‘Hillbilly Heroin’ Gets a MakeoverPosted on Sep 22, 2009
So many people grind up and inject or snort the powerful painkiller OxyContin that the drug’s maker has had to snap a plastic-like coating around the pill. The FDA says the improvement is marginal at best in reducing abuse of the drug, but better than nothing. More than $2.3 billion worth of OxyContin was sold in the U.S. last year—more than any other prescription painkiller. Gateway drug Forget marijuana. The 2009 National Drug Threat Assessment says “a higher number of first-time abusers of drugs (2,147,000) abused opioid pain relievers [such as OxyContin] than any other drug in 2007,” and “Officials in treatment facilities throughout the country report that many abusers of prescription opiates such as OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin eventually begin abusing heroin because it is typically cheaper and easier to obtain, and it provides a more intense high.” —PS AP via Yahoo: OxyContin, the nation’s top-selling prescription painkiller last year with sales of more than $2 billion, was hailed as a breakthrough treatment for severe chronic pain when it was introduced in 1996. A time-release version of the narcotic oxycodone, it was designed for use over 12 hours to keep a steady state of the painkiller in the bodies of seriously ill patients. However, Oxycontin and similar drugs were quickly adapted by drug abusers who discovered they could get a heroin-like high by crushing the pills and snorting or injecting the entire dose at once. Here we go again with the “addiciton is a disease ” model..as someone who has worked with “addicts” alot of her life, I know that this is bullshit and AA is just a substitute for drugs.
The main reason it is pushed here in the uS, it that it is free, and, the second or third time around or so(after doing your insurance industry appointed 28 days), the insurance industry can dump you for a “pre-existing condition”. It is in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, why?? So insurance will cover it! Its a “disease”!!! Bullshit.
Everyone should be able to make their own decision about drugs. AA is a very dangerous “detox” for heron or oxy. But who cares right? Let them die in the street—its free.
It is NOT true that once you are addicted to opiates, you “have to take something”, either. Ive been off all pain meds for almost 5 yrs.
Its just takes a little guts and pain tolerance.
tony has very good points.
I do think that there are uses for morphine (ie fentanyl) (certainly for things like bone cancer—and alot of other things)but there is no reaosn for Oxycontin to exist. It is just oxycone in an expensive tim e release shell. There are time release patches, etc. But, Purdue made $2 billion off of the damn thing and only got fined $500 million for off-label prescribing without permission of FDA—so its money in the bank!!!!!!!!!!
Three are shitty drs around here , who couldnt get pts any other way who have made small fortunres out of this trashy drug People having seizures and throwing u[ and passing out in the waiting room….. Roaches all over the wall.
Someone should sue them, but, who believes someone who was ‘high”?
All more of the medical industrial complex. And pot is still illegal—it boggles the mind….

There is a guy that conducted a case study of alcoholism dependancy. He
promised a 100 percent cure rate by addressing the underlying causes of
alcoholism. He was successful, and found that drug abuse was due to people
avoiding their problems. He used LSD as a kind of truth serum to break down
these life long walls of protection so that he may get down to the bottom of the
problem. Why do you drink?
What we have known for a long time is that our parents are not teaching their
kids how to handle their problems; thus, not giving them copping skills. No
different than these very same people who avoid getting involved into the
politics of their country.
Another thing that I have a problem with is this. After doing interviews with
patients during my clinical rotations in a psychological ward, I found that these
people are all subject to very poor environments at home. These are not drug
addicts, depressed, manic, and all the other controversial diagnosis. They are
simply people who were not taught how to deal with the problems that
surround them. Often, it is their families that are the real ones who are messed
up. You should see them when you talk to them with this kind of respect. Hope
is what is missing. Instead, e tell them they are born with depression, which is
a crock. Talking about drug dealers, beware of the medical industry. The other
problem is that when the climate of no jobs, no role models, parents who only
pretend to care, everyone so selfish; people give up and just fill the role of a
depressed patient. Resistance id futile.
But don’t think for a minute, that these smart people do not know that
something is wrong; and it is not them. It is just hard top put this stuff in
words, to confront such a big establishment, to realize your family does not
care, to realize that everything on this Earth they are told is a lie. It is no
different than trying to understand the layer of lies found in our political, and
judicial systems.
When medicine stopped calling their clients by name, as opposed to treating
this man with respect and calling him “Bob”; is when we should all realize that
medicine should stay away from humanity.
It is like a monkey working on your car.To make my point. A pill has many
Report thiseffects on the body. One of this is what is desired, and is called the therapeutic
effect. While the other 11 side effects are called adverse effects. So a pill does
12 things, and we are willing to take a change and accept the adverse affects all
for the one that is beneficial. We do not know what we are doing. Maybe the
the people who use illicit drugs are more honest, than the doctors.

Shrammett, THANK YOU (!) for your defense of “Us”.
The “Us” consists of people with a host of chronic, often lethal conditions. In my case, I battle Multiple Myeloma (bone marrow cancer). There are millions of us who take these “Schedule IIs” so as we can have work, exercise and have something vaguely approaching a normal life. What I loathe is that some ignorant DEA schumcks with no medical training are literally destroying the lives of countless chronic pain sufferers. The climate of hysteria is approaching that of the idiotic Temperence Movement of the early 20th century! I guess it’s alot more fun & easier for the Feds to fight the phony drug war than it is to tackle the trillions plundered off Wall St. They simply lack the brainpower to do the latter.

Just thought I’d throw this out there. Real heroin and oxy addiction treatment. This treatment is only available from this doctor, in the US.

He was also the doctor that brought rapid detox to the US from Europe. He faced many lawsuits. But his treatments are FDA approved.

“Gateway Drugs” come from Parents medicine Cabinets and docs who get ‘incentives’ and Kick backs.
Report thisStealing a Valium was as simple as liftin ga cigarette or a beer or a few Shots out of one of their liquor bottles. Not only convenient- but Free.
Of course it seems some ‘soccor moms’ are continuing to do the same thing with their kids ADHD meds- the New “Mothers Lil’ Helpers”.
So I laugh when ever I hear Pot is a ‘gateway Drug’- because in reality the tendency to use drugs begins long before the exposure to the illicit drug world- you have to go looking for Street drugs. There are no ‘pushers’ only Dealers. No one dealing drugs is going to take the risk of luring kids into buying their drugs and getting busted.
This is the Deluded fantasy of Parents who don’t want to take responsiblity for being their inital ‘suppliers’ along with claiming their ‘sweet child’ was seduced by druggies or ‘bad influence’ peers.
And when it comes to seeking Drug to solve a problem it is far more an trait of Parent age people. ‘Gee my leg tingles- get a med’, “I can’t keep it up- Get an RX”, ‘I can’t quit smoking-get a pill and a patch’, “I sometimes feel down or stressed- get a Happy pill or atleast one to numb the emotion”.
The ‘Drug Culture’ Begins with the pushers on TV, leads to the ‘connection’ at Docs office and then to the supplier at the Pharmacy.

I have to agree with Tony. I’m surprised more people are not addicted to pain relievers and/or sedatives based on today’s societal challenges.
That said, escaping reality through drug use generally leads down the road to unimaginable hell. And hell is an amusement park compared to withdrawing from oxycontin.
Over seven years ago I was prescribed Oxycontin for back and knee problems. One thing is unequivocal: Oxycontin is the most effective, long acting pain reliever, in pill form, I’ve ever taken. Its efficacy is in the top 90 percentile. One of its most appealing side effects is there are no blatant side effects. I could function, work, drive; all while getting relief from acute, often excruciating pain. It works like a trumpet mute, cushioning the acuity.
However, addiction to the drug is inevitable. It takes more and more of it to work, like all opiates. Finally, I had to go through detox to get off it. (Living with pain is a merry-go-round compared to withdrawal from oxycontin).
There is now a miracle drug called Suboxone available for any opiate addicted soul. It is a million times better than methadone. Most hospitals and detox clinics use it today. It’s expensive as hell but given the choice, I’ll take the road to a better, cleaner, saner life OFF pain meds.

BTW, Tony, I think your post is really insightful.
Yeah, the use of self-administered drugs reflects the obvious need for mood alteration, as well as a bit of excitement/adventure in our lives. Why else would we take such risks and spend so much money to acquire them? Meanwhile, booze is officially sanctioned - heck, it’s like a guy’s a total dork if he doesn’t care to swill beer while watching Sunday football! I don’t need to enumerate the many dangers of the officially sanctioned drugs (booze and tobacco).
What gets me is that there are plenty of neuropharmacologists or whatever who would jump at the chance to do the research we need, if funding were available and restrictions lifted. Think about the benefits of a formulation that would prevent the tolerance effect with opiates? Totally doable - from what I understand, very promising leads already exist for this.
And not just for reduction of harm from existing drugs, but for new, better, safer ones? Can you imagine the benefits of something that prevents the desirable effects of alcohol, without the toxicity and tendency toward “bad” behaviors? Totally doable! In fact, it may already exist in the form of GHB, a ‘90’s era club drug. It was banned after numerous cases of date rape and overdoses. Sounded bad, but really just a matter of regulation. Alcohol can kill you too, which would happen too often if it were a tasteless liquid like GHB. With careful packaging, not so much.
For that matter, with the stuff they do these days, they could probably produce drugs with a self-contained blocking effect, triggered under appropriate circumstances.
Same thing with stimulants - some people simply need them to be happy and productive. ADHD is a myth - adderal is practically identical to meth! Sure, kids get better at schoolwork - they’re on speed! They hand out dexies to military pilots before long missions.
All these antidepressants - they are supposed to adjust your brain chemistry, but they work slowly and poorly, if at all. Why prescribe them, when a line of coke would do a much better job in five minutes flat? All we need is to reformulate our favorite drugs so that they’re safer physiologically. And, I was going to say, “less habit forming” - but if they’re safe, who cares if it becomes a habit?

I was under the impression that there is a generic equivalent. A friend of mine had them. In fact, he had a history of drug abuse before his accident. Yes, he would crush them and inject them. He told me, the problem is that the generics have a gelatin filler which is not water soluble. The gelatin clogs the works. However, there is a “process” to filter out the gelatin. He’s now on Methadone for his pain management.
In fact, Methadone is a very effective pain management alternative. But as of Jan 1 2008, the 40mg soluble diskets are only available at clinics and hospitals (no prescriptions). Why? Methadone is 100% synthetic and no opium is used in its manufacture. Methadone is a fraction of the cost of most oxys. The only down side to Methadone is the interaction with benzos (Valium, Xanax, etc.). Methadone has an extended release effect. There is no euphoric effect.
Again, why? Beats me. Ask the DEA.
abusers of prescription opiates such as OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin eventually begin abusing heroin because
it is typically cheaper and easier to obtain, their doctors cut their dosage due to strict DEA regulationsFIFY
“Gateway drug” is a fallacious argument on many levels. An addict is an addict whether its oxys, heroin, coke, meth, alcohol, whatever. Drug of choice (DOC) is irrelevant.

The opiates are some of the best therapeutic drugs out there, though a poor choice for recreational use, at least if used habitually.
I don’t take oxy anymore because there is no generic form, which makes it too expensive. I take equivalent quantities of fentanyl and morphine. I’m a legit pain patient. Tolerance can be a problem, but I believe most pain users eventually find a maintenance level that gives them satisfactory coverage. Some need more than others; I need what some would consider an enormous amount, but fortunately I can get it, and my dosages have been level for years now.
These drugs gave me back a good quality of life after years of true suffering. With the amount I take - which is huge, probably enough to kill several people - you’d expect I’d look and act like a junky - and yet you could never tell. I don’t even notice it much, except that (a) it eliminates most of my pain, and (b) I get sleepy at times. I realize that it’s effect can be pleasant for new users, but it’s a mild drug, plain and simple. It definitely does not give me any kind of high any more.
Yes, there’s tolerance, addiction and overdoses to be concerned with. All of these could be dealt with through research (many promising remedies for tolerance exist), sane public policy directed toward harm reduction, and education. I can’t get into this at length at the moment, but I feel that existent public policies are incredibly foolish and cruel.
The harassment of doctors has got to stop. I hate the fact that I can’t always speak freely to my docs about how I use these drugs, for fear I’ll be deemed to be exhibiting “drug-seeking behavior”, and risk losing my supply. I fear a takeover of the system by the radical right that could result in a further crackdown.

They did that years ago—people just scrape it off. I used to take the crap, (by Rx, by a very rich dr, but the only pain dr who would take Medicaid!)had to kick it with a friend…no hospital detox for you, after youvew hjelped buy the dr a Porsche and a 20 yr old girlfriend.!! lol
As long as Purdue Pharma is giving Congress plenty of money, nothing will happen. They had a hearing and a preacher in Ky said that people were dying everyday—Congress sniffled and let it go.There is no advantage to OxyContin over other codeine basaed painkillers—except cost,($$ for the pharmaceutical industrial complex) and many are on Medicaid, so enjoy your tax money going to kill people and Congressional imcumbency protection.
Prohibition didnt work with alcohol and it doesnt work with drugs…if people want treatment they should get it free.

Who is worse the FDA, or the drug manufacturer?
Since the FDA has no credibility, and since they are totally corupt, how is that any different than the drug manufacturer?
Why don’t we just stop kidding ourselves, and go ahead and legalize Heroin?
Oxy should have never been approved and they know it.

Sounds like “The National Drug Threat Assessment” does
not know what they are talking about.
When people feel that there is no hope, no control of their environment; one
will try to escape it if only for a few hours. Before long, it is now how they cope
with any unexpected problems in their life. While the poor may seek illicit
drugs, and the insured seek pharmaceuticals; it is still the same problem. As
far as gate way drugs, it is not true that one drug leads to another. People will
get what ever they get get. It is about suppressing the pain, and not seeking
bigger trills.
It is high time we start talking the truth about our poor copping skills. All
