President Obama was most likely NOT born in the United States. Lets check:

Hawaiian legal statute states:

“[§338-17.8]  Certificates for children born out of State.

(a)  Upon application of an adult or the legal parents of a minor child, the director of health shall issue a birth certificate for such adult or minor, provided that proof has been submitted to the director of health that the legal parents of such individual while living without the Territory or State of Hawaii had declared the Territory or State of Hawaii as their legal residence for at least one year immediately preceding the birth or adoption of such child.
(b)  Proof of legal residency shall be submitted to the director of health in any manner that the director shall deem appropriate.  The director of health may also adopt any rules pursuant to chapter 91 that he or she may deem necessary or proper to prevent fraudulent applications for birth certificates and to REQUIRE any FURTHER INFORMATION or PROOF OF EVENTS necessary FOR COMPLETION of a birth certificate.

according to Factcheck.org Obama’s parents published an anouncement of the birth of the now president Obama on the Honolulu Advertiser on August 13, 1961.

Who in his right mind is going to go around publishing the birth of his/her child…unless it was a legal requirement!

The Honolulu health director probably made this requirement to the Obama’s before can could issued the birth certificate, to make sure that it was not a fraudalent application, because they did not have the birth records, they did not have the birth records because he was not born there.

President Obama is a citizen of the United States, but citizenship alone does not qualify him to be president, HE MUST HAVE BEEN BORN IN TH UNITED STATES, or as in the case of John McCain, in one of the U.S. Territories.

We need to see what hospital he was born in, we need to see the signature of the nurse or doctor that witness his birth, not the signature of the person/s who issued the birth certificate, as you can see in the above quoted statute…anybody could get a BC…where is the doctor who delivered Obama? or at least his signature, where is the nurse or her/his signature, there must be information about the hospital, where is it?....all the hospital records have already been burned in Kenya..this is madness…sickening..we’re being deceived..

Isn’t funny—when Arnold Schwarzenegger was at the peak of his popularity, the “birthers” were all in favor of changing the Constitution to omit the Born in the USA clause!

Now they are not only saying he wasn’t BORN in the USA, but that he’s not a US citizen!  I’ve yet to see even FABRICATED evidence of that idiocy.

Sorry Jeremy Keith Hammond and Ed Harges, but it’s you who are wrong.

Section 1 of Article Two of the United States Constitution sets forth the eligibility requirements for serving as President of the United States:

“ No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. ”

Despite its various references to citizenship, the Constitution as ratified failed to provide any definition of citizenship itself, let alone “natural born” citizenship. Some have argued that this was a deliberate attempt by the drafters to avoid addressing the contentious issue of slavery.  This changed with the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868. Its Citizenship Clause provided that

“ All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

The requirements for citizenship, and its very definition in American statute law, have changed since the Constitution was ratified in 1788. Congress first recognized the citizenship of children born to U.S. parents overseas on March 26, 1790, stating that “the children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens.  To date, the Naturalization Act of 1790 has been the only U.S. law explicitly conferring statutory “natural born” citizenship. In 1795, Congress removed the words “natural born” from the law; the Naturalization Act of 1795 says only that foreign-born children of American parents “shall be considered as citizens of the United States ”

So does that mean that my hypothetical holds — namely, that if you’re born in a civilian British hospital, to American parents vacationing in London, and they return to the US a week later, and you spend the rest of your childhood in the US, you can’t ever run for President?

I’m in agreement with you about it being stupid.

But I’m bored and got curious so I did a little wikipedia search for anyone who’s curious and willing to trust wikipedia - which, personally, I find quite accurate.

The constitution specifies that a candidate must be a “natural born citizen” which for quite a while went undefined.

The 14th amendment added:

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

‘Naturalization’ is the acquisition of citizenship or nationality by somebody who was not a citizen or national of that country when he or she was born. In other words, to be ‘naturalized’ therefore means to become as if “natural born.”

Children of military parents, such as myself (and unfortunately Mr. McCain), are most often naturalized citizens.

You’re right, Ed, correcting Daniel that the constitution does specify that one must be born in the US - not just a US citizen to be the President. But - John McCain does qualify because he was born on what is considered to be American soil - the naval base in Panama. Just like I was born on US soil in Rota, Spain - and I’m going to guess your parents were military too, since we have a very large military presence in Germany too, making you eligible if you had been born at one of the military hospitals.

This would seem to exclude lots of US citizens born outside the US. I think that’s outrageous. It would even apparently exclude John McCain, who is a US citizen but was born in Panama; however, notice that the Birthers don’t have any problem with McCain’s eligibility to be President. This is one of the many obvious indications that the hullabaloo is really about race, not constitutional requirements.

(It would also exclude me, since I was born in Germany to American parents. I was automatically a US citizen by birth, but I can never be President. On the other hand, I’m not eligible to serve as US President anyway, since I’m not passionately devoted to Israel.)

This reminds me of one of the annoying things about the state of Illinois is that they do not recognized actual birth certificates as legitmate documents.  In my late 30’s I moved to Illinois and had to contact the capital of birth place and request a Certificate of Live Birth before they would issue me a drivers license.  I could somewhat accept that a valid drivers license from the state of Virginia wasn’t accepted, but I wasn’t able to stifle my laughter to the poor lady at the DMV when she told me that birth certificates were too easy to forge. Hmmm,...a computer print out verses a document with a pressed state seal and my actual foot prints.  As the President was from that state, I could sort of understand the original confusion: birth certificate or certificate of live birth.  But all of the “i"s have been dotted and the “t"s crosses and everything is on display, all the rest of this is wishful nut-jobbery.

I know from my own experience that a child, born of a US citizen, no matter where his or her birth took place, IS an US citizen.  If you don’t believe it, go to your nearest US Consulate or Embassy, they will tell you.  In the meantime, you can also check on the Web, the official page of the US State Department.  So, Obama, born in Kenya or Hawaii, he is still a US citizenthrough his mother.

However, I am sure the “birthers” wouldn’t check anything: it would tilt their apple cart.

I’m astonished that America allowed a mixed parentage child to be allowed to have a real, live birth certificate at that time.  Didn’t we whites realize he could grow up and cause damage to our superiority, make his predecessor look childish, and cause southern senators to pop blood vessels in frustration and impotence? All those civils rights thing—first you allow ‘em to vote, and then all hell breaks loose.
