Georgia Republican Worries Dems Will Declare Martial Law

Rep. Paul Broun, who once compared Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler, now thinks the president is part of a radical “socialistic elite” that may try to declare martial law. Broun’s comments came during what an area newspaper described as a “relatively peaceful” town hall.

That’s right, while members of Congress around the country have to deal with screaming crazies at their town hall meetings, in one frightening district of Georgia the member of Congress is one of the screaming crazies.

The Raw Story has a comprehensive look at Broun’s comments, including a classic non-apology.  —PS

Athens Banner-Herald:

At another point, Broun, who last year made national news by comparing Obama to Hitler, called Cuba’s former dictator Fidel Castro and leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Obama’s “good buddy.”

He also spoke of a “socialistic elite” - Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid - who might use a pandemic disease or natural disaster as an excuse to declare martial law.

“They’re trying to develop an environment where they can take over,” he said. “We’ve seen that historically.”

Rodger, you may be right about how these idiots think of martial law = gay marriage. I hadn’t thought about it that way before.

Hey, where’s his flag pin?

The only thing dumber that this tool are the people who elected him. He probably thinks that martial law means he will have to marry a guy.
A fetching tinfoil hat would go perfectly with the tie and the position.

Broun is a total nut case, I live in his district. TWO BLOCK FROM HIS NORTH GEORGIA CAMPAIGN HQ, Tiger, Ga., THERE IS A HOUSE WITH A FULL SIZE NAZI FLAG FLYING ON THE OUTSIDE. I’m glad he was never my Doctor. He just makes stuff up. his district is comprised of some of the most ignorant, gullible people in American and he is living proof.

Chaotic, the test was culturally-biased; it required ruling out practice over theory. For example, the question about which branch of government declares war. It is Congress but we all know it’s been the President who can get around that provision (LBJ, Nixon, both Bushes, Clinton by enforcing No Fly Zone, Obama). Therefore that question has two answers for anyone paying attention to current events over the last 40 years.

I passed, btw (82%). Thought I’d do better—I’ll have to add to my summer reading list.

The Dems will probably not declare martial law.  This will likely be done by the Gops, SUPPORTED by the Dems. Obama has already come down in suppport of spying on the American people, bringing combat units from Iraq to be trained against the American population, increassed the number of police, and is maintaining torture, secrecy and lawless imprisonment under the guise of abolishing it.  He is merely setting the stage for the Gops, not imposing the police state itself.

But its a natural mistake.

Don’tcha just love these “Representatives” ?  It’s pretty obvious that Mr. Broun is just showing how his constituents “think” - why should anyone expect more?  Commenters should doubly thank their lucky stars they don’t live in Mr. Broun’s district.
All the virtues of a republic depend on how constituents make their wishes known - and all the vices as well.  I’m not sure our forefathers ever anticipated how ignorant, petty, or self-centered “We The People” could become.  Many (myself included) have said that the Electoral College dilutes democracy - but maybe it’s a useful filter that blocks mob rule.
I saw the movie “Blindness” recently which depicted what might happen if a plague made most people blind.  What if that plague suddenly made most Americans insane ala “I Am Legend” ?
  (Gee….. maybe it already happened.)

First of all—the tie.  The design is a play on the colors / design of the Georgia flag.

Most disturbing—could this rube even DEFINE ‘socialist’...?  Somehow I doubt it.  The word ‘socialist’ and variations thereof have been discovered to be incindiary by the foulmouthpieces of talk radio, and subsequently picked up by their desperate lapdogs among the Repugs and Blue Dogs.  If you can’t convince the public of the wisdom of your position (I know, I know…), then just do what you can to scare the hell out of them.  We saw a woman at one of the ‘town hall meetings’ the other day express her fear of Obama—‘He’s a socialist…I don’t want to see our country turned into Russia’ (or words to that effect).

The rhetoric from the ‘loyal opposition’ is becoming increasingly DISloyal and downright childish.  The wild thrashings of a dying beast?  One can hope.

Shoulda hanged all confederate soldiers as traitors, but we let ‘em go home and foment stupidity.  This is what comes of allowing slaveholders, racists, and dumbkopfs to breed—arrant stupidity disguised as loony patriotism.

Wait a minute-it was Preston Bush, a Repug and grand pappy to little King George who was the real Hitler $$$ supporter, until this government found out. How that whole family was ever allowed into politics is criminal, they never should have been allowed a position to exploit America and boy did they. Not Obama, so lets get the facts straight, you crazed Repukelicans out there. And the martial law thing was already done by baby Bush during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina using Dicko Cheney’s favorite paid mercenary killers-Blackwater. Where was the news and why didn’t they report it at that time? Nothing new here about the martial law thing, it has been planned since the 1950’s and before check it out. But the cocaine cowboy and barf vader cheney were the ones who built the 600+ FEMA camps that fruitcake repugnant repug Michelle Bachman keeps spouting that Obama has built-really? She has even tried to discredit the Americore program the Obama talked about and yet her own son signed up to be a part time teacher for this organization and she didn’t even know it -oh the horror!

The tie - a Goodwill store reject, may have come from a donation from one of the circus clowns who may be out of work due to many circuses closing down because of laws banning the use of animal acts.

Here a Nazi, there a Nazi, everywhere a Nazi…

I don’t think this man is smart enough to recognize a Nazi if one kicked him in the butt. Just another stupid politician trying to scare other stupid people. The average American knows next to nothing about Nazi’s except they were “bad”.

The lack of knowledge about American and World History is appalling. Do you know that the average college senior cannot pass a simple 33 question test of basic Civics and American History and that American Politicians score even worse than college seniors on the test.
Take the test and see how you do.

http://www.americancivicliteracy.org/index.html

How would this man know what a Nazi is unless he saw some totally fictionalized hollywood movie on the subject.  It is amazing that while these buffoons vilify democrats as Nazi’s, their leaders on “C” street worship people named Hitler, Pol Pot and Mao TseTung as God’s appointed leaders.  The hipocrasy is astounding.

Re: hippie4ever

Your comment: “Where’d he get that tie—a party shop? Geez what a tool.”

Hmmm….and yes but, well….  I have to disagree… I saw the same at the DollarTree, not to be confused with Dollar Stores.  You see, in Dollar Stores, everything they sell is in dollar increments, whereas…. in DollarTrees…. everything really is “a dollar”.  DollarTrees… are the way to go.  Trust me, I know.

Of course…. there’s a side of me that says… well, I just might have or “may have” saw the thing at the Boston Store…. I can’t be certain of course.  Is that last years model?  Because, then…. well, I might be able to be more astute regarding the matter.

In this vein… hippie4ever, I really have to disagree regarding your premise of the party store.  And it grieves me so.

As regards this “marshall law” deal… lol, I’m good…. are you good….. I’m good.

What broun fails to admit is that obama is one of his party’s operatives, just like those republicans who run for office as democrats and upon discovery of their shtick, they are then labeled ‘blue dogs’.

Sorry to say I think most posters are missing the point. What is truly awful about all this vitriolic, ultra-partisan, hubbub is that it completely distracts from the real issues which is exactly what those in power want, whether they call themselves repubs or dems. The goal of both sides is to obfuscate and confuse the American public.

Will Obama declare Martial law? He just might, but not for the reasons the repubs cite. Obama’s administration is a fluid continuation of Bush’s and he is cracking down on the rights of prisoners and citizens. If we weren’t so ignorant and complacent, a police state might be necessary, but as it is, the people are easily distracted by these red herrings and phony vitriolic arguments.

By accusing him of being a socialist, the exact opposite of what he really is, they are tricking people into this dishonest, repub vs dem argument that is only an illusion. And it’s working.

These guys aren’t nutjobs or morons - they know EXACTLY what they are doing.

Also I’ve noticed that many anti-establishment type folk are drawn in by the Repub’s use of conspiracy theories in an attempt to extinguish their usefulness.

One more nail in the coffin of the GOP. One day the rabid right will see how the Republicans use them. By that time all the centrist Republicans will be too alienated to bother saving them. Watch carefully folks we may be watching an extinction in process.

People who support this bill without reading it are the real nutjobs.  Well OK, John Conyers said that it would take two lawyers two days to get a grasp of what it contains.  Who can afford that in today’s economic climate other than Sachs Goldberg?  So, why would anyone but criminals want CONgress to pass incomprehensible laws? Screw bipartisanship.  That’s just both parties conspiring to gang bang us.
