Polar bears have emerged as the perfect symbol of the tragedy of global warming as they struggle to survive in a melting environment.

President Obama has lowered the bar for December’s Copenhagen climate change conference by talking down the importance of arriving at an agreement on global warming by the end of the year. Obama’s position contradicts the United Nations and others who see the conference in Denmark as a crucial moment for stemming climate change.  —JCL

The Guardian:

Barack Obama has talked down the importance of sealing a global deal on climate change before the end of the year, world leaders said yesterday.

Obama’s comments, made in private talks at the G20 summit, downplay the need to reach a strong deal at UN talks in Copenhagen in December and contradict the United Nations and others, who have billed the meeting as a crucial moment for the world to avoid catastrophic global warming. The president did win a partial victory on his signature climate issue at this G20 summit – removing fossil fuel subsidies – but there was no headway on the much bigger issue of climate finance, which Obama had taken up as his issue at the last G20.

Barring small but significant steps forward from China and India, there has been little progress this week at a UN summit or the G20 towards a deal at Copenhagen. Obama’s remarks yesterday resonated among world leaders, who have been looking to America – as historically the world’s greatest polluter – to lead on climate change.

With the Obama administration, we have arrived at the point of believing in too little, which in politics is more dangerous than believing in too much.

It is crucial that we all work together to make substantial changes in how we live. On all levels and at the same time to help bring up those living in poverty. If we don’t they will be left behind to die. It is good that China is planning on construction of a huge solar generator plant that would put out the same amount of gigawatts as two coal fired plants! We need to to capitalize it and see that profit can come in more than just money. We need to start churning our electic cars and solar panels and film and start covering everything. We need to have started this in the 1970’s and we need to do it now. Not as countries but as a species. Nothing else will do.

We live in a nation where the majority of the population thinks that human activity is not causing global warming. Of course, a majority of americans also believe in angels, and like to watch cars drive in a circle. What does it say about us?

Europe and Japan are moving past us. They are leaving us behind in almost every national endevour. They no longer look to the US for leadership. That chink in our armor that formed nearly 40 years ago has become a large rusty hole. Our old allies are now embarrassed by us. While they all move to make their own nations self-sufficient and enviormentally responsible, we in the good ol USA have chosen to rub shit all over ourselves.

We have become pathetic, and everybody else knows it but us.
