Barack Obama

Obama, shown here speaking at an unrelated event, told an interviewer recently that “ ... I continue to believe that nobody’s above the law.”

Seven former heads of the CIA formally requested that President Obama halt an ongoing inquiry into suspect abuse (aka torture) by the agency, arguing that important CIA work would be hampered by such an investigation. Obama didn’t bite, claiming that “nobody’s above the law.” Except George W. Bush, it seems. —JCL

The BBC:

President Obama has rejected a request by seven former heads of the CIA to end the inquiry into allegations of abuse of suspects held by the agency.

“Nobody’s above the law,” Mr Obama said in an interview with the American CBS television programme Face The Nation.

The US Attorney General Eric Holder last month named a prosecutor to examine whether the CIA had gone beyond approved interrogation methods.

The former heads wrote to Mr Obama saying the probe would hamper CIA work.

It’s good to see Obama standing tall on this fake public relations inequiry while he continues his torture and rendition policies.  and its inspiring that truthdig praises him for it.  Otherwise one might think that the US power system is mired in violence, corruption and moral depravity.

These pleas sort of make you wonder how deep is this
rabbit hole and how long has it been developing.

Obama has already “buckled under” on the this topic. This so-called investigation
will only target low-level government employees who committed acts of torture
that had not been pre-approved. It’s a whitewash, not one bit more legal or
ethical than the Bush administration’s “investigation” of the systemic torture at
Abu Ghraib.
