Gideon Levy: Bad Journalism Is a Gift to Occupation

“Thousands of homes in the territories have been demolished for nothing,” writes Levy, who asks, “Is that not shocking enough?”

Haaretz’s Gideon Levy writes that the “cheap and harmful journalism” of the Swedish organ harvesting story has made life more difficult for opponents of the occupation: “The Israeli occupation is ugly enough without the contribution of Nordic fairy tales. ... [A]ny exaggeration in describing the occupation’s cruelty will ultimately damage the struggle against it.”

Haaretz:

The Israeli occupation is ugly enough without the contribution of Nordic fairy tales. Its wrongs are abominable even without exaggerations and inventions. We, a small group of Israeli journalists trying to document the occupation, always knew that we must not publish an unfounded report. One mistake and the whole journalistic enterprise would fall into the hands of official propaganda, which automatically denies all suspicions and is just waiting for a mistake. Look what the IDF Spokesman’s Office did to the organization Breaking the Silence, just because it was set up as a nonprofit limited company and not a nonprofit organization; as if that were relevant to the quality of the testimony it presents.

Over the years, the IDF has killed thousands of innocent civilians, among them women and children. The Shin Bet security service has tortured hundreds of people under interrogation, sometimes to death. Israel prevents food and medicine from reaching Gaza. Sick people are extorted by the Shin Bet to become collaborators in return for medical treatment. Thousands of homes in the territories have been demolished for nothing. Dozens of people have been killed by special units when they could have been arrested instead. Thousands of detainees have sat in jail for months or years without trial. Is that not enough to draw a reliable portrait of the occupation? Is that not shocking enough?

To quote Shakespeare’s “me thinks dost[Israel] has protest too much”, seems to be appropriate here. Israeli immediately threw out the anti-Semite as being the rational for the Swedish article. Same old trick, morphing Israel, Jews, Zionists zealots into one category. This defies the rule of logic and the Zionist zealot propagandists show their disdain, hubris and arrogance for anything not Zionist. They are separate, I can disagree with the Israeli government and not be anti Semitic. Using the Zionist zealots logic and applying it to Israel when they criticize the U.S, government it must mean that Israel is anti-American, despite the $billions in aid we American taxpayer suckers give to them yearly.$500 per year for each Israeli, which enables Israel to enjoy socialized medicine which pays for massages, with chocolate if desired. If the USA is so gullible and pathetic Israel should take advantage of it, it’s just being Jewish and can’t be faulted for that.

The New “Blood Libel”?

Israeli Organ Harvesting

By ALISON WEIR

“Last week Sweden’s largest daily newspaper published an article containing shocking material: testimony and circumstantial evidence indicating that Israelis may have been harvesting internal organs from Palestinian prisoners without consent for many years.

Worse yet, some of the information reported in the article suggests that in some instances Palestinians may have been captured with this macabre purpose in mind.

In the article, “Our sons plundered for their organs,” veteran journalist Donald Bostrom writes that Palestinians “harbor strong suspicions against Israel for seizing young men and having them serve as the country’s organ reserve – a very serious accusation, with enough question marks to motivate the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to start an investigation about possible war crimes.”1/

An army of Israeli officials and apologists immediately went into high gear, calling both Bostrom and the newspaper’s editors “anti-Semitic.” The Israeli foreign minister was reportedly “aghast” and termed it “a demonizing piece of blood libel.” An Israeli official called it “hate porn.”

Commentary magazine wrote that the story was “merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of European funded and promoted anti-Israel hate.” Numerous people likened the article to the medieval “blood libel,” (widely refuted stories that Jews killed people to use their blood in religious rituals). Even some pro-Palestinian writers joined in the criticism, expressing skepticism.

The fact is, however, that substantiated evidence of public and private organ trafficking and theft, and allegations of worse, have been widely reported for many years. Given such context, the Swedish charges become far more plausible than might otherwise be the case and suggest that an investigation could well turn up significant information.

Below are a few examples of previous reports on this topic.

Israel’s first heart transplant

Israel’s very first, historic heart transplant used a heart removed from a living patient without consent or consulting his family.

In December 1968 a man named Avraham Sadegat (the New York Times seems to give his name as A Savgat) (2) died two days after a stroke, even though his family had been told he was “doing well.”

After initially refusing to release his body, the Israeli hospital where he was being treated finally turned the man’s body over to his family. They discovered that his upper body was wrapped in bandages; an odd situation, they felt, for someone who had suffered a stroke.

When they removed the bandages, they discovered that the chest cavity was stuffed with bandages, and the heart was missing.

During this time, the headline-making Israeli heart transplant had occurred. After their initial shock, the man’s wife and brother began to put the two events together and demanded answers.

The hospital at first denied that Sadegat’s heart had been used in the headline-making transplant, but the family raised a media storm and eventually applied to three cabinet ministers. Finally, weeks later and after the family had signed a document promising not to sue, the hospital admitted that Sadagat’s heart had been used.

The hospital explained that it had abided by Israeli law, which allowed organs to be harvested without the family’s consent.  (3) (The United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime includes the extraction of organs in its definition of human exploitation.)

Indications that the removal of Sadagat’s heart was the actual cause of death went unaddressed.”

Organ harvesting might not be an officially sanctioned practice by the Zionist entity, however, this does not rule out that individual Zionists, worshipers of mammon, are taking advantage of the Israeli butchering of Palestinian children to make money.

In the final analysis, even if one case of such barbaric act is documented to have taken place, it’s still enough criminal indictment against Israel as political entity that should be reported.

I do disagree with Gideon assessment that even an exaggerated reporting of a partial truth is going to hamper the work of those who are fighting the criminality of the Israeli occupation. The death of children at the hands of Israeli soldiers is the ultimate crime; harvesting their organs after the fact of slaughtering them is not as criminal and fascist as slaughtering them in the first place.

Gideon’s article in this case is an exercise in futile semantics!

Israelis should ask themselves why the story was so readily believed. As
Folktruther points out, the story was readily believed because the Israeli have in
fact done this sort of thing, and worse.

The thrust of your piece is something I applaud, but I am dazed and amazed by the Israeli sense of entitlement; anyhoo, I’m heartened by the fact people such as yourself can still find a “voice”. Rock on! Jew boy.

Folktruth, excellent observations about organ harvesting. Just recently some American Rabbi’s, Jewish of course,in New Jersey were arrested with others in an organ harvesting scheme. Reports about Palestinian organ being harvested, Rabbi’s in New Jersey arrested in an organ harvesting scheme. What an amazing coincidence and the Israeli’s wantonly kill Palestinians considering them of being an inferior people, except for their organs of course.

Astonishing.  In the full article, Levy admits the claim that Israel HAS harvasted Palestinian organs, but considers it cheap journalism to say so.  Despite some Rabbis in New Jersey indicted for trafficing in organs, associated with Israel.  And he generously states that the Swedish reporter’s identification with the Palestinians does not NECESSARILY prove that he is anti-Semitic.

Israel is descening inot barbarism faster than the US is.  Inevitably, since Israeli oppression is so far advanced that Israel puts a outright racist in as foreign minister. As Kolko, the noted historian, and former zionist said in a coounterpunch piece, the emigration of Jews from Israel combined with the difference in birth rate, will shortly leave Jews a minority in Israel, resembling the South Africa situation that Israel previously allied with.  And going the same way in the near future.
