How Fox News Rigs Polls

Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight explains how the mad polling scientists at Fox News manage to produce results that look so bad for the Democrats. Before asking about health care reform, for example, Fox pollsters ask dozens of questions that “run the gamut [from] slightly leading to full-frontal Republican talking points.”

The Fox abuse is particularly egregious (see some of Silver’s highlights below), but the media in general also are to blame for going so poll crazy and for questionable procedures. There’s a tendency to report numbers in the abstract as absolute facts. That can be very dangerous.

Take health care as an illustration. If someone asks, as Fox does, “Based on what you know about the health care reform legislation being considered right now, do you favor or oppose the plan?” Which plan? There are five being debated in Congress, along with countless variations. Does Fox mean the Baucus bill, which would force people to buy insurance? The House public option? The Kucinich amendment, which would allow states to set up single-payer systems?  —PS

Nate Silver / FiveThirtyEight:

The answer may have to do with the questions Fox asks before the question on health care. This weekend, for example, Fox News put out a separate release with their health care questions—but the health care questions weren’t asked separately. Instead, they were questions #27-35 of their larger, national poll, which you can find here.  And what were some of those questions?  Here are a few:

3. Do you think Barack Obama’s travel and speaking schedule makes him look more like he is a candidate on the campaign trail or more like he is the president of the United States?

4. Do you think President Obama apologizes too much to the rest of the world for past U.S. policies?

5. Do you think the Obama administration is proposing more government spending than American taxpayers can afford, or not?

Your get real moment Calitatum was when Barack Obama was elected in spite of Fox Skews throwing everything at him but the kitchen sink. These statistics are meaningless unless you believe that when people watch, it means they agree with it or approve of it or even understand the issues. O’Reilly is an entertainer not a sober analyst and people don’t watch him to be informed but to get their ideological rocks off. Fox’s contribution to actual information and debate is minimal.

Their technique is to get as many conservatives on as possible to lie their heads off and to only get liberals on to shout at them, demean them and distort everything they say. They do this in a number of ways: one is by running carefully edited vision while they’re interviewing one of those crazy liberals which undermines whatever they’re saying. They’ve got a million dirty tricks and they never met a lie they didn’t like. The entire conservative project is based on injustice and elitism so, of course they have to lie. What else can they do? There is no pretense in any of America’s mainstream media outlets that they’re not fighting a war and that in that war they are on the side of the far right. Fox is only the most outrageous of them. It’s one of the ironies of the 20th and the 21st century that as society at large has become more and more democratic and diverse and decentralized the ‘gatekeepers’ of the media and information corporations have become more and more conservative, mono cultural and elitist. The newspapers are going bankrupt and the TV stations have shrinking audiences for their far right tirades. People have moved on and Fox will become more and more a fossil from a by-gone era.

Conservative EXTREMIST sophism, propaganda and Boolean language works on peoples minds and makes zombies out of them, similar to the Roman’s Colosseum, so it is no wonder why so many gravitate to FOX’s Propaganda Channel, but sophism, propaganda and Boolean language is not in the best interest of the country.

I am in GREAT company and you cannot deny the facts:
Fox News averaged 2.25 million total viewers in prime time for the third quarter, up 2% over the previous year. That’s more than CNN (946,000, down 30%) and MSNBC (788,000, down 10%) combined.
“The O’Reilly Factor” led all cable news programs with an average of 3.295 million total viewers for the quarter, up 12% over the previous year. “Hannity” (2.603 million, up 9%), “Glenn Beck” (2.403 million, up 89%), “On the Record with Greta van Susteren” (2.150 million, up 16%), and “Special Report with Bret Baier” (1.997 million, up 20%) rounded out the top five. So all of these 2.25 million are horrible people, with their sole aim to ruin the country. THIS IS YOUR GET REAL MOMENT.

Calitatum you’re so devious if you weren’t a conservative it would be beyond belief. You know perfectly well that any deficit Obama has to deal with is not of his making. Have you already conveniently forgotten that Clinton left a multi billion dollar surplus which Bush pissed up against a wall? Reagan also bankrupted America with his free market mania and loopy foreign adventures and George H.W. Bush did nothing to remedy the situation. That’s why Clinton won on the slogan ‘It’s the economy stupid’.

It was indeed the economy and it still is. The conservatives almost rolled the world economy off a cliff and in a lot of countries now, most recently in Greece, the left have the thankless task of cleaning up their mess. Only someone as delusional and as infatuated with lies as you appear to be could even bring themselves to watch the nonsense that goes on on Fox. Saying you need Fox for balance is completely bloody hilarious since they don’t even know the meaning of the word and have now become a caricature of a caricature.

Get real, Obama is having to deal with cleaning up the mess from the Conservative Movement from Goldwater through Reagan, Bush I and Bush II deindustrializing the United States, engaging in Borrow and Spend Governance, financializing the U.S. Economy, creating a financialized bubble that spread toxic securities and credit default swaps throughout the economy of the world that brought down the United States Economy and the economy of the world and has taken tens of trillions of dollars of socialized responsibility for privatized benefit to clean up the Conservative Movement’s mess.  Cleaning up a mess as big as was made by the Conservative Movement is not easy, cheap, or quick; it took you people from the time of Goldwater to make the mess and you are whining with indignant sophist outrage that Obama has not cleaned up the Conservative Movement’s mess in the few months he has been in office.  Shut up and be grateful that you and the Conservative Movement are not in prison with Bernie Madoff because the whole damn Conservative Movement is cut from the same cloth as Bernie Madoff and have been up to the same thing as Bernie Madoff from the time of Goldwater through Reagan, Bush I and Bush II.

YOU are living in a dream world, an indignant outraged fool most likely as a Conservative Monkey working as a proselytized and indoctrinated part of the Evangelical Christians trying to get to be the Worthy Wealthy by toadying up to the Conservative Movement.

I have been through the sophist propaganda of indignant outrage from foolish monkeys supporting the Conservative Movement since the time of Goldwater through Reagan, Bush I and Bush II and I am not impressed.

You people always say the same thing when you are confronted with what the Conservative Movement has done to destroy the U.S. with Borrow and Spend Governance, deindustrialization, financialization of the U.S. Economy and then getting your corporate cronies on WELFARE for the WEALTHY; calling people names, accusing, condemning, denouncing always, but never being responsible for the destructive effects of the Conservative Movement on the United States and the people of the United States.

You people and your self-centered, self-involved, self-serving greed at the expense of the U.S. as a nation and the people of the United States, are a sickening bunch of fascist opportunists that must be confronted in the same way as Hitler and Moussolini, and brouht to pay as the cause that has effected the United States in such a destructive manner that your Conservative Movement’s actions not only destroyed the economy of the United States, but the economy of the World.

Large government debt also means large government interest payments. Under Obama’s budget, spending just to cover net interest would nearly quintuple from $170 billion this year to $806 billion by 2019.

At that point, 16 cents out of every dollar in federal spending would go toward interest on the debt. Americans already suffering from high interest rates and sluggish growth could face large tax hikes just to pay these interest costs.

Obama and his advisers certainly know this debt growth isn’t sustainable. Yet the White House’s top 2009 priority is to accelerate the spending spree by creating a huge health-care entitlement.

Under President Obama, the 2009 budget deficit is set to reach a staggering $1.8 trillion. It took President George W. Bush seven years to run up $1.8 trillion in debt.

And these deficits aren’t merely a temporary result of the recession; the president’s budget would run deficits averaging nearly $1 trillion a year for the next decade.
The national debt would double. In other words, Obama would run up as much government debt as every president in US history from George Washington to George W. Bush—combined. Put simply, he’d dump $84,352 per household of new debt into the laps of our children and grandchildren over the next decade.

For ignorant rubes that follow the Conservative Evangelical Movement and don’t mind Conservative Right-Wingers giving their hard earned money by the trillions to the Wealthy to bail out Corporate toxic capital, perhaps Palin and Huckabee are a dream team, but for any one smarter than a chimp, Palin and Huckabee are a sick joke; they are both right out of the mold of the Right-Wing Jokers that bankrupted the United States with “borrow and spend governance” and destroyed the U.S. Economy and the economy of the world.

The jokers I am talking about are Goldwater, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II; the last thing the U.S. needs is two more Conservative Right-Wing CLOWNS “borrowing and spending” the Nation further into debt, destroying the economy with deindustrialization and financialization and then putting all of their corporate cronies on CORPORATE WELFARE for trillions of dollars provided by socialized resources of the people of the United States that need to keep their money to support themselves and their families, rather than to be forced to pay tens of trillions of dollars in WELFARE for the WEALTHY that will keep them and their progeny for ten generations in poverty.

Palin and Huckabee are just two more Right-Wing Conservative Corporate Socialists looking to have a chance to root in the trough of government to enrich themselves and their corporate cronies with WELFARE for the WEALTHY, just like Goldwater, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II; if that is what you think a dream team is, it is not my idea of a dream team.  The U.S. already has tens of trillions of dollars to pay for what Goldwater, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II looted from the nation in unnecessary wars, borrow and spend governance, and CORPORATE WELFARE, the last thing the U.S. needs is more of the same from Palin and Huckabee.

You don’t have to be a conservative or Glenn Beck lover, not to love Obama.  ANOTHER POV FROM http://www.prorev.com:

FROM SAM SMITH’S PROGRESSIVE REVIEW:

Saturday September 5

WHY LIBERALS MISREAD OBAMA

During the campaign the Review pointed out a number of uncomfortable facts about Barack Obama, including that he:

Aggressively opposed impeachment action against Bush

Had argued that conservatives and Bill Clinton were right to destroy social welfare,

Supported making it harder to file class action suits in state courts

Voted for a business-friendly “tort reform” bill

Voted against a 30% interest rate cap on credit cards

Had the most number of foreign lobbyist contributors in the primaries

Was even more popular with Pentagon contractors than McCain

Was the most popular of the candidates with K Street lobbyists

Was named in 2003 by the rightwing Democratic Leadership Council named Obama as one of its “100 to Watch.” After he was criticized in the black media, Obama disassociated himself with the DLC. But his major economic advisor, Austan Goolsbee, was still the chief economist of the conservative organization. Wrote Doug Henwood, “Goolsbee has written gushingly about Milton Friedman and denounced the idea of a moratorium on mortgage foreclosures.”

Supported the war on drugs

Supported the crack-cocaine sentence disparity

Supported Real ID

Supported the PATRIOT Act

Supported the death penalty

Opposed lowering the drinking age to 18

Went to Connecticut to support Joe Lieberman in the primary against Ned Lamont

Lent his support, as Paul Street of Z Mag noted, ” to the aptly named Hamilton Project, formed by corporate-neoliberal Citigroup chair Robert Rubin and other Wall Street Democrats to counter populist rebellion against corporatist tendencies within the Democratic Party. . . Obama was recently hailed as a Hamiltonian believer in limited government and free trade by Republican New York Times columnist David Brooks.”

Endorsed US involvement in the failed drug war in Colombia.

Voted for a nuclear energy bill that included money for bunker buster bombs and full funding for Yucca Mountain.

Came in at 48th in the ranking of senators by the League of Conservation Voters

Supported federally funded ethanol and was unusually close to the ethanol industry.

Promised to double funding for private charter schools, part of a national effort to undermine public education.

Supported the No Child Left Behind Act

Favored expanding the war in Afghanistan

Supported Israeli aggression and apartheid.

Favored turning over Jerusalem to Israel

Wouldn’t rule out first strike nuclear attack on Iran

Called Pakistan “the right battlefield ... in the war on terrorism.” Threatened to invade Pakistan

Opposed gay marriage

Opposed single payer healthcare

Supported restricting damage awards in medical malpractice suits

Favored healthcare individual mandates that would help insurance companies and banks but not citizens

Wanted to expand the size of the military.

Wouldn’t have photo taken with San Francisco mayor because he was afraid it would seem that he supported gay marriage

Dissed Ralph Nader for daring to run for president again

Called the late Paul Wellstone “something of a gadfly”

Was ranked 24th in the Senate by Progressive Punch

Said “everything is on the table” with Social Security.

That’s 38 reasons for starters why liberals might have been uncomfortable with Obama.
Some of this was to be expected; for example, history and ethnic solidarity made black support unsurprising.

But even with Bill Clinton white liberal arguments on his behalf still had the tone of slightly embarrassed justification. With Obama there was nothing but idolatry.

Now, with a rapidity that surprised even this cynic, liberals are feeling uncomfortable with, and some even mad at, their instant hero. What went wrong?

Do you think that a few isolated works from one or two individuals can counter balance the damage that the Conservative Movement has done to the United States from the time of Goldwater through Reagan, Bush I and Bush II?

This is what the Conservative Movement has done and continues to do, you support the Conservative Movement; what have you done other than support the Conservative Movement to make amends for the damage you people have done to the United States as a nation?

Your trying to make an example of what you have done as a representation of what the Conservative Movement is all about is ludicrous>/i> and you know it.  If you want me to be impressed, do something to get back the tens of trillions of dollars of <i>socialized resources that the Conservative Movement has taken as WELFARE to the WEALTHY<b>.

I agree with calitatum.  Without having Fox News around, the Daily Show and Colbert Report and Countdown would wither for lack of hilarious content.  We actually need Faux Snooze as a “balance”.  Where would Dean Martin have been without Jerry Lewis ?  Where would Bud Abbott have ended up without Lou Costello?
And without the wholly-owned subsidiaries of Fox and the RNC like Rasmussen and The Lewin Group, polls might become even more relied upon than they are now.  We need outliers (or is that out and out liars ?) to provide a healthy level of skepticism.
Isn’t it a shame Fox was not a big force back in the days of Walter Cronkite and Chet Huntley and David Brinkley ?  Those guys were obviously leading us down the primrose path.  We were all being led astray into hating America by the likes of Edward R. Morrow and John Chancellor.
