Russian Tanks in South Ossetia

Russian tanks on the move during last year’s war against Georgia.

Russia has announced it will spend half a billion dollars upgrading its military presence—reinforcing bases, strengthening borders—in Abkhazia, the breakaway region of Georgia that, along with South Ossetia, was a focal point in last year’s war between the two countries.

The BBC:

Russia is to spend almost $500m (£300m) next year reinforcing its military bases in Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia, the prime minister says.

Vladimir Putin’s announcement came as he arrived in Abkhazia for talks.

Moscow officially recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia following the war a year ago between Russia and Georgia.

“.....is not Russia still grabbing around the world to obtain resourses they do not possess…”

FYI-Russia doesn’t need any resources. It already has every resource.
The USA is the one that must search out and take resources.

Russia is just defending what it already has and what the USA covets.

Rollzone, the US is the imperialist superpower with a far worse human-rights record, they’re just better at covering things up! Russia just wants to hold on to its sphere of influence and to prevent the Westerners from drinking the whole Caspian oil milkshake, which is what the whole Georgian-Russia fiasco was mostly about. Don’t forget about the missile-defense shield we are in the process of putting up in Poland! This is a direct threat to Russia! I think they are pretty reserved in their response to the West.

hello. is hedgemonism alive and well again in Russia? are these not the beginning steps of an infant about to expand into another superpower? are they not rebuilding stronger, with the same disdain towards human rights, in ways they will not repeat what they have learned? is not Russia still grabbing around the world to obtain resourses they do not posses: in ways they do not need to compensate? i want to accept the Russians unconditionally, but with actions like these; i cannot.

Good for them. Maybe next time, certain enroaching Nato-wannabes will think twice before following the poor advice from their cronies in the US.

Often politics resembles an 800 meter dash: the guy in the inner lane has a great advantage.
