Here’s Hoping Obama Really Is a Socialist

In this topsy-turvy world it seems one’s proximity to full-blown communism is directly proportional to one’s success in capitalism. Take Red China’s explosive economic growth, or the unexpected success of semi-socialist Germany and France, which just bid auf Wiedersehen and adieu to the recession.

Those two countries took some heat, you may recall, for not spending as much on stimulus as the U.S. had hoped. Turns out they didn’t need to, and if consumer spending in those nations is any indication, safety nets are useful in an economic catastrophe. —PS

BBC:

The French and German economies both grew by 0.3% between April and June, bringing to an end year-long recessions in Europe’s largest economies.

[...] The data came as a surprise, with few analysts expecting Germany and France to start to recover so soon.

A long time ago, way back in high school, a teacher once told me that there are two kinds of freedom—‘freedom of’ and ‘freedom from.’  Freedom of is what we have here—freedom of press, freedom of speech, freedom to be greedy jerks pursuing capitalistic desires even if it ruins the country as a whole.  Other countries, more socialistic ones, focus on freedom from.  With more programs to ensure everyone has health care and other basics, they are free from some of the worries Americans go through as we try to accumulate wealth, but fail miserably (at least for most of us).  I wish more people would realize this and talk about it honestly, without just clinging to ‘capitalism’ versus ‘socialism’ as if the words say everything and the concepts don’t need to be fully examined along a continuum.  Ok, so maybe pure communism or socialism or whatever would be bad.  But why must we assume that pure capitalism is great?  Why can’t we strike a better balance between the two.  Isn’t that what our country sought to do—achieve balance—with all our checks and balances built into the system?  We have lived in a greedy, go all out for capitalism world for so long.  Fewer regulations and a growing gap between rich and poor.  Now, I have a graduate degree, so I understand trying to work hard and get more than the neighbors, to win the game, so to speak.  But at the same time, I’ve been out of work from the recession for over a year.  I’m ready and willing to work hard, but can’t do so if there are no jobs out there for me.  You also have to look at how large the numbers are of people hurting—hurting for jobs, health care, to get out of debt they took on when it seemed they’d be able to repay it, before the game changed on them midstream.  Maybe I’m rambling a little, but I hope someone out there gets my point.  I won’t say we need socialism, but what’s wrong with saying we need more ‘socialistic’ type programs?

RootJensen,

What you are not taking into consideration is that these people who are coming in and are being subsidized will have children and in turn will be the ones that are subsidizing you.  We must seek to not only live in the moment.  In the moment they may seem like they have more than you, but after the moment passes and you are old, and they are subsidizing you, should they whine because in the moment they don’t want to subsidize the old people.

If the Mexicans come in to the United States and are subsidized, at a later time their children will be subsidizing the same people that have subsidized them. My only concerns about the Mexicans is that they become citizens and learn our language.

I am more concerned about CORPORATE WELFARE, as CORPORATE WELFARE benefits nobody other than the corporations. And, if you look at the money the government actually doles out to corporations it makes the amount of money doled out to benefit the public good chicken feed, but never the less there is endless conservative whining if government money is getting away where it can’t be cordoned off by conservatives into Big capitalist’s coffers.

MarthaA,
Where I live it’s such a contentious subject of colour and creed that you actually find the black community in the uk were really commenting on this, it may have been different in America.
No i’m not an ill minded CEO, I can be a bit crass or vague sometimes though.
I found in the UK that there was this attitude that he was going to be the messiah, and being half black (not that it is a problem for me) was the greatest thing for the black community, the morning bus run was alive with notions of a new age, mass change etc, I have always said not to expect it because it’s all for show.
Sotomayor had such a tough time ( i dont know the full details there) so how did Obama step in so easy?
Someones gonna give me a history lesson now haha…

It played out really well cos he got in under the illusion that change would come, I have been saying for ten years that after Bush would come a black president and I was right, why? because that’s what the world needs to see to get America back in favour to put it broadly.
As a patient of the NHS, yes there has been some moments that I’ve despaired and moments that the care has been fantastic. I feel the fear is that America will be flooded by more migrants if there is free health care. The uk has seen massive rises with free health care and free handouts to new families, Without sounding rascist you can see the majority of migrants (over last 5-10yrs) all have very young children. Family tax credits can almost give you your wage, council housing prioritises migrants. I can see arguements against such socialism, my taxes pay for my sub-saharan migrant neighbour to sit on their backsides with their 2yr old girl while the rest of us work, it’s tough to find the happy line when your watching someone feed and clothe themselves better than you from your own money, when they contribute so little. It’s tough to not sound rascist.

I generally don’t comment on the more feebleminded pieces, like this one, but Americans have been indoctrianated so heavily about marxism and socialism I feel I ought.

Socialism is a POWER relation, the people holding the power rahter than the owners of the means of production, including truth production.  Socialism idoesn’t exist in welfare states or in class societies.  Like China.

But China morphed into a new form of power system to urbanize their country, a kind of party capitalism with the state owning a third of the economy and controlling the banks and fiancial corps.  Western economies can’t compete with this form of party capitalism, which is growing at an unprecidented rate for an unprecidented time to rapidly become the major power of the world.

But for God’s sake, don’t tell anyone.  The function of the US mainstream truth is to obscure and blur the rapid historical decline of the Western power, and the decay of the Western homicidal imperialism that sustained it.

And the Chinese are happy for the West to retain these power delusions, becuase the replacement of the West as the leading powers is fraught with war tension.  The US in particular identifies with homicidal racism, the sosurce of the fear and hate of China,  and the US powerful and people are both delusional.  this piece on ‘Socialism’ being a good example of the political drivel indoctrinating us.

Half the world’s people live in east and south Asia.  As they increase in power, they will lead the world.  The US is wasting its money on current military budgets, preventing it from growing in the future.  Bush is almost a national hero in China for getting the US into its current mil;itary quagmires,  as Gorbachev is in the US for destroying the Soviet Union.

And Obama is continuing Bushite policies under an inspiring, articulate and duplicious rhetoric.

It’s all down here from here, and socialism has had nothing to do with it.  Precisely he reason it is historically downhill.  As Engels and Luxembourg stated, the choice is socialism or barbarism, and the US power structure has made its choice.

RootJensen,

“Obama being half black was never going to change anything, honestly it’s probably fooled more people right into the governments hands.”

Talk about racism.  What does half black have to do with anything?

Are you talking about the government hands of Medicare that all those stupid REPUBLICAN old people are so afraid to lose, or what?  You must be more specific.

Why don’t you just come out and say you are a REPUBLICAN CEO for a health insurance company, that’s trying to STOP Medicare even for the old, and sure don’t want the Democrats giving Medicare to everyone, because it will cut into your private profit.  Instead of the truth, you choose to hide behind the poor ignorant old “wanna be” REPUBLICANS that you have fooled into thinking REPUBLICANS represent them, that REPUBLICANS have given them their Medicare, and that it’s those awful liberal Democrats that want to take their Medicare away, which is lower than a snakes belly, because the REPUBLICANS fought hard against the old people getting Medicare, just as they are fighting against Health Care now,  as no CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN EXTREMIST ever chooses to give anything to the public sector, only to feather the nests of the super wealthy, at the expense of the public sector; which is all REPUBLICANS deem to be good government. I truly hope and pray Obama manages to not get sucked into your REPUBLICAN web of deceit.

Socialism today, not for me, it seems a bit too blinkered and ill-happy. But then the other side is far too selfish and grumpy.
A nice balance of the two sides, because the happy happy joy joy world of socialism doesn’t cater for evolution of humanity ie genetic degenerative diseases that could be eradicated if we didn’t pamper it so much.
And the other side, well we all know great examples of self and greed.
People need to stop wishing for the messiah/great leader/2nd coming, which you must admit it does seem that way right now.
Obama being half black was never going to change anything, honestly it’s probably fooled more people right into the governments hands.
American is a young country, hotheaded and still kinda dumb, can mankind get through America’s teens?

The simple truth is that the “free market” cannot exist without rules to keep it free.  The communists have an advantage over us because they do not have the problem with rules that we do.

Sorry to break the news that Obama’s not a socialist. He’s just another corporate stooge.
I’ve also gotta break it to you that as long as Americans cling to their “Capitalism equals Freedom” delusion we will continue to lag behind every other developed nation in our standard of living.
