Under Duress, Palestinians Cave In on Gaza War Report

The U.N. report details what it calls war crimes by Israel, including the use of white phosphorus chemical weapons against the civilian population. The inquiry also found evidence that Palestinian militant groups committed war crimes.

Under heavy U.S. pressure and threat of being denied critical communication infrastructure by Israel, Palestinian officials have removed their support for a U.N. report that criticized as war crimes some of Israel’s actions during its war in Gaza.

The Guardian:

The UN today put off action on a report criticising Israel’s actions during the war in Gaza after Palestinian leaders suddenly dropped their support for a resolution, apparently under heavy US pressure.

The decision marked a surprising reversal in the Palestinian position which, until now, had backed the findings of the report by the South African judge Richard Goldstone.

Goldstone accused both Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas of war crimes during the three-week conflict.

This is so sad. I really feel for the Palestinians in the impossible situation.

Thanks a lot, U.S. - forcing them to deny the truth of unlawful murder in their own homes.

Hama’s thousands of missles sent into Isrrael was the cause of the war.

Its HAMAS, its not thousands of missiles ( its not even missles), its not Isrrael either….

What we have here is a poster who is the intellectual equivalent of a moss covered rock….Count the casualties between Palestinian and Israeli, a few on th eone hand and tens of thousands on the other…nwo who wages war?

The UN Must Adopt the Goldstone Report

Dissolve the Palestinian Authority

By OMAR BARGHOUTI

“Palestinian civil society has strongly and almost unanimously condemned the Palestinian Authority’s latest decision to delay adoption by the UN Human Rights Council of the report prepared by the UN Fact-Finding Mission, headed by justice Richard Goldstone, into the recent Israeli war of aggression against the Palestinian people in the occupied Gaza Strip.  A common demand in almost all Palestinian statements issued in this respect was for the UN to adopt the report and act without undue delay on its recommendations in order to bring an end to Israel’s criminal impunity and to hold it accountable before international law for its war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza and, indeed, all over the occupied Palestinian territory.

Succumbing to US pressures and unabashed Israeli blackmail, the president of the PA himself reportedly was himself responsible for the decision to defer discussion at the Council of the Goldstone report, dashing the hopes of Palestinians everywhere as well as of international human rights organizations and solidarity movements that Israel will finally face a long overdue process of legal accountability and that its victims will have a measure of justice.  This decision by the PA, which in effect delays adoption of the report at least until March 2010, giving Israel a golden opportunity to bury it with US, European, Arab and now Palestinian complicity, constitutes the most blatant case yet of PA betrayal of Palestinian rights and surrender to Israeli dictates.

This is not the first time, though, that the PA has acted under orders from Washington and threats from Tel Aviv against the express interests of the Palestinian people.  The historic advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in July 2004 that found Israel’s Wall and colonies built on occupied Palestinian territory illegal had presented a rare diplomatic, political and legal opportunity that could have been used to isolate Israel as apartheid South Africa was after a similar ICJ decision in 1971 against its occupation of Namibia.  Alas, the PA squandered it and systematically—quite suspiciously, actually—failed to even call on world governments to comply with their obligations stated in the advisory opinion.”

There’s an undercurrent of equivalence in the who did what discussion. As if
attacking with all the precision and force of a modern mechanized army was
morally equal to lobbing a bunch of home-made rockets in the general direction
of populated areas.

I’d like to see the Palestinian problem be solved in the direction of a greater but
secular and inclusive Israel. A one-state solution including the Palestinians as
citizens is the only solution which guarantees Jewish safety in the long term.

Hama’s thousands of missles sent into Isrrael was the cause of the war. Over many years and hundreds of injuries Israel exhibited patience and more patience. Their obligation is to protect the lives of its citizens. Just like any other democratic county they finally had to act.
the Godstone report was a farce.

A few wildly inaccurate and antiquated missiles causing not a single death or injury provokes a response that slaughters a few thousand and destroys a major part of a crowded city…...Hard to see your point, frankly.

And Abbas cares about criticism of Hamas? Israel may be able to parse things
pretty finely, but lobbing phosphorus shells into an urban area qualifies as a war
crime to me just on it’s own. Not to mention shooting anything that moves, no
matter how obviously civilian. Both of which have been unambiguously depicted in
coverage of the events.

Okay. Hamas’s firecrackers aren’t kosher, either. But who’s the adult in this
situation?

Fatah delayed approving the Goldstone report because it was not prepared to acknowledge Hamas’ guilt for provoking the war as enunciated in the report because to do so would make it seem less hostile to Israel than Hamas, something it cannot do if it wants any support from the Palestinian people who are united in hostility towards the Zionist Entity. Leave it to the Guardian, the British intellectual source of anti-Israel propaganda to concoct some other reason critical of Israel to explain Fatah’s action.

Cases of grave concern to humanity, as those referred to in Mr.Goldstone’s report, should be assaigned to special commission with proper invitagtive and referal powers. For justice to be served,quasi-government under occupatipon such as the one in Palestine, should render its grievances to such commissions, opening the way for a full and unhambered legal process.Being under infamous trios,Zionist occupation,a Zionist tilted mediator and a mediocor West that has no power whatsoever,Palestinian’s chance for getting justice is as impossible as walking to the moon.My only hope is that Palestionians should regurgitate to their revoltionary status and resort to Arms, the only method Israel does understand. This option if chosen, will undress the prevailing Arab regiem and force it to either shoulder its responsibilities or make way for worthy one loyal to its national cause.

The present Palestinian’s leadership has once again and again, proven unworthy of leading people as great as the Palestinians nor trusted to attend Gazan’s donkies let alone negotiating peace with Israel.Palestinian Authority’s request to postpone voting on Goldstone report on Israel’s war crimes committed against Gazans, has blatently revealed how insolent the West can be when it comes to defending Israel.I Am not a Palestinian, yet I do feel that Palestine is a land where all Arabs, Muslims and those believing in human rightousness, should proclaim themselves gardians and protectors of this precious land.As much pain and sacrifice the Palestinians have endured, present government, be it in Rammallah or the one in Gaza, has proven to undermined the greatness of the Palestinian people. The Middle-East will never enjoy peace while Palestine remains under the Zionist occupation.

As I read the harsh criticisms of Palestinian leadership I cannot help but wonder at the lack of understanding of the enormous pressure that had to have been applied here. Palestine is an impoverished and desperate region. They are beset upon by a bloodthirsty and expansionist nation, Israel, and are in desperate need of continuing aid in order to survive.

How easy it must have been for the conscienceless USA to order these people to back away from their position under threat of an end to the food and medical supplies they so need.

Abbas is making his own noose. Even the US General who trains the Palestinian Authority security forces has warned that the population could easily revolt and overthrow the West Bank government if Abbas continues to be seen as a collaborator with the occupation.

“Some western countries, including the US, were also thought to be concerned about the precedent that would be set by such international investigations into wartime actions.”
That pretty much says is, doesn’t it?  Means if the UN investigates Israel, it must also investigate other nations’ brutal “wartime actions.” In which case a lot of people might wake up to the fact that wars, as they become more and more brutal, become more and more immoral and counterproductive.  Then what?  War might become extinct—like the humungous technological dinosaur that it is.

The report also condemned Hamas—so Israel was not singled out by Goldstone.  However, the overwhelming majority of war crimes were committed by Israel.

It is no wonder Palestinians see Abbas as an Israeli/U.S. quisling.  He is on the payroll and undercut anytime he tries to show any independence that might legitimize him in Palestinian eyes.

This article should specify that corrupt, US-backed Fatah “caves in on Gaza war
report.” The Hamas officials who were legally elected would not remove their
support for the UN report, they actually have their peoples interests in mind.
