
Sheriff of Maricopa County.

What can you say about people who don’t know who the enemy is?

They don’t know that the economic misery in Mexico was knowingly created by Clinton and the Republicans in Congress supported by big money which benefits by flooding Mexico with cheap corn which drives the peasants off the land and across the border to become cheap labor to drive down wages in the US. Most illegals have come here since NAFTA. It’s a fact.

These wretched people are not “stealing our jobs”. How can you “steal a job” anyway? Employers hire the most desperately poor people who have no choice but to work for peanuts. Then, the same employers, through the Republican party and other proto-fascist organizations, stir up angry unemployed Americans to further demonize these people, making them more desperate and willing to work for even less. Meanwhile, they are shipping out the good manufacturing jobs to China and the software jobs to India. All the same villains becoming filthy rich on the backs of the working class here, in Mexico, and around the world.

Understand this, people. These wretched of the earth do not have the power to create the misery we are currently experiencing. The villains are the capitalists who have engineered the whole thing. Make no mistake about it. If big business didn’t benefit from it, there would be no illegals working here. They would use the same zeal to root them out that they use against union activists.

Speaking of which, a strong labor movement is the surest guarantee to keep wages high, but the immigrant bashers are also anti-union, sure proof that they are serving the interests of the people’s real enemies.

Chris fretwell wrote that america is"diseased with liberalism”. I have but one question in retort, WHERE? Liberalism, as a political entity has not reared it’s head for over 40 years. Chris is probably one of those neo-con crybabies that saw a black man on the ballot last year and thought that Abby Hoffman was about to rise from the grave.

Once more, for the sake of the intellectually challenged, Barack Obama is not a liberal! He is a center/right clintonian desciple, a corporate moderate with neo-liberal leanings in his international policy.

In short, he is a republican in sheeps clothing. (Jebus, his business policy is to the right Nixon!)

As for this Nazi sheriff, he is mearly a reflection of his constituency. Arizona is one of the most racially fearful states in the US. It’s Mississippi without the swamps. They vote for McCain for chrissake! Once again folks, don’t worry so much about a local, backwoods, nazi law enforcement official, worry about the backward, hateful populace that elected him time and again.

Why stop there, lets gather up every non-liberal in the country and put them in jail and lets gather every book about the founding fathers and burn them. America is diseased with liberalism. America is doomed

Sheriff Arpaio should run for Arizona Attorney General,
or Governor.  If that’s not feasible, then give
Arizona,Texas,Oklahoma,New Mexico and California back
to Mexico; then build a real fence.  Those gloating
over Arpaio must enjoy the cheap Latino labor.

He should run for pres…he has my vote. The slogan should be you cross
you die

A perfect example of why this sheriff needs to be curbed and his (and the poster’s) extremism works against what America stands for, or damn well should.

He’s a good Joe who is just trying to save jobs for
Americans.  Why all the hatred toward him ?

Gentleman’s Quarterly…that’s a good one.  Last I
saw gentlemen didn’t need jobs…they just spend
daddy’s money on silk scarves, Armani suits, and fine
shoes for the golf course.  So I guess you played up
the American labor undermining angle because
gentlemen want to make their filthy money go farther
by creating a surplus labor pool of lawn boys and
pool boys. That is just so L.A. down wages
open the borders completely.  We already have nearly
20% of Mexico living here now and soaking up the
safety net we made for ourselves.  And when the
safety net gets eaten up then they get to go back to
Mexico and we get to stay here and starve.  Thanks a
lot Gentlemen’s Quarterly…here’s to you going the
way of Gourmet Magazine.  Into the trashcan of the
idle rich class where it belongs…

This left-over remnant of the Third Reich is an embarrassment to the people of Arizona, and it boggles the mind to understand why he gets reelected. The overall treatment of prisoners in this country is nothing to brag about in the first place, but Arpaio has made an art form of the abuse of power. His arrogance knows no bounds, and he is the epitome of the swaggering uniformed thugs of the fifties and sixties, prior to the actions of the Supreme Court that brought most of them to heel. I suspect his retirement is being happily anticipated by his victims, his coworkers, and the entire Latino population of this country.

GQ just published a rather damning profile of Arpaio today (and yes, I wrote it, but nevertheless):

Arpaio is quoted as saying: “All these people that come over, they could come with disease. There’s no control, no health checks or anything. They check fruits and vegetables, how come they don’t check people? No one talks about that! They’re all dirty. I sent out 200 inmates into the desert, they picked up 18 tons of garbage that they bring in?the baby diapers and all that. Where’s everybody who wants to preserve the desert?”
