What Lies Ahead for Justice Sotomayor?

Sotomayor sworn in

Sonia Sotomayor, left, is sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts to become the Supreme Court’s first Hispanic justice and only the third woman in the court’s 220-year history. Behind Sotomayor is her brother, Juan Luis Sotomayor, and her mother, Celina, is at center

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has made history after successfully navigating the grueling confirmation process by finally being sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts at a ceremony at the court’s headquarters Saturday. However, the partisan politics that played out during the grilling phase are just a taste of things to come, according to The Christian Science Monitor’s Brad Knickerbocker.

The Christian Science Monitor:

The first test could come in the midterm elections next year.

Writing in NationalJournal.com, Steven Shepherd points out that “of the GOP senators standing for re-election next year, all 12 voted against Sotomayor.” That includes Robert Bennett of Utah and John McCain of Arizona who are facing primary challenges.

In states with relatively high percentages of Hispanic voters — Arizona (16 percent), Florida (14 percent), Nevada (15 percent), and Texas (20 percent) — only one Republican senator voted for Sotomayor. That’s Mel Martínez of Florida, who’s just announced his early retirement.

In a New York Times blog post, Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, says the sizable GOP vote against Sotomayor (plus the harangues of unofficial party leaders like Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich) are “more than enough to remind [Hispanics] of why they don’t vote Republican very often these days.”

Ardee——The Bible is a history book along with
being a book about the future.
............................

A common misconception among the folks who read with faith instead of reality.

The bible is a book written piecemeal over many centuries, and its purpose was to advance the church not report historical fact. The many subsets within it are filled with the (then) current politics of the church and contradict themselves frequently.

Just read the two accounts of the crucifixion
contained in Mark and Luke for confirmation of the inaccuracies. Two supposed eyewitnesses to that event yet their accounts are radically different. It didnt get any better from there either.

I will not engage in a religious debate, politics is bad enough, as religion requires a stomach for those who believe faith trumps thinking.

Ardee——The Bible is a history book along with
being a book about the future.  Doesn’t look
good for the self-centered atheists running businesses in the good old USA.

Instead of the bible, read a history text sometimes, with emphasis on Thurgood Marshall and Earl Warren especially…

What lies ahead for another Supreme Court Justice?
More ignorant decisions by someone not elected by
the people.  Maybe she could do something novel like
take the word “God” out of the dictionary.  It has
to be offensive to some people.

Hopefully what awaits her is what should await each and every Supreme Court Justice: a career dedicated to upholding the law of the land, nothing more and nothing less. That is her job. http://www.dimequecrees.com

Sounds like you are projecting what your reaction to the job would be. Pray do enlighten us as to what you understand about progressivism. If you are up for it explain your concept of the function of the Supreme Court while you are at it.

Now that Sotomayor has been confirmed, she’ll go to all the secret briefings, learn all the secret handshakes, meet all the powerbrokers who will finally open her eyes to who really runs the world, and, perhaps reluctantly, join the “Them” club. And so she will join Barack Obama in the pantheon of traitors to Progressivism.

She will do a fine job despite the continued complaints of the senile Republicans who have nothing to offer but fear, racism and sour grapes.

Everything seems a Democrat vs. Republican issue…Whatever happened to the issue of what is good for this nation.
