Religious and nationalist leaders in Serbia have opposed a bill banning discrimination against homosexuals.

Anti-gay groups threatening violence have shot down a gay pride parade in Serbia. Posters warning “We’re expecting you” had been plastered around Belgrade, rattling politicians and police, who told organizers they could not guarantee safety for the march.  —J.C.

The BBC:

A Gay Pride march in Serbia has been called off after police told organisers they could not guarantee its safety.

One of the organisers said Serbia’s prime minister had urged them to switch Sunday’s rally from central Belgrade, but the proposal was “unacceptable”.

President Boris Tadic vowed on Friday to protect the participants.

Anti-gay groups had threatened violence if the march were allowed to go ahead. “We’re expecting you” posters had been stuck around the Serbian capital.

Dooley:

To answer your insolent question, there are people in the world who are concerned with peace, human rights and global affairs.  They may very much care about a gay-rights parade in Serbia and appreciate access to news such as this.  You, on the other hand, do not seem to care at all which begs the question: why even comment?

Who cares? This is what should be on our minds? A parade in Serbia? In Serbia??

I guess when everything else is so perfect we can think deep thoughts about parades in far away lands that we will never see. Maybe we’ll get lucky and get some conservative wingnut to start ranting and raving about family values and how the parade is going to destroy the fabric of all that is good and right. See that way we can get a really heated discussion about———- a parade in Serbia? Serbia?

If it weren’t for gay rights the US wouldn’t be ahead
of the rest of the world in anything but the machines
of war.
