President Barack Obama pauses with Glen Gardner, commander in chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, after speaking at the VFW National Convention in Phoenix.

Elements of the U.S. defense industry have yet to join the rest of the country in the post-Cold-War reality, according to President Obama, who also gave legislators who capitalize on the defense budget for self-serving reasons a verbal spanking as he addressed an audience of veterans in Phoenix on Monday.  —KA

AP via Google News:

He accused members of Congress of using the Pentagon budget to protect jobs back home, including on wasteful projects he said were diverting money needed for U.S. military forces battling everything from nuclear weapons to “18th century style piracy and 21st century cyber threats.”

Obama thanked America’s veterans and praised U.S. fighting forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he also spoke harshly of a “defense establishment (that) has yet to fully adapt to the post-Cold War world.”

His speech, in the convention center in downtown Phoenix, was respectfully received by the veterans, who frequently interrupted him with polite applause.

translation: “The defense industry didnt send me enough campaign contributions, and unless they have a secret meeting with me where they hand over some serious cash, they are gonna get cut off at the knees.”

I’m no fan of words without action and Obama’s achievements to date have been a worry.  That said, he is not a King and he has to work in a very complex organisation to achieve his aims.  That he has essentially said here that he recognises the “political engineering” of the military contractors (putting bits of manufacturing in as many districts as possible) and the folly of stupid complex weapon system development is a good start.

I don’t expect Obama to get there in his one or two terms but steps towards sanity cannot be a bad thing!

Are you not ashamed that you try to mislead me by kind of suggesting that our President is “acting” when he is only producing more hot air?

Oh, He´s acting, alright.

The same bull from the same source. If you want to reduce the military budget stop fighting unnecessary wars. Remember, after all the brouhaha about canceling an expensive and unneeded fighter plane program, saving billions, the military budget for the next year is still larger than it was for this year.

At least he acknowledges it.  But we still need to see money diverted away from the military altogether and invested in *ahem* single-payer health care and education

When will you, Truthdig, stop promoting Obama’s hot air production? Have you not learned yet that scolding is cheap and produces de nada? Are you not ashamed that you try to mislead me by kind of suggesting that our President is “acting” when he is only producing more hot air?

Obama says congress is wasting money that could be used by the military. I think that the military is wasting money that could be used by the people. As an ex cav scout, I firmly believe in the necessity of having an effective military; however, I think the military is not doing what it is supposed to do. Our armed forces are not, and should not be, used as police. That is what they are used as in the ME. Think of the money we could save if we brought ALL of our troops home. It is easy to see why some people say we are an empire, when we have troops damn near everywhere in the world. We use the flimsiest of excuses to keep our troops in a country after the fighting is over. We are not the world’s babysitter, yet most of our “leaders” act as if that is exactly what we are. We can’t afford public health care, but we can certainly afford billions to kill people. If a country needs our help to fight off an aggressor, we should be first in line to help. After the war is over, we should be first in line to leave. As far as congressmen trying to save peoples’ jobs back home, I wish mine had fought harder for my state, maybe then we wouldn’t have so many people out of work here. Until we stop posting troops worldwide, we will continue to have budget problems. Bringing our troops ,all of them, home would save us an enormous amount of money.
