Obama’s Back-to-School Speech Ruffles Feathers on the Right

Obama and Weaver
whitehouse.gov

Laying the groundwork: President Obama talks about his planned back-to-school speech during an August interview with Damon Weaver from Kathryn E. Cunningham / Canal Point Elementary in Florida.

So, President Obama wants to give our nation’s schoolchildren a personalized message Tuesday as they start a new year. One might imagine that the president plans to emphasize the importance of education, but some of Obama’s detractors are reading much more into the motives behind his speech.  —KA

AP via Google News:

Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, a potential presidential contender in 2012, said Obama’s speech is “uninvited” and that the president’s move raises questions of content and motive.

Many school districts have decided not to show Obama’s speech, to be delivered at 12 noon EDT Tuesday, partly in response to concerns from parents.

[...] Gibbs said former Republican presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush delivered similar speeches to students. He said Obama’s speech will not be partisan but rather a chance for children to get “a little encouragement as they start the school year.”

The White House spokesman said he couldn’t speak to the motivations of some school districts.

“Look, there are some school districts that won’t let you read ‘Huckleberry Finn,’ ” Gibbs said.

All this brings back to mind, Dubya, sitting there in the classroom, half asleep, half awake, with the book upside down, as Americans were being burnt alive in the worst terrorist attack on the U.S. soil, the commander-in-chief instead chose to read My Pet Goat for the next eight minutes.

The past administration had their chance to promote educational excellence and failed miserably, let the new commander-in-chief have his chance to inspire the future generation of this nation.

Parents living in schools systems refusing to air the speech should keep their children home in protest AND allow them to view it in comfort.

The students would sing PRAISES to the parents…. it’s a win/win.  A follow-up letter of disatisfaction would be in order, one to the local school system and one to the overseeing state agency.

MN Gov. Pawlenty is a religious right wing wacko, but seriously…. from what I’ve read his wife is even WORSE.  It sounded as if she’s another Michelle Bachmann type.  Scary, isn’t it?

shemp333,

I was brought up to rely on Jesus, who would help me to stand, but I have to be the one who stands and keep standing for whatever it is I want to accomplish, and if I don’t give up, I will overcome with God’s help through Jesus, but if I give up, not even God can help me and that has worked in my life and will work for anyone as long as what you are doing is constructive without destructive purpose.

These RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST demagog Christians are using religion as a destructive tool—there is nothing at all in the Bible for their basis since Jesus.  War on nations for greed is not of God, destroying and conserving all the wealth of a nation to a few wealthy conservative capitalists to destroy that nation’s economy and make a whole common population destitute is not of God, and the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMISTS promoting racial and political hatred is not of God, either.

It’s not a surprise to me that there are some people “on the right wing” whose attitudes are firmly grounded in ignorance and hate… it’s that THERE’S SO DAMNED MANY OF THEM that astounds me! Didn’t any of these people attend school past Grade 8?

Most Americans, compared with the plight of citizens in many other countries, live in safety, comfort and luxury with more than plenty to eat (obviously). It brings tears to my eyes that so many not only take all that for granted and as their “right” but DEMAND more and more and more. There’s no reason or balance in their attacks on anyone who doesn’t 100% agree with their narrow, mean-spirited, jaded and paranoid view of the world.

It would be so refreshing to encounter even one of them who would pause and reflect on ALL SIDES OF AN ISSUE to seek the answer that adds up to WIN-WIN instead of ALWAYS in terms of WIN-LOSE.

There can’t be that many rotten apples in the barrel, but these rotten apples need to be removed.

Making the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMISTS be seen as the traitors they actually are would be a wonderful idea, as long as bigoted principals and bigoted superintendents can’t do anything to hurt the children.

Neither racial bigots nor conservative political bigots should be allowed to be leaders in the school system.  There couldn’t be that many and all of them need to be sought out and removed from service.  This is the 21st Century, our nation needs to quit living in their bigoted past.

I agree with what you said.  I am just not sure that firing them all would be the best way to deal with this.  Let’s think on… How about getting around them?  Let’s make them appear to the kids how stupid the traitors really are.  Youtube would be a great venue.  Children are much more tuned into the internet than most adults.  It is a generational gap they are filling in without our control or will.  I bet the kids denied will see it anyway,  and wonder what the hell the fuss was all about.  Undermining their stupid parental walls.

At noon on Tuesday, September 8th the President will be welcoming America’s students back to school – after all, sometimes they need a little extra motivation after a glorious summer. The President has spoken often about the responsibility parents have for their children and their education, but in this message he’ll urge students to take personal responsibility for their own education, to set goals, and to not only stay in school but make the most of it.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/My-Education-My-Future/

All parents taking their children out of school to undermine the President of the United States’ speech are fools and are making an egregious mistake.  And, all principals and superintendents trying to undermine the President of the United States, must be FIRED, because it isn’t proper educating to leave an impression with the children that the President of the United States can be undermined by unworthy principals and superintendents in the education field.

Shemp—-The point I was trying to make is that CNN
and other big business controlled media are trying
to mold the thoughts of people.  For example, they
reported that parents didn’t want their children
listening to our President but they didn’t tell you
HOW MANY parents are involved.  It’s probably less
than 1%.  Yet when CNN reports just the fact that
parents are keeping their children home it influenes
the thoughts of other people.  People are basically
sheep. They follow what other people are doing.
The other point I was making is that the big business
controlled media does not report on important issues
such as public schools teaching children how
interest on debt cards is calculated or how what is
broadcast on their media influences the buying habits of children and people.  People are being
deceived without even realizing it is happening.

Wow those right wing conservative folks are stupid. I dont like to call anyone stupid but I have to. They seem to be grasping at anything to the point of looking stupid and desperate to find anything to wet the bed about.
If the conservatives had their way, there would be no separation of church and state, but they’d want to keep the president out of our schools. If a republican was elected president would this even be an issue? Its ridiculous.
Anybody who has half a brain can see how sad they are, and need to distance themselves from the bubble of stupidity the conservatives have around them.

Very true.  This hateful and ignorant part of the Republicans should help to remind us constantly why America cannot afford to let them back in any sort of leading role.  I just hope that Obama and his backers start getting a little tougher.  They do come across as weak, or not confident in their convictions.
I think Bill Maher said it best on Real Time a couple months ago.

For people who don’t analyze the true nature of political events, this is not just
a case of nutty people getting hysterical like some St. Vitus Dance syndrome.

The radical right is using demonization and negative stigmatization in any way
they can, town halls, and now this school speech thing.  It isn’t about issues,
and it isn’t about whether the President of the United States can address
concerns about student success in public schools.

The people organizing this have no interest in issues.  What they want to do is
to pull down Obama’s favorable poll ratings to the point where the elections in
2010 may be affected and Republicans can gain seats in Congress.  Beyond
that, they hope to retake the White House in 2012.

Why be so caustically negative?  Really, they have no constructive policy
proposals to offer.  They just want power.

Unfortunately, a lot of people simply respond to the negative environment and
will blame Obama for it.  Many people are not prepared to see through the
manipulations.  A lot of people think the argument is really about a considered
position on whether the President speaking constitutes a politically charged
event.  It is not.  It is about people ruthless enough and unscrupulous enough
to appeal to baser instincts.  It is contemptible, but it may succeed in souring
the political climate even worse than it already has been.

The elephant versus the mouse is a siginificant image in Johannes’ remarks above.  It expresses clearly the feeling too many people have of weakness, of powerlessness, of being overwhelmed by events beyond control.  This is a huge part of the problem Obama (and everybody else) faces: How to bring about change for the better in a world being altered day by day by the force of technology and corporate power. If the mouse cannot find ways to respond creatively, it will naturally become frightened and resentful.  As a last resort, it will become hateful and destructive. And the elephant will go blithely on, not even being aware of what has happened—or ignoring the damage it has done. Shall we change this pattern?  If so, how?  Suggestions welcome.  God knows we need them!

Mark writes: “First Obama wants his volunteer corps., and now this. Any rational person would step back and wonder about all this youth indoctrination.”

Being a rational person, I’ve actually explored the Americorps website in detail. A lot of their programs for youth involve good old-fashioned physical labor, remember that? Things like back-country maintenance to prevent wildfires that could destroy communities, and trail maintenance so we can better enjoy our national parks.

I for one think it would a lot better use of some young people’s time to do such work, instead of staying indoors playing video games all day, or working over a hot fryer at Burger King.

As for “now this” - I can only hope that your side’s slander of Obama’s Back to School speech for kids will finally compel him to give all of you a well-deserved middle finger instead of pretending that you’re still sane.

Wonder why?  You don’t think CNN is trying to mold

wonder if CNN would cover a story where parents
refuse to let their children watch TV programs and
movies that are corrupting the minds of their children?  I wonder if CNN would cover a story where
parents refuse to allow their children to play

school districts decide to teach their students how
the interest on credit cards is calculated?  How
about school districts teaching their children how
the media manipulates their buying habits?

Oops! So here we are, talking about another baseless, fact-free argument ginned-up by the 20% of the population that are the real remaining core of the Rethuglican party.

Yes, and Ronald Reagan addressed students directly—with all the cameras handy—in 1987 or 88, and the topic he discussed?

Tax reform, and cutting taxes to the top tier income grabbers.

So now we have a [black] socialist [black] fascist [black] terrorist [black] mind-controlling [black] grandma-hating killer [black] Muslim brainwashed in the [black] Christian pews by [black] Jeremiah Wright—and wasn’t even born [black] in America!

Well, okay: Half-rican, since he was half born in Kenya!

And he’s taking the totally unique, never happened before (except for Reagan, Bush I and Bush the Lesser) approach of going in to attack our young, since he can’t get enough of throwing the old into health care wood chippers!

Git yer guns! Secede! Water the Tree and dip yer tea bags!!!!!!!

WOW, “uninvited”, the President of the United States does not have to be “invited” to speak to the school system of the United States by out of power REPUBLICANS.  Hogwash.

“Many school districts have decided not to show Obama’s speech, to be delivered at 12 noon EDT Tuesday, partly in response to concerns from parents.”  Hogwash again.

All public school districts that do not show the President of the United States speech should be looking for new principals and superintendents, because the President of the United States can speak to the schools any time he pleases and hopefully the President will give more speeches than one to the schools.

I do hope those who do not show the President of the United States’ speech at school do get reported, as REPUBLICANS Reagan and Bush both spoke to the schools, perhaps the REPUBLICANS are in a dream world thinking REPUBLICANS somehow have a monopoly on speaking to the school system, NOT.  There is a Democratic President in power and there is a Democratic President going to speak to the school system.  REPUBLICANS get used to a DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT being in charge of the country.  REPUBLICANS are OUT of power and hopefully for a long, long time.
