Is Byrd’s Health a Factor for Health Reform?

Sen. Robert Byrd
senate.gov

Not to be morbid or insensitive, but the succession of Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat got us thinking about another Democrat among the 60 probably needed to push through health care reform.

Sen. Robert Byrd, 91, was just released from a hospital after taking a bad fall. His health has been a frequent object of gossip and worry. In January 2009, Wikipedia falsely reported his death.

Byrd was hospitalized in May and then again in June but returned to the Senate, where he voted and spoke.

We hope he keeps on ticking for another 91 years, but if this tough old Byrd flies the coop, what would happen to the Democrats’ crucial 60-seat majority?

According to the West Virginia secretary of state’s Web site, “Vacancies in the U.S. Senate are filled by appointment of the Governor.” The state’s governor is Joe Manchin, a Democrat who would almost certainly appoint a Democrat to replace Byrd if necessary.

It should be noted that having 60 Democrats in the Senate does not mean having 60 votes for cloture in the event of a filibuster against health care reform. There are plenty of Democrats in that body who would like to see reform defeated.

Although Robert Byrd was once elected Exalted Cyclops of his Ku Klux Klan chapter, he has spent decades working against his racist past. His speeches in opposition to the Iraq war made him a hero to many.  —PS

[Thanks, Ryan]

Unless it’s the vote on HR676 in House and the corresponding one in the Senate, who cares?

Would Robert Byrd please just die. He is nothing but an old school, cash grabbin’ dixiecrat. The only thing this old son-of- bitch has accompliced in his all to long political career is to divert as much funding as possible to the backward state of WV, so that they could employ his contractor buddies to build one of the nicest highway systems in the nation. A highway system enjoyed by most West Virginians only once, and that is when they pack their bags to leave. He and Jay Rockefeller should have been pushing vast improvements in the public education system, so that potential employers would actually consider moving to WV. Instead, they and countless corrupt and imbecile governors have stood by and let WV wollow along in the 19th century.

And so what if he was against the war, where the hell was he BEFORE the body bags came home? That’s right, cowering in the corner with the rest of the dimmo leadership, waiting for the repugs to leave so that they could raise their heads from the darkness and whisper “I told you so.”

And where has he been during the healthcare debacle? Taking advantage of his excellent insurance coverage while most of his constituants back in wild wonderful WV have to decide whether to eat today or go to the doctor.

Can you tell I don’t like Robert Byrd?

Is it just me or is everything an important factor in
health reform except improving the health of the
American people?
Is there some “black hole” factor that isn’t tripping
any sensors in the media that keeps confusion dominant?

Yes, it is complicated. So can’t we run up a framework
before Thanksgiving and work the details out next year?

I didn’t I am a Democrat. I said I’m a liberal and a Democratic voter. The Democrats and their new president are leading this country astray and I would like to see them fail. A democratic party that does not serve as an effective counterweight to the conservatives has no value to me.

I puzzle at the comments of those who profess to be democrats, yet want to see an end to the democratic majority in Congress…strange belief set for a supposed democrat I think. One might posit that, if one is against the democratic agenda then perhaps one is not a democrat. Or shouldn’t call himself one…..

I am no democrat, but it doesn’t come down to which major party has the upper hand, neither represents the best interests of this nation or the vast majority of its people.

As a liberal American voter, blue collar worker and Democratic party voter, I say, please God do whatever it takes to kill health care “reform” and please God take away the Democrats majority in the senate as soon as possible. I loved Ted Kennedy, and I also have always kinda dug Robert Byrd. But this health care thing has gone all to shit, and the Democratic party has spun way out of control. I am an uninsured American and I am for universal health care, but I cannot support mandatory insurance without a public option. We need a REAL national health care plan that sidelines the insurance companies, and America is not ready to go there yet. No plan that can get passed this year will be good for our country, and anyone can see that.

We need to defeat health care “reform” that’s a giveaway to the insurance companies in order to be able to develop a rational plan later. Right now we need to concentrate on ending these two wars we’re in and bringing our troops home, and putting people back to work and fixing our economy. Then we’ll be in a better place to work on REAL health care reform. And we have to break the power of the lobbyists and reform the campaign finance system before we can accomplish anything of value and move forward as a society.
